What's the quickest time taken to complete Oblivion?

Post by Tiber-Septim »

How long does it take you to complete the Oblivion main quest?
What is your record time?

I turned the difficulty all the way down and did it in 3 days (a few hours per day) :)

I believe the quickest time recorded was around 1hr 45 mins or so...and I don't remember how long it took me to do the main quest, I usually don't really bother with it as I do other things (mass murder, mass steal, guilds)

My time for actually doing it? Around 2 months, I could probably do better if I tried but Oblivion is so BIG!

I did it in about a day. It was raining outside, and had nothing to do when I was on vacation, so I thought "speedrun". Think it took me about 2 hrs to be exact. Rushing through on easy difficulty.

I did that paintbrush trick out of curiosity, took me about half hour to do it but would never do it again as it basically broke the quest tags for me. In my normal games takes me about a day as I always do it first so that every main plot npc lives. (have a thing about characters dying on me)

I created a new character specifically for doing the main quest and finished it in just under 8 hours over 2 days.

Isn't it funny how we can always complain about our present employment situation? My part-time job seriously cuts into my doing other stuff time.

But over the end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010 (a period of unemployment, but in a good way), I did a 100% completion character. 260 hours or thereabouts. I've never really tried to finish the main quest quickly. I just screw around, and get to whatever quests, whenever. So I end up clocking 100-300 hours per character, playing anywhere from an hour a week (permanently employed) to about 10-12 hours a day (completely unemployed and with no housework or homework to do).

I did the paintbrush trick... I did it perfect it took me about 5 minutes to beat the main quest! I know a trick to get by dagon too.
Spoiler:
Not sure if this is much of a secret but if you make a really strong destructive spell (100 dmg +) Dagon will explode into a pile of mush for a good 5-10 seconds :)

Not counting the paintbrush glitch, I can speed run it in a few hours. The main quest is rather short.

If you just mean the main quest after you exit the sewers it took me 4 weeks.
If you mean from delivery of the amulet to seeing Akatosh, 4 game-days, waited after I did everything else to do main quest.

I did it few days ago for the first time. It took me about 2 weeks, but I believe it can be completed in under 20 hours.

The official line is that the ENTIRE game (all possible quests) has about 40 hours of gameplay. Considering that the Main Quest is MUCH shorter than all the guild and miscellaneous quests combined, and can be done at Level 1, an average of 8 hours or less sounds about right.

Bet you someone's gonna sit playing a marathon all-day session with a stopwatch now.

The biggest Oblivion bugbear for me is that you CAN do the Main Quest at Level 1. Also, the different quest lines feel "disconnected" from each other, and there's no real reason to level up because enemies level up WITH you, so they're never too hard to beat. It's TOO easy, and the Difficulty slider just makes it feel TOO artificially stacked against you and unrealistic. Bashing away at a Mudcrab with a Warhammer and it can kill you with one graze of a claw, for example. Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul goes some way to addressing the problems by increasing the difficulty "naturally", introducing stronger enemies earlier at random, and making some areas VERY dangerous until you level up, but it only succeeds partway. You can still do the Main Quest at Level 1.

Morrowind had it balanced beautifully. The Main Quest was interwoven with the guild and Great House quest lines, which involved visiting areas with enemies unbeatable until you'd levelled up sufficiently to face them. This was reason enough to WANT to level up and improve your character. And the Main Quest's final destination, Red Mountain area and Dagoth Ur's fortress, wasn't even survivable until at least Level 15 to 20, preferably higher. So there was a natural progression to the game which led to extensive exploration and character development. Just what a die-hard RPG fan wants in an RPG.

Hopefully, Skyrim won't be as "dumbed down" as Oblivion and we can get back to some REAL old-school "sense of danger lurking around every corner" RPG'ing, levelling up in fear for our lives again instead of taking a walk in the park and being menaced by the occasional toy poodle on a leash baring it's teeth.

I believe when I recieved the game, it was summer, so I had time off during the afternoon, and I was in a Fable state of mind (ick) and was obsessed with getting the main quest done first. So I think about three days. Best main quest ever. And for the record, I like Oblivions MQ better because it is WAY longer than the main quest in Skyrim.
