I don't really understand how Fallout 2 could be 'lorebreaking;' it's as cannon as we can get as far as sources go.
Look at Fallout 1.

Notice how nothing worked?

Look at Fallout 2.

Notice how some things had the potential of working?

Look at Fallout 3.

Notice how alot of things worked?

There are things that work that shouldn't. Fallout does have some /realism/ in it, some moral ambigiuty and good writing.

ThenagainFallout3neverhadgoodwriting.
And there would have been more tech in Fallout 1 if the military base wasn't hit directly by a nuke (and the Necropolis at least used the same water chip technology as the vaults). San Francisco didn't have the same fate
War + Nukes = what the hell do you expect? That the nuke may hit a /farm/?

Plus it'd make more sense. Fallout 1 took considerable time after the Great War. So even if some technology survived The End, it'd be mostly useless by now because no one's been managing it.

This is also why I view that Fallout 3 is lore breaking and silly, because you CAN NOT have every-single-god-damn computer working. Oh also Enclave, BOS and generally being stupid in plot. Also forgetting bout the whole Master's Army moving East...And just general eh. no moral ambiguity. Just be an Ass or be a Jesus.
Just saying ... people sailing and flying over the ocean and being led by super computers seems, while unlikely, not lorebreaking in the Fallout universe
Yep because when I imagine Enclave I imagine being lead by a Super Computer. An organization whose entire leadership was within the Oil Rig. Senate, Congress, Would-be politicians and the Presidency. How do I know this? Well from the fact we no longer see anything political wise in the Enclave in Fallout 3 besides Eden it's just a militarized remnant now. With some scientists, I dunno even know whar those engineers went!

I'd like to think the Enclave would do an Indoril-maneuver. Death before Defeat.

Nope, you just wandered into the Fallout Series discussion thread, one of the most happenin' threads around. It also happens to be my favorite thread on the Citadel.

1. Plenty of computers don't work in Fallout 3.
2. Call it handwaving but it's been pretty well established by now that plenty of technology/machinery was built to be able to survive a lack of maintenance for a very long time. If you want more justification the terminals in 3 and NV are all made by Rob Co, a company fronted by a man who was well aware of the impending apocalypse and was preparing to help the post-apocalyptic west coast survive the aftermath.
3. This is getting really straw-graspy so I apologise, but there are Enclave engies in Broken Steel. Eden would actually be an ideal leader for a group as morally bankrupt as the Enclave as he's capable of thinking with logical perfection and no emotional clouding. Depending on how you look at it the FO2 Enclave political division can be seen as a complete joke anyway.

One of my favorite moments in FO2 is when you call tech support or w/e from the nuclear reactor in gecko and reach the Enclave :D somehow the comms survived the war, too.
Velothi wrote:And just general eh. no moral ambiguity. Just be an Ass or be a Jesus.
I agree with you there. I agree with most of your points on FO3, just pointing out that ocean travel isn't totally out of the question for someone as motivated as The Vault Dweller or The Chosen One in areas that weren't directly hit by nuclear attack (the capital IMO should be near as destroyed as the The Glow)

Plenty of computers don't work in Fallout 3.
Name a few locations, I remember in History Museum only 3 didn't work out of a total of 6 or more.

All of the Super-Market Computers worked.

Computers in military bases that have not been used and vacant for god-damn two centuries still work.

Apparently Personal Computers are a thing now too. It's pretty weeeiiirrrrrrrddddd.

My thing is that little to NO computers should work, especially in Fallout 3. Why? Well please tell me of what Computer of today not only lasts for 2 centuries without human intervention, cleaning or otherwise but have somehow managed to survive as a networking system AFTER an event that'd likely crash the network if one of the bombs hit a very important location.

Only reasoning I'd think for Enclave and BOS Computers being able to work is the re-creation of those networks or them having functioning networks that are independent of the standard computer. I dun think the CIA or FBI have the same computers as us or function on the same network as us. But I dunno apparently Fo3 is for adults like Star Wars prequels is for babies....wait...
Call it handwaving
Or cop-out. Cop-out seems like a more accurate statement.
but it's been pretty well established by now that plenty of technology/machinery was built to be able to survive a lack of maintenance for a very long time.
Hoover Dam can likely last a few months or perhaps a year without human intervention. Our Hoover Dam.

A actively running computer 24/7? If you don't clean it and dust gets in there it'll just sooner or later break down or deactivate due to a lack of power. Because those Turbines don't seem to function well all-on-their-own. Especially if you don't clean them or check them.

Really it just seems like a cop-out that "well technology can survive a long time".

Survive a Nuclear War and 2 centuries without being handled? Yeah. Yeah, tell me that one about Anakin Skywalker being Space-Jesus again? I'd really, /really/ like'd to hear it.

How bout dat'd Palpatine and his plan?
but there are Enclave engies in Broken Steel.
There was also an unrealistic battle station too. I assume we can build the Death Star now? >:V

But the thingy is that I'm very very aggrivated at the whole Enclave in Fallout 3. The Enclave is dead, and Bethseda did a poor job of trying to shoehorn them into it. While Fallout 3 is meant to be like the star Wars episode I (except less sucky) it just succeeds at that. In a bad way.

