Oblivion Factions - You're never really "the boss"

Post by King Acunasti »

For all of you mods, if this topic is part of another thread feel free to lock it.

Okay, did anyone ever notice that when you finally get to the highest rank of any main faction, you're never actually "the boss". For example:
Spoiler:
When you become the Listener of the Dark Brotherhood, you're left with ONE member of the Black Hand, and three lower-ranked Murderers. That, compared to nine lower-higher ranked Sanctuary dwellers, plus a fully employed Black Hand. Plus, Lucien Lachance dies!
The Mages Guild is almost exactly the same! I just don't get it...

DB
Spoiler:
An annoying thing with the DB is that there is 'apparently' a santuary within any city but not only do you only have access to the Cheydinal one, there is actually no place that the other santuaries can be within the other cities.
MG
Spoiler:
And the mage's guild is annoying in the sense that you have become the head and people beneath you treat you like crap
FG
Spoiler:
The Fighter's Guild is kind of more acceptable as over the years the guild has been stagnated and with the Black Wood company they were really damaged, so you were left with the remains.

It's true....the Mage's guild one always angers me. All the students claiming they're "too busy" to talk to me.

That's like some entry-level programmer at Microsoft blowing off Bill Gates.

After finishing the Shivering Isles main quest...
Spoiler:
I have my own realm, and for all intents and purposes I'm a Daedric Prince (albeit a mortal one). But aside from a few small perks, it's no different than being a regular citizen. It'd be nice to feel like I'm more than just Sheogorath's housesitter.

To quote Sheogorath himself: "Ask?! ASK!? I don't ask! I tell! This is MY realm, remember? My creation, my place, MY RULES!"

You don't get any power other than the recognition as Madgod in the Isles. That is all, and Sheogorath never intended for you to get more. Being a Daedric Prince, or rather holding a title, does not grant instantaneously grant you power.

Actually, I rather do recall him telling you at one point that you would indeed receive his power.

I KNOW!

The Mages Guild annoys me the most, too!
I try to talk to someone and they say either "I'm sure you have something very important to say, but I'm busy" or "Sorry, I'm busy with my studies."

PLUS, I told my Mage Follower to stay somewhere and can't find him anymore and can't get a new one, rofl.

Anyway, I think someone should make a mod so you get more recognition from the guilds, you know?

I wasn't expecting to suddenly gain the raw power of the Daedric Princes themselves, but to me there's just not enough lordiness in being promoted to Madgod as it stands. Ultimately it's only a minor niggle, because I can still call the Isles my realm and protect it.
Anyway thanks to savegames and RPG mechanics, my puny mortal protagonist is unkillable and develops godlike powers. :Twisted Evil:

What Sheogorath wanted, what he needed, was a competent leader whom the armies of the Shivering Isles would follow in the event that he went— away. He didn't need a brand-new Daedric Prince for the job, just someone who could do something other than run around in circles crying "Dude! We are so boned!"
Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.

Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

Spoiler:
Thieves Guild doesn't ring any bells like this, I seem to recall everyone thinking very highly of yourself whenever you wear the cowl. Without it, of course, you're not the Fox, so that's easily explained.
However, I do agree that in general, being the boss is overrated. Nobody seems to notice, and apart from a few quirky perks, it's the same old, same old.

You do get some of Sheogorath's powers:
1) A Manipulate Weather Greater Power.
2) A Sheogorath's Protection Lesser Power.
3) Golden Saint and Dark Seducer escorts.
4) You can save settlements that are under attack or send some guards.
5) You have access to the Court Healer.
6) You can ask for a Dancer.
7) If you are arrested you don't have to go to jail.
8) You can get Sheogorath's Staff and clothes.

As for the Mages Guild: I was very happy with the rewards, you have your own room in the Arcane University with a Spellmaking and Enchanting altar, you can take an Apprentice with you... not everyone treats you as they should but that doesn't really matter to me.

