Impossible to make such a list but here goes my attempt.

1 Deus Ex
2 Morrowind
3 Heroes of Might & Magic 3
4 Planescape Torment
5 Fallout 2

Almost made the cut...
6 Sid Meier's Pirates
7 Monkey Island 2
8 Half Life 2
9 Civilization 4
10 World of Warcraft: the Burning Crusade

And actually Fallout, Fallout New Vegas, Half-life, the Secret of Monkey Island and Deus Ex Human Revolution could be on the list too but I settled for the best installments of their series.
I couldn't even decide on 10 so here are a few others that could just as well be on the list. Europa Universalis 2, Betrayal at Krondor, Master of Orion 2, Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magica Obscura, Sam & Max Hit the Road, Portal 2, Beneath a Steel Sky ...
I have regrets already and tomorrow I could present a very different list but here it goes, point of no return.... [Submit]

These are the first games that came to mind.
1. Oblivion
2. Medal of Honour Heroes 2 (PSP)
3. Fallout 3
4. Deux Ex
5. Pokemon Emerald (I havn't played it in years but it was my favourite game when II was younger.)

Halo 3 makes best multiplayer game (XBOX 360) but does not feature in my top 5.
EDIT: With further thought on the subject, I probably should have put San Andreas and Dynasty Warriors somewhere up there.

It seems a lot of other people like Pokemon Emerald too, also I loved Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines and it's probably in my top 10, maybe number 7 or so. Also, New Vegas would be better in my eyes than Fallout 3 if not for the bugs/glitches.

Yeah it was. I played the demo and watched my friend's playthrough but for some reason never got the full game myself. I should probably still get back to it. I didn't even understand all the things back then.

I like that list, Zack. Hitman Absolution was great. ACII was the best Assassin's Creed yet, and there probably won't be a better one.

I know this list was started way before Skyrim (and others) were released, but for what it's worth I would like to sum it up so far.

Apart from Fallout 3 obviously being all the rage at the time (plus obvious similarities with Oblivion), one thing that was easily noticeable when reading through the entries was how clustered some games were. As soon as one person mentioned Garry's Mod it appeared on a few more lists and then disappeared again. This pattern occured several times.

It's rather hard doing this without thinking of the games in series - my favorite three series of all time are the SimCity, Civilization, and TES series (Sims, Total War, and the Sierra city builders get honorable mentions), but having to split them up makes things more difficult. Anyhow, here's my list, then:

1. SimCity 4
2. TES: Morrowind
3. Civ IV
4. TES: Oblivion
5. TES: Skyrim

Honorable Mentions:

6. Crusader Kings II
7. Civ3
8. Pharaoh
9. Sims 3
10. Shogun 2 Total War

To be honest all ten of these are pretty exchangeable, even if I'm looking at it objectively. The only thing that's for certain is that SimCity 4 is on top. Love that game. Played it for an entire decade, and it never got old. Even now I play it now and then, and I still feel like it's aged so well. It was the game that sparked my love for creative writing (in a rather indirect, weird way), for one thing; and I just found its rendition of idyllic, modern life soothing in a way.