It's exactly like Star Wars Episode I in that it explains NOTHING relating it to originals and ultimately (as Georgie did) appease to everyone. But then you appease to no-one, especially when you can't do decent writing.

Every time I try to play Fo3 I'm just astounded by how Bethseda claims to be Fallout fans and yet they don't know the first rules of Fallout. Moral ambiguity, Awe-inspiring atmosphere, and characters that we remember.

I still remember Shady Sands, I remember Tandi, the Master, Leu-ten-ant (Jaaaaay I lurv your voice), Harry, Set, Everyone. They all made interesting roles and made the game fun. Fallout 2 continued this and even Fallout Tactics did. Fallout Tactics deserved more of a 'Fallout 3' but then that'd be incorrect because it's before Fallout 2 but after Fallout 1.

Ultimately, the questions are thus.

How did Eden know exactly when the Oil Rig exploded, how did he contact the surviving Enclave Remnants and how did they trust him enough to go to Raven Rock? Ultimately whilst on the Beth forums they did a "He must be apart of the Presidential Line of Succession". However I hold that how do the regular Enclave grunts know this? Most of the leadership is dead by this point and no one really grasps what it is.

Hell, without looking at Wikipedia right now would you know the entire Presidential Line of Succession? Even I don't know that. Especially a Jingoistic mostly militant organization wouldn't know either. Romans didn't know about anything relating to the Senate besides they give orders and are usually beuacratic but they are the means to their survival. (Land, profit, food, etc)

But what we know from Richardson and his very pro-Human attitude is that he'd never put any robotic or un-pure-human anywhere in his US or in his Enclave.

2. How did they exactly get there? Apparently Vertibirds are only in Fallout 2 able to carry Enclave members from Navarro to the Oil Rig. And even then that's steep. So they'd have to do a literal Long-March. Which would kill off even more potential Enclave-survivors.

3. How exactly did the Enclave just decide that Eden was their salvation? While at Bethseda forum I ironically went about to say they had no other choice and the desperation got them that's when I get into discussion. But that doesn' quite fit since Navarro was safe for the moment. And ignoring (since it didn't exist until NV) the NCR attack on Navarro it didn't give the Enclave any reason to go out east. Hell if we know from Fo1 the Unity's army is still there out east as it's own remnant.

Really when one thinks into the Enclave situation you truly grasp how Beth did a George Lucas on us.
just pointing out that ocean travel isn't totally out of the question for someone as motivated as The Vault Dweller or The Chosen One in areas that weren't directly hit by nuclear attack (the capital IMO should be near as destroyed as the The Glow)
Fair enough. Dunno enough about radiation into liquid substances on whether or not it'd create literal super-mutant monsters in the seas like they'd talk about in mythos. Giant Serpents taking ships whole.

And really the whole settlement placement in Fo3 was just weird..Ignoring the megaton copy over from Fallout Tactics (literal copy, settlement built over a nuclear bomb that didn't go over under the name 'Megaton'. That's coincidences and then there's just flat out stealing.) Rivet City, Republic of Dave, that Cannibal place or Tenpenny tower shouldn't be what they are. Mostly because even with the trade system (which we never seen..at least in Fo2 and Fo1 we SAW the Hub and SAW the Caravans and could PARTICIPATE with them.)

I'm still kinda questioning where the Tower gets all its supplies to fund itself, power the electricity to every computer, renovate the rooms and make them look pre-War, fund mercenaries, maintain a water supply that isn't radioactive (to my memory they were either having radioactive water or clean war) and just get all their food. We know from Shady Sands that they were also hunters, agriculture people and generally just starting from the primitive-human standard.

They didn't even know about Crop-rotation. (Which they shouldn't. Who would honestly remember that after Nuclear War? Ones who were in the Vaults.) But yet everyone in fallout 3 knows how to run the local, how to get supplies, how to pay for them and live in any corner of the map. Megaton, Republic of Dave and Rivet City are really unsuitable places to live. Ignoring the radiation they're unstable places geographically or have nothing there to support an agriculture movement.

Which is how small towns like Shady Sands survived. Big cities like The Hub survived off of trade with Shady Sands, allowing it to slightly expand. But there isn't an agriculture town in Fo3. It's just magical. And imagine if you take out places like Tenpenny tower and if that's the place everyone relies on for food or relies majority on food. (I remember in Fo3 there is a 'Hub-like' town but it's just a sparely populated town with little to no agriculture. Also two cartoony people fighting) Then when the ghouls take over, how will they manage the Caravan system. If they hear of a massacre (if you went either route) then the Caravans will steer clear and ultimately both sides begin to die-off. While this is not really present in Fo1 or Fo2 what WAS present was karma, and people knew of your actions. Plus thinking about it likely the trade would eventually kill off the places. You wouldn't see it, but after the game you may hear about it.

Hell in Fo1 you'd literally hear about the towns being destroyed by the Unity. But I dunno. I think the pizza rolls got mah brain..

I'll agree with Velothi on that he's right about a lot things, but lets not forget two things.