The FG then. It's nice to receive items instead of septims. And you really are the boss.

DB. There aren't many DB members remaining but the murderers treat you with a lot of respect. It would've been nice though if you would be given access to the other sanctuaries.

TG. Best reward of all guilds IMO. The Gray Cowl which is great for thief characters, your own headquarters, members who show up randomly and really look up to you... not to mention you can still use all the fences and sell them your stolen goods.

Yeah, but He tells you,"You'll have power. My power! You'll be Me. A Me to fight the Him!"

So essentially you are suppose to take His place. Even the Prince of Order doesn't really know What you are afterwards. "Prince? God? Mortal? It is unclear."

S.I. and fable 2 spoilers 'ere

we're limited by the current technology and programming. They are leaning towards allowing characters to influence the world around them in a more meaningful way than killing things and moving items around, but it's still far away i think - next gen at least (2016). I liked the idea of Sheogorath controlling the weather, but once i got there i was very underwhelmed by it, especially when i found out i 'had' to go out and be a do the dirty work myself

Consider fable2, which features the ability to make decisions with much farther reaching implications; but beyond the immediate stuff like people like you/don't like you and towns are rich or poor depending on what you spend there, the deeper changes are scripted events rather than gradual ones (eg Westcliff which grows up whilst you're away doing your stuff).

The strongholds in Morrowind were probably as much 'true influence' you're likely to get over the world as a leader in TES, hopefully they can re-introduce this sort of thing in TES5. My bet is on a mages tower and a pirate ship which you can command on the high seas.

All these things annoy me severely, especially the Shivering Isles bit, but the one thing that agitates me to no end is that aside from the small bit in the Fighter's Guild you dont acctually get any administrative duties or anything like that, such as in the Mage's guild, you dont get to change your position on political issues such as Necromancy or anything at all.
THE MAGE - Prefering to use their extensive knowledge of all things magical, they wield a might more powerful than the sharpest blade.

yeah being Sheogorath turned out a bit like doing community service in the end

it would be nice if every now and then a guild steward would come up to you and ask you to make a decision about something. Like, what punishment a wayward guild member should have, or how should we deal with this issue. Could be quite simple choice a or b. Maybe the old issues could flare up again if you make a bad choice

And maybe you get an income from the guilds for being the boss (ie you check the chest in your office every now and then, like with the vampire agent in deepscorn hollow)

We must not forget that Oblivion is a free-roaming RPG. Mass Effect has many choices that have a huge impact on the game but it's not free-roaming. Oblivion offers a huge open world to explore and because of that, it's much harder to let the player make choices with a big impact. (Mass Effect just being an example of a RPG with many choices)

Actually Mass Effect has free-roaming features, maybe not as much as Oblivion, but I mean that's not saying much because right now, Oblivion is the best free-roamer, out there.

In Mass Effect, you still have the ability to go to any planet and explore the terrain and find interesting settlements and items.

Mass Effect is awesome :D

But still Oblivion is the RPG boss ;)
Kaelan Corvinus wrote:Actually Mass Effect has free-roaming features
True but it's still a completely different game and much less free-roaming. Mass Effect is all about choices and how they affect the story, Oblivion is all about doing whatever you want, exploring the world, fighting, using magic, etc.

I think the one everyone is overlooking is the main quest line.
Spoiler:
I mean, honestly. You save the entire country, spend days upon days helping everyone do live, and in the end, you can still go to jail for punching a peasant. You'd think the guards would give you some lee-way because of all the stuff you did for them - especially in the Imperial City, where Mehrunes decided to pop in and say hi - but they would rather fine their savior, throw him (or her) in prison, or even kill him (or her).
This is madness!

Sheogorath: Madness?! This ... IS ... Well, yes, it's madness, I think. But I'm not quite sure on the details.

To be fair, many of the guards will overlook small crimes and deal with your fines once they like you enough.
