I'm still not seeing the correlation here. Opposition to sexual deviancy =/= racism.

That's all I have to say on the matter.

Actually, it is absolutely comparable. Just as one cannot naturally change their skin-colour, one cannot change how they are wired. They're both very much related to genetics.

I agree somewhat. I don't believe that being gay is a sin, so therefore, I'm not a textbook example of a Catholic. God is about love, not discriminating.

Wow, you know...that was wonderful. Thank you for sharing that. I love Morgan Freeman as an actor, but that little clip has allowed me to wonder if there is more about him I could respect.

And in a way, he is right. The amount of things we once believed - and justified, through science, reasoning, religion, and so forth - to be true and immoral and unacceptable is hard for us to fathom (why? how? did we really do that?), and, one day, all the things we argue now will soon pass.

I have a feeling no one will really read this - it's more fun to argue and debate - but I think it is worth recalling. I had this discussion in the car this evening with my cousin as he drove me home from Easter dinner. We were discussing the value of his college degree, as he is having problems getting into it, and I relayed to him the power of being able to apply knowledge. He said, "See? This is a good discussion. I like this discussion we're having. I want to major in things that can let me talk about this." I told him that I couldn't help him. But it stemmed from a short discussion on history. He said, "I don't believe in history - history is just facts. I don't care about the past. People say, 'We learn from the past,' but I don't believe them."

"And you shouldn't," I responded, "because we don't really learn from the past. If we really learned from the past, we would have abolished the things that allow humanity to put up walls and fences - wars, poverty, segregation, discrimination, race, nationality, creed - twenty years ago."

One day, things like sexuality are going to be like interracial marriages and woman's rights and the earth revolving around the sun. I know that it is not an easy concept to believe, and I'm not saying you have to believe in it personally. But I think that, one day, we will realize how much we hold ourselves back by putting up fences to the quintessential things that make us human - love being one of them.
Huzzah!

You know... I don't see why some parts of the gay rights movement keep trying to argue that homosexuality is genetic, as if it is at all relevant to the question of whether or not gay people should enjoy the same rights that the rest of us enjoy. If somehow it were proven the other way, that homosexuality is without a doubt based on something else, whether it's society, ones upbringing, or just a flat out choice, do you think that would justify discrimination?

I'm not arguing that the basis for sexual preferences are one thing or another. I don't have any experience with that particular question, and I don't think any of us really know the answer to what precise mix of factors will make one person attracted to people of the same sex, any more than there's a perfect explanation for why I prefer men with dark hair as opposed to blonde guys.

I just feel like trying to pin the quest for equality on some science that isn't going to be conclusively proven one way or the other is setting yourself up for disappointment. How about we stick to the idea that all humans deserve to be treated with dignity and respect for their own decisions that don't hurt others?

Wow, great points there, Daendra. I guess the whole genetic issue is used to throw down some people's arguments that it's a choice. But I agree, no matter what, they are free to have the same rights as us.

I agree with you 100%. My only reason for bringing genetics into it was in response to the argument that it's a "choice" and therefore is not a civil rights issue.

In other words, history should be used as a caricature against which we idealize our values. The inverse approach is also used, though less frequently: cherry picking examples from history and contrasting them favorably with perceived contemporary flaws.

I even like these approaches, for the rhetorical effects they allow. One can even use history as a tool to argue for 'progress!' :?

Because love is too valuable to be given away freely.

In the manner of promiscuous hippies like you, MM.

Because if you love everyone, some people think it's their job to inform you that you are what everybody in Seattle calls the South Lake Union Trolley.

I use the word in a sex-positive way and apply it regardless of the genitals involved, but I realize that I need to be very cautious about saying it, because there is SO much baggage attached to the term.

Edit: Speaking of which, I HATED that Caught Red Handed quest. What a horrible thing for the player to do to that poor woman.

Nice, I thought I was the only one around here. Sarcasm aside I do like the word sluthood as well, it has a very nice ring to it.

I'm in favour!

The fact that words like that are even banned shows how weird society can be. The way in which some are used is even more nonsensical when you think about it, as illustrated by the comic below, or rather it would've been but I can't link it since the url contains the word "kitty". Image
