Re: what do YOU not like about TES
Well, I'm going to bring TESO into this one. But from the gameplay I've seen, its going to be the combat that ruins it for me, it seems like its going to be a retextured WOW. Also monthly fee, that always kills it for me. I'd take a free/one time payment game with low end graphics, slow updates, and (to me) basically same gameplay value, over one that is high end graphics, with many updates and contents, but also a monthly fee.

Re: what do YOU not like about TES
Upon further reading into the issue, TESO sort of has to run on a monthly fee. Do you have any idea how much it costs to run servers for millions of people on WoW? 137k a day. Now granted, Blizzard makes 150 million each month (5 million a day), but they also have to pay for the servers of every single Blizzard game that doesn't have a sub fee (including the newly released D3) and they have to pay employees as well. Granted, we aren't talking about Blizzard and we aren't necessarily talking about 10 million subs. Still, if TESO needs money to keep things afloat, I think 5 dollars a month is pretty decent. That's 60 dollars a year in addition to the 60 you would have to shell out initially. Not too bad.MasterRokon wrote:Well, I'm going to bring TESO into this one. I agree to some degree, however. If TESO is going to cost me money, Zenimax and Bethesda need to realize that I know what is and isn't reasonable.

On a very short scale of history, modern it technology has an even shorter scale. We are not IN the it world / society, we are heading there. It's far from ready. It all actually started, with fierce speed, when Windows 95 was introduced. That's 16,5 years ago. Did you ever think of what cars were 16,5 years after they were introduced to the public? They were lethal.

I dislike many things, primarily the fact that (as the original poster said) many people just don't know enough lore to be interested in the series. And that's something that really can't be changed.
And yeah, the exclusive DLC nonsense kind of annoys me as well.
Most other problems I have tend to be solved very quickly with mods.

Re: what do YOU not like about TES
I mainly dislike the innumerable American accents. You find yourself in a somewhat believable medieval/fantasy world until some npc pipes up in a modern-sounding yank voice. It's always very disappointing. Skyrim did well to get more European voice actors, but I still hear the rare cringe-inducing American accent. Especially Lynda Carter, who does the voice of Gormlaith. Every time I hear her I want to cut my ears off.
Also I'd say Skyrim and Oblivion are too easy and seem to be tailored for people with an IQ of 2.
There was a massive debate about that a while ago, however.

Re: what do YOU not like about TES
I like being able to continue doing things even after completing the story, but at the same time the lack of an ending leaves me feeling a little unaccomplished after beating the main story quests. I never really cared for the rewards that much either.
I also hardly ever get emotionally involved in the many characters that are in these games, which would be fine except for the fact that I end up not caring for characters that are suppose to be important.
I love Jeremy Soule's music, but I wish there was more specific songs for specific events within the games. Entering Sovngarde in TES: V was very refreshing because of that epic song that plays while inside, I wish more events had its own song like that. The story would personally feel more alive that way, to me anyway.
This only applies to Skyrim, but I was so let down with the Bard's College quests...I was hoping there would be more history/lore discussed, or maybe unlocking new bard songs based on legendary figures or something. Eh.

New fans of the series not knowing about the lore annoys me terribly so, especially the following comment my friend made the other day: "Dwemer ruins aren't even that good, I wonder why they even had make something new for Skyrim like that when we already have the Ayleids for ancient ruin dungeons", although that was not the exact comment, I nearly blew up when I heard it.

Re: what do YOU not like about TES
Something that always annoys me with games in general are bugs and glitches. Deliberately triggered glitches are one thing, but when you're playing the game as you should and it happens unintentionally, it really makes my blood boil. It's like the game is saying: "You're feeling fully immersed with the game? (important NPC disappears) Well, not anymore, you piece of s#%t!" "You've made a lot of progress and haven't saved for a while? (game freezes) That will teach you a lesson!"
I play a lot of NES and SNES, so I am used to games glitching out. Even so, I can safely say that the "Elder Scrolls"-series (and the "Fallout"-games published by Bethesda) are the most bug-ridden games I've ever played. Personally, I think it's probably because the developers have a ridiculous deadline to meet, which makes them unable to double-check most things. I'd rather wait a few years longer for a game to iron out all bugs and other flaws, than to have it rushed and then barfed out into the stores.

