I also vote for the original soundtrack; I like metal and even some death metal, but it doesn't fit Skyrim at all, meanwhile the built in soundtrack fits everything perfectly, with dramatic fight music and ambient music that evokes a sense of wonder and discovery.
Sometimes I overrule the choice of dragon fight music with a track from the soundtrack played in iTunes if the game picks one I don't like as much, as nothing beats fighting dragons to "One They Fear"; I do like the other choices too, but it's by far my favourite, and it helps to make dragon battles in the towns feel more epic, to me at least.

Re: Best music to play when playing skyrim :)
When I'm just messing around, I'll put on whatever's in my gaming youtube playlist at the time, which right now is...let's see...David Bowie, Lou Reed, Gorillaz, Junior Senior, random house music, and uh, the "rush rush, get the yeyo" song from Scarface. If I'm in a more fey or magical mood, Kate Bush. If I'm hanging out in the taverns, The Pogues.
If I want something more atmospheric I'll put on something ambient, probably something from Brian Eno. And wandering the northern shore to Sigur Ros is pretty impressive.

I just listen to the game's music, but if I was going to put anything else on, it would be God's music, aka the Grateful Dead

Re: Best music to play when playing skyrim :)
I think some songs from AC2 would be perfect for when you have just climbed a mountain and standing on top of the peak. As well as some from Brotherhood. In fact, if Skyrim had massive battles instead of the 10 vs 10 battles, i would suggest using Fall of the Villa when Whiterun is attacked/you attack it as well as taking forts for your chosen side.
Would suggest some FF songs but i'm struggling to think of one that would suit Skyrim. Suppose the Great Northern Cave would be ideal for exploring Nordic ruins or Dwemer ones. Oh and prehaps Those Chosen By the Planet when you inflitrate the Thalmor Embassy. Or Shinra's theme.
I can usually come up with a lot of VGM but Skyrim doesn't match most of them. I was going to suggest Enclosure from MGS1/4 but seeing as there are no characters that will make us cry when they die, tis not suited for it.
Some Frontier background music from AC3. And for the final fight, either the new remixed version of the Main theme or the main theme. In fact, why didn't Bethesda have it play when we fought Alduin? As it's the theme of the Dovahkiin. They could have had the Sovngarde music fade out after you do that thing or even have the first few seconds of it playing whilst you do that before it plays.

The original game soundtrack for battles; when just exploring, I actually prefer the music from Oblivion. Something about Oblivion's music seemed more magical as a whole. I prefer it without a doubt.

"Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy, I've come home. I'm so co-ho-ho-hold, let me in your window-ho-ho-ho." (Song: Wuthering Heights, by Kate Bush, 1978 - YouTube link)
Sounds about right for Skyrim, that does. A mad spectral woman in a chiffon gown weirdly gyrating outside my window singing in a childish voice and trying to haunt me into letting her in out of the cold. Go away and freeze, you prancing high-pitched warbling fiend, you!
Remind you of anyone in Skyrim? Yep. Moria the Hagraven. I think this is how she must have appeared and the song and dance she performed at Witch Mist Grove to "seduce" me when I was roaring drunk, as all the clues are there, jealousy, wanting to possess me, etc. And I must have cringed SO much that I proposed marriage just to get away. But the biggest clue was going back for the ring and cringing a SECOND time when I found she'd reverted to her true appearance, and her voice had broken (one high note too many).

If I had the longer version of this song, I would so play it during some epic boss fight.

Saw them live in my town's gym back in 1980 or so; best stage show ever. The bull-skulled creature that appeared on stage brandishing a burning cross during "Solar Music" might quite plausibly be construed as evidence of Daedra worship.Evil-i wrote:Are you familiar with Grobschnitt?metalkiller1234 wrote:Nothing like germans yelling...

I'd have to say MANoWAR. Nothing beats slaying dragons whilst listening to Viking Metal. When I want something calmer (or funnier) I'll play some Tenacious D

I really don't think that Electro House would sound good when playing Skyrim, not to mention that it's distracting, so I'm going to say definitely the original soundtrack. I can't play games seriously with music on anyways.

'Sunslammer' from the Homestuck OST is also a great song to play when in a fight. Especially one that lasts longer than a minute.

The original soundtrack is great, but metal is never wrong to listen to. For the Elder Scrolls games, I usually listen to Blind Guardian, Amon Amarth, Demons & Wizards and Bathory.

100% prefer the game music and sounds, but if I'm in the mood to hear some jams whilst I play it's gonna be my favorite band, Ensiferum. Great heroic folk metal. I agree with Amon Amarth too. My first Nord character was modeled and named after Johan Hegg.

You have to listen to Malukah's version of 'The Dragonborn Comes'!!! She has one of the best voices I've ever heard. Youtube 'skyrim the dragonborn comes' and watch Malukah's video.

Actually I just remembered the soundtrack for another game that fits pretty well; I don't know how many people will have played the Myth series, but one of the few good parts of Myth 3 was its soundtrack, which suits Skyrim fairly well if you absolutely have to listen to something else

Monsters are bred in labyrinths, labyrinths are bred from walls. There is a reason the Giants choose to remain nomadic rather than follow their shield kin the Nords in building permanent settlements. The Tower is the beginning of all walls.
