I've taken a great liking to College of Winterhold questline despite its short length. My favorite is when Tolfdir...
Spoiler:
took an entire class to Sarthaal and discover Eye of Magnus. Field study is such a joy. At least I felt like I was attending a college.
but I'm slightly disappointed that the story doesn't involve around the disaster in Winterhold. But overall it is satisfying.

I was hoping to find a story related to the destruction and also wonder why after 80 years Winterhold never repaired itself. Kvatch had more umph then a bunch of Nords blaming the elves then turning into wimps and leaving.

Regarding Saarthaal,
Spoiler:
I particulary liked it when Tolfdir, the instructor who is supposed to be procting you as his students makes you go off alone and solve all the puzzles for him only to have you face the brunt of the big boss at the end while he 'messes' with the eye.

I really loved the Thieves Guild.

The Dark Brotherhood quests were "meh", but the ending was much better than in Oblivion and I was happy to see Lucien and Shadowmere again. It's just a shame they left the most boring characters alive.

The College of Winterhold started off really well but it was too short and predictable, you could see from a mile away that Ancano was up to no good.

As for the war factions, they're both boring in my opinion.

TG and Companions felt like the appropriate length for me and I liked the characters and quests... although Nocturnal was kind of weird, even though she was my favorite Daedric Prince. She's not what I expected at all.

Should we use spoiler tags in this thread, or does the readers understand from topic to stay out if they don't want to get spoiled?

Anyways, IMO TG is good, and at least my previous character was elected to the leader of the guild only after bringing the glory of the guild back; I really felt that I deserved that then. Similarly, I really feel that DB position was deserved, for the ultimate job you made. In the other hand, getting Companions and MG leadership was far too quick and felt undeserved. For example, my previous character was a melee fighter, having practically no any sort of skills in magic (Soul Trap being only more regularly used spell), and suddenly she was an arch-mage? What I would have expected, would be that you would need to complete the MG questline and the ritual quests (to prove that you really know something about magic) before being chosen to lead the guild. Now it felt quite funny that all the mages were teaching their new arch-mage in arcane arts :D Similarly, I would thought that being a harbringer would required completing the questline and some sort of extra jobs like with TG.

If I compare guild quests between Skyrim and Oblivion, here are my thoughts:

- Fighters Guild vs. Companions: I think both are just OK, with their own pros and cons

- Mages Guid vs. College of Winterhold: Mages Guild had a clear agenda, College of Winterhold is quite short. In both games, I can't help me having a feeling that mages choose their arch-mage quite randomly, without needing any sort of qualifications in arcane arts. But maybe it is so, arch-mage is just a puppet and the wizards really do not care who is running the guild, as long as they can concentrate on their own studies...

- Thieves Guild: The Ultimate Heist in Oblivion was very interesting quest, and the quest line in Skyrim is IMO good. Personally, I feel that the problem in both quest lines is that they really do not teach you the skills that you need, unlike the fighters' quests. You need to have relative high Sneak and such already, if you want to make them "in thief's way"

- Dark Brotherhood: I liked Skyrim's one more than Oblivion's. But I had to admit that completing The Purification in Oblivion was quite hard for me (emotionally) at first time, and even later I thought if I could somehow skip it...

- MQ: I have enjoyed it in both games

- Civil War: Imperial side was quite quick, I have not yet played Stormcloak side (but I am working on it). Anyways, I liked the larger battles it had, I really felt being a soldier in a war.

For the record I thought Astrids character was awesome-ly designed. She had a nice posterier
"I saw a baby the other day, filthy creatures"
"For no one - no one in this world can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts."
Points to sword.
"This, you can trust."

Gotta agree with you there
And she had one of the best voices in the game. I felt sorry for her at the end of the questline, wish she had lived but the whole traitor thing also made her character more interesting.

Yeah I did kind of enjoy the DB questline in Skyrim, but pretty much every quest in the Oblivion one destroyed the ones in Skyrim. Especially the Purification. But I though it had some good plot twists especially when
Spoiler:
you figure out that the Emperor was just a decoy. I watched my friend do it a few days after I finished the whole questline and the look on his face was priceless :D

Which kind of shows you that the current Emperor had no balls to begin with. It's like the courage and great rulership of the Empire died with the Septim line.

Ok so i liked the thieves guild, but there were some things i didnt care for too much. It felt as if, to me at least, that it was almost two seperate entities. Theres the thieves guild, and the nightingales, both of which are cool but dont really tie together well. For instance, technically the only thing that really restored the thieves guild was getting a foothold in all the cities, and felt like it had nothing to do with the nightingales. And, the nightingales are like these agents of nocturnal, which might i add is like more BA then anything, but their presence doesnt really seem to me to influence the guild. Just wish it was tied together more.

And stealing a flippin elder scroll from THE imperial palace?!?!?!? how can you top that? Oblivion TG > Skyrim TG

Hmm,
Spoiler:
if you take the route of killing the guy who made the contract for the emperor, the player character seems to think he's an 'honorable' I think it was man. I thought he died pretty nobly. Him having a decoy at the poisoning wasn't him being weak; they already knew you were coming and it was a trap. He didn't whine or beg for his life; in fact he seemed quite at peace with the inevitable and I also liked that he said some words honoring the DB.
I haven't played the Imperial quest yet, but I thought that the Stormcloak one was fun- but too easy. My level 20 (at the time) thief normally had to rely on bows and sneaking to keep himself healthy.
Spoiler:
When attacking Imperial forts and cities, it was just a slaughter. I do play on the standard difficulty, but the Imperial troops were just so weak. Instead of being cautious, I learned to just sprint in and one or two hit sword everyone (yay for putting it all into Stamina). I never felt like I was in any danger and just sprinted around the battlements.
