What's your preferred combat style, reality vs TES?
As in what do you prefer in real life against what do your characters use?
Magic using characters excepted for obvious reasons..
I was reviewing my Skyrim characters today, and it suddenly dawned on me that they were all sword/spear users, and that no character of mine has ever used Warhammers, Waraxes, battleaxes or Maces as their main weapon type, and only 2 use daggers or shortswords. Only 1 uses Katanas, and then only rarely.
This largely ties in with theoretical real life, except for a fondness for sledgehammers. Which none of my characters share, as Warhammers feel... unwieldy ingame. At least to me...
Anyone else?

Re: What's your preferred combat style, reality vs TES?
im a little bit confused, as i dont run around in real life with medieval weapons
but i agree about the Two Handed weapons in-game. they always felt too slow to be useful. i tried using them for a while, but it was just ..too... slow ...
i prefer Swords, i suppose. but light Axes are good too.

Like I said, theoretical real life - the way that you would do if you only had what they had.

I know what you mean, I used to do karate and I was always more of a staff guy. Realistically, I would probably use a spear or polearm of some kind. In ES, every of my characters learns marksmanship to some degree and has some skill with swords even if they're mages, weapon skill is handy.

if i was, theoretically, in a medieval setting, i would probably end up with a cheap axe and a bow.

sword and bow in games and in reality. (A machete is close enough to a sword for this, I would guess.)

On a more serious note:
Usually a 'tank' fighter (i.e. heavy armour, shield, melee weapon). Sometimes with some magic support as well.
In theoretical real-life: As a Viking, of course with the typical Viking-era armour, i.e. chainmail byrnie, iron helmet, leather-clad wooden shield reinforced with iron, one-handed axe, seax or sword, and a spear (the shorter, one-handed throwing/thrusting type).

In TES, I often stealthily hunt with a bow, but really enjoy charging in with a shield and war axe.
In real life, hand to hand. It's what I'm most proficient with.

In the game, sharp objects.
In real life,Beast ball bat!!!baseball bat, pocketknives, and a gun for terror factor(I swear, brandishing a gun in public is like casting a panic spell in TES.)

In TES - sniping enemies with a bound bow or sneaking up on them with two sharp daggers.
Real life? Trying to run away, but tripping over my own feet? Like 95% of real people? Come on, don't try to convince us you're some fearless BAMFs, it sounds like a really bad nerd joke...
Unless we're talking about what I'd like to be able to do in a hypothetical "combat" situation. In which case I'm going with "making them weep in terror and shame with my razor-sharp wit". You know, the whole Oncoming Storm shtick.

Nobody was saying we'd be badasses, we were like you said implying hypothetical situations. And to be honest, if I was in a battle, I'd be one of the first guys to die. I wouldn't run, that's not something I've ever done or will do, but I would likely die.

Re: What's your preferred combat style, reality vs TES?
No, but I mean - is that seriously what you guys would like to be able to do? Like, if someone tried to beat you up and take your wallet - that's what you'd choose? Because when I was thinking about it (okay, for 5 seconds, but still) the option "I'd like to stand over their artfully sliced corpse with my badass Rambo knife" didn't even get close to the list...
Those ideas work if the question is "what would you like to see if someone was making a blockbuster movie with you as the hero", not in a "theoretical real life". The key word being "real".

Hell, if I got mugged, all they'd get is an empty wallet, all my money is in my belt. Still, depending on the situation and how close the person is, I wouldn't be gentle about getting my property taken from me.

Re: What's your preferred combat style, reality vs TES?
Well, at least I am talking about getting mugged, I can't really see myself getting into any other "combat situations" in real life. And I'm standing by my choice - if we're supposed to imagine having some kind of awesome combat skill, I'd certainly take being able to talk the [&@%!] down and make them rethink their life choices over being able to shoot them in the face with perfect accuracy. A 5-foot-nothing girl scaring away a mugger by talking at him is much cooler than the same girl spending weeks or months explaining to the authorities that it was self defense, not to mention being traumatized by the fact that she shot someone.
Also, I don't own anything I'd be willing to shoot someone for. Well, okay, if we replace a mugger with a murderous psycho then I guess I do - my life - but I'd still rather not kill or maim people.

Re: What's your preferred combat style, reality vs TES?
My characters have spanned pretty much all weapon types, though I do have a preference for swords. In a speculative real-life scenario, I'd prefer the distance in using a bow, and nothing bigger than a dagger for close-quarters (all to hopefully minimize the gore). If it's a completely realistic scenario...I'd be resourceful, or just run.

Same here, but I'd still go after a weapon of some sorts first. Going in with only my fists always seems like a dumb move in my opinion.Derp53 wrote:And to be honest, if I was in a battle, I'd be one of the first guys to die. Re: What's your preferred combat style, reality vs TES?
In games I enjoy charging the enemy with brute force, while wearing nothing but clothes, and dodging their blows whilst parrying. I also hate ranged weapons in all games (that makes me dislike shooters because of aiming). In the real world, I have made swords out of steel. I personally find them funner to use on cardboard than any bow is. However I can stand guns in the real world.
So I guess my combat style is the same in both worlds. But I still prefer melee to ranged (I would make a horrible sniper in the Marines).

Re: What's your preferred combat style, reality vs TES?
All my major characters use bows; hitting huge sneak bonuses undetected in the shadows. I like to play with characters who hate confrontation. They'll pick their fights really carefully and only strike when they know they can one-shot.
Real life? On my own? I'd run, lets be honest. Muggers are rarely small (and unarmed, anyway). Though even with access to a gun I'd probably still run; killing somebody is something I would rather avoid if all possible.

Real life: medieval longsword in the vein of Johannes Liechtenauer's principles of single combat in tournament and judicial duels.
TES: archery.

This. Give me something light and hard-hitting. A staff is an all-purpose weapon, really.Derp53 wrote: I was always more of a staff guy.
In TES I tend to drift towards a sword 'n' sorcery approach.