Luckily, a lot of this can be fixed with mods. I have a mod that removes all markers on the compass.LauZ wrote:Let's play skyrim:
-ALL STATS REGENERATION. ¿Why would you rest, fearing of a creature waking you up?
-Sooooo simple skill-perk-constelation thing. Really? The complexity acheved on previous games, to that?
-Each level up means a choice of 3 stats. Endurance? Inteligence? Willpower, Strength, Speed, Agility, Personality?
-A MARKER THAT TELLS YOU, GO THERE.
And honestly, as long as stat regeneration is slow enough, it's just a simplification that removes quaffing between fights where you have the opportunity to rest. It's still insignificant during a fight and simply means that you won't have to carry around extra potions. The only way you could fail with this normally would be if you didn't carry enough pots.
I have mixed feelings about the new stat-perk system though. Juggling skill advances in the old system to maximize stat increase was seriously poor design. 81 perks to distribute over 250 places also means that no character can be a master of all trades. I still would have preferred a reworked version of the old stats but the problem is that they don't mix well with scaling content.

Edit:
One note about compass markers. The answer to the question at 4:32 (below) made me sleep a little better at night. It seems these devs are actually thinking. I'm not authorized to post links so you'll have to assemble the link yourself. It's an interview with Paul Sage on questing in TES:O.

I don't like the degrading quality of the factions. Morrowind had great factions with somewhat complex faction lines. Oblivion had more linear and shorter storylines. Skyrim has even shorter faction storylines

anyways on topic :
there about 2 things i hate about the elder scrolls :
1- the mad writings of Mr Michael Kirkbride , i despise them , i think CHIM is a load of Nonesense , and that it should never have been put into the games , and i wish Bethesda would stop including them in their TES games
2 - The Love that so many people have for Morrowind , though dont misunderstand , i realize it is their right , but i still think Morrowind was hugely Overrated in almost everyway (well apart from combat , we all agree that that was complete rubbish

Yeah... I think a lot of people's love for Morrowind compared to now is thanks to the nostalgia filter, though I do think that the leveling system of Morrowind was a lot better than Skyrm or Oblivion's.
Things I don't like about them... how about the fact that the Elder Scrolls don't exactly have much to do with the Elder Scrolls?

Re: what do YOU not like about TES
I was never too fond of the magic system.
Mage characters are absolutely my primary of every fantasy game I play. It is very much my to heart class, and mage characters sometimes are not the generic powerful old wizard with a long beard. I fell the type of magic you use really defines your character, from sand magic to lightning magic to summoning magic to making cheese appear out of nothing. I really can't bring myself to make and RP good mages in ES because I am not too fond of the system. Skyrim was a small step forward, but playing a mage in it is very unbalanced, and the only fun spells available are not available for a long while of gameplay.
Mods like midas magic certainly have the shiny animation thing down, but when playing legitimately, a lot of the spells are really not too practical. They tried to implement things like storm call, inspired by midas magic's lightning storm spell, but storm call is so utterly underpowered, a rat could kill faster. And I don't mean to imply to have even more unbalanced extremely powerful mages.
The only way to make more spells more practical so you can get more out of mage gameplay is to make it more tactical. If gamepley is not tactical, then you are shooting fireballs for the first ten levels, getting a new spell, then shooting lightning bolts for the next ten levels, and so on.
Implement element spells that equal the damage of others while keeping their own special effects so that you can roleplay in certain elements without having much of a drawback. Implement more elements than the standard fire, shock, and frost. Have more ambush moments. Create hybrid spells like Illusion/Conjuration sommoning a doppelganger. Let people create pure holy priest characters and pure evil necromancer characters without having them use the same standard fireball to get by in the game. Make animations that don't depict your character in a frozen position while fire comes out of his hands.
Of course there is the argument that you can just RP through it. But when you read a good book, wouldn't it be great to experience it?
I personally enjoy magic systems in Two Worlds II and Dragon age II. Two worlds magic system is very experimental and fun, but the casting animations are a bit lacking. Dragon age II has good tactics and animations, but it lacks in experimentation and creativity. Both of them have auto aim, which I absolutely despise, but somewhat understand in DAII.

I hated the repetitive animations of the magic in DA2. I like the animations of the casting itself. Yes, we need to have more malleable animations, but currently, DAII seems the best to me. I understand auto-aim as well in a game like DAII. I am just speaking about a mage system in non-rts style RPGs. I did find the auto-aim in TWII extremely agitating.R'Zahr wrote:I hated the repetitive animations of the magic in DA2.