A) Beth's whole view to this was basically to re-boot the series, not continue, yes there is a '3' smacked on to the right of the logo, but it's all show. The games were never an FPS and Beth made it so. Ghouls were never mindless zombies, but they made half them like that anyway. They kept to the core of the Lore and just added a lot of new information, I think it's fair to say they didn't totally re-write everything.

B) And second, if we want to get that analytical with Fallout 3, then don't forget the original series were the same one's that thought a population of thousands could grow and not starve for 50-70 years and be perfectly fine. The vaults would have to be miles long to support even a few thousand, but clearly they're not and simply located in one specific square mile or two.

Or that simply after ww2 we could just latch on to a culture that lasted 10 years and expand it 100+ years. Or that some how radiation upon contact can create giant bugs and dragon-like killing machines from chameleons.

I mean I can buy Science! because that's a core element of the game, it's a what if situation, but they never give a reason for why the 50's never died, or how they can support a population of thousands when the largest vault is like 3-4 city blocks.

Secondly, and a more important question I want to ask: has there been any news regarding Fallout 4 at all?

Agreed, New Vegas for me was boring. But I've never played the original, and once I've read that people who never heard about fallout enjoyed more 3 than NV and the fans like more NV than 3. One thing that bothers me is the stupid story about the city surviving the apocalypse because a genius guy built protections around it. Also people aren't vey concerned about their situation, in fallout 3 you can feel the heavy mood, not everyone is happy with the post-apocaliptic life they have. In NV the "dungeons" are too small, you enter a building that from the outside have 3 floors but inside you can only walk in the first floor and half of it is collapsed, it looked like(and it probably happened) that they made the game in a rush, it took me less time to discover all the locations in fallout NV than in 3(I don't think I've even gone to all the places)

So, if you forget about the old games(because now we have a FPS-RPG, while before it was a RPG), and compare the 2 games, Fallout 3 seems a more developed game

I have loved every Fallout game besides the second, "mainly because it felt too idk the word... too open? I mean it felt too ambitious to me, the Original was a bit too linear but I still preferred it. What I like about 3 and NV is that they are a perfect balance, 3 was amazing and had a great story, NV had a mediocre main story but better side quests/features but it kept freezing and giving me corrupt save files which kind of ruined the experience.

Honestly Fallout NV would easily be my favorite game of the last 5 years if it had less glitches.

In the age old 3 vs NV debate the simple answer (to me and anyone else who feels this way:) is they're equal.

Fallout 3 had the better world, more interesting places, areas felt distinct and actually apocalyptic, and at the same time over-whelming, there was a beauty in the destruction you saw. The conflict in the Capital Wasteland was more futuristic and high-fantasy, which is good in it's own right if you like that type of writing. Lastly, the game had better replay value, there just were so many things to see in the game.

New Vegas had better combat by a mile, there was no "uber-gun" in the sense that one gun was vastly superior to the other (Plasma Rifle> Everything in Fallout 3), Certainly some guns were better than others but when you got far into the game there were 'upgrades' to your favorite gun, and really Iron sights made all the difference. Also the conflict in the Mojave was better, it felt real it was important, and battles were very frequent, and well done. There was more freedom and Quests in New Vegas than even Skyrim, that says a lot to me.

Really the only cons in both games was Combat was still lacking compared to most FPS games, I mean for starters cover simply does not exist. You can't get behind something and shoot, it's either hide, run out and shoot, hide again or human battleship.

And the con in F3 was lacking story and missions.

FNV terrible world, deathmoon got it right, there was nothing to see in the game, it was all desert the only interesting places were Black Mountain, Camp McCaren, the Quarry, and the Dam, everything else was just bland, I mean compare New Vegas to D.C., clearly one was better built than the other.

To each their own; that's exactly what I look for (Baldur's Gate II Shadows of Amn was the best at this). (FWIW 2 is my favorite if you couldn't tell from previous posts). I love games that have tens or hundreds of hours of extra gameplay that you would never know about if you didn't look everywhere - it makes for great replay value

In regard to the sustaining a vault population issue ... does it say anywhere that there are thousands of people in the vaults? Either way, they obviously have technology we don't (Garden of Eden Creation Kit, water purification chip) which launches the world into the realm of science fiction. I suppose we'll have to assume that vaults somehow produced food with technology we don't understand (as they certainly weren't farming the surrounding land - the vaults were to be closed until the radiation lowered to acceptable levels)

Addressing the 50s style lasting from the 1950s to when the bombs dropped in 2077 ... Fashion is cyclical. As the fashionista in Leisure Suit Larry 7 said, Fashion is the art of convincing people that old ideas are new :D Just look at the price of 'modern' furniture these days. If we presume that the Fallout world mirrors ours that closely, it's entirely possible that there were art styles that occurred between the 1950s and the 2070s

He means the tech demo for the early version of the game. It's very incomplete and lacks any real structure, but it is a certain sign that the one problem Fallout had (its horrible gameplay) was being improved on.

That said, much to my own shame, I do usually turn the pseudo-real time mode on sporadically in FoT when I get my guys & gals into place. X-COM Apocalypse style. BTW ... new X-COM coming out. I still have my X-COM ufo defense manual, which rivals that of my TI-89
