What? Competition? Where did that come from? Besides you, who mentioned competition?
No one, he meant not every one plays to have a challenge or a completion to see who wins on very hard ect.
And I am not most people... I am people, and I'm sure there are plenty of people that play games like Skyrim for a challenge, at least in some form or another. Those challenges are what makes TES games fun.
Not a fact, I for one find it fun to but not evrey one dose, and certingly not the majority of the pepole.
I keep re-reading your post to try and make sense of it... It's up there as one of the dumbest posts I've read.
It makes sense and is in no way dumber then yours, he is saying most peole dont play games for "hard and challaenges" thats not dumb, its a statement of how gaming is now.

how ever this
. Your options are simple.... harden up.
I could say the same to you, the gameing world is not going to change for you lighting up. (I dont mean that at all I'm just saying you are basicly sayign evrey one should play on hard games becuse you like to play on hard games)

I never said everyone should play games for competition or a challenge or to see who wins on hard.
I never said that all games should be hard, or everyone should play on hard, because I like too.
He referred to me directly, when I said crank up the difficulty. There shouldn't be a difficulty slider... I have no issue addressing that.

I seriously doubt any one comes on here (forums) to change the gaming world.

It is a dumb post because he's saying people play games for FUN not competition or challenge. But it is FUN to have a challenge and competition.

WTF?

To you, yes. To others, maybe not. Personally, I play Elder Scrolls for the chance to explore, to roleplay, etc, not to see how many different ways I can die. Hence, and I will admit to this, I always use God Mode. To me, games such as Morrowind and Oblivion are more about the plot than the game play. It is always ‘Which method would I do this quest?’ or ‘How would that NPC respond to that line to questioning?’ than ‘Will I survive this?’ To me, a game doesn’t interest me if there’s no plot, and I’d rather get to that plot and have fun rather than follow the rules.

I'd rather relax, not care what others think of me, and get on with the game.

Well of course to me. I am the one saying it's dumb.

Exploration is a challenge. Challenge = Fun. Fun is why you play a/the game.
Role-playing is a challenge. Challenge = Fun. Fun is why you play a/the game.
(Not if you're in god mode. Would I expect more from a female gamer? No.)

The difficulty adds to the challenge. Take out the slider... and, like another post said, pick and stick on creation. If you want to play 'easy' for fun...do so. If you want to play 'hard' for fun, go for it. (If you want to cop out and cheat, well.... yeah... woohoo go for it!)

You don't need the "Oh, I've hit a difficult spot, better zip that difficulty slider down to get passed it. It completely ruins the whole point of designing 'the hard areas/parts'

It won't matter to a cheat either way.

Who plays TES to see how many different ways they can die? And even if they did, isn't that still a challenge? A fun challenge? "Awesome! I died drowning, tick that off the list"

Or are you saying if you weren't in god mode that's all you'd be doing? Dying? They have a difficulty slider don't cha know? (Nudge, Nudge)

Why is it dumb for someone else to play a game differently than you? I don't think you're an idiot, just because you prefer playing differently to me. For me, the challenge is in getting through a dungeon without anyone seeing me, not fighting directly. Role-playing for me isn't a challenge, it's an adventure. I like making a character and playing them through, from the decisions they make to the details of their daily lives. Different people like different things, which is why they have different difficulty settings.

I probably won't die if I turned off God Mode, I just like having it on so I don't have to interrupt the flow of my story if I die.

Oh, and regarding the female gamer comment, if you're trying to get a rise out of me, sweetie, don't bother. I have much more fun bits to play with than you. ;)

I don't think anyone is an idiot either.

I agree, people do like different difficulty settings.

I was honestly expecting a little rise out of my comment. Hats off to you. You obviously play a better game than I. (Which in fact is a whole lot easier, in god mode)

So why are you against having it (difficulty slider) in the game? (referring to page 3 of this topic) If you crank it up, you crank it up. If I don't, I don't. So why remove it?
Harden up? Play Demons Souls if you really want a hardcore challenge, but don't alienate core fans of another game for the sake of difficulty.

The problem I see with locking the difficulty slider in the beginning is the opposite of most. Instead of sliding it down to get past a hard dungeon what if you start out and you create your character and get it just how you like it to look then you face your first few enemies and realize wow this is easier than i thought I want more challenge. If the slider is locked in are you really going to start a new game? But if the slider isn't locked you can just incrimentally increase it til you find your sweet spot

Also SilentPsycho, you are my hero. That response made me laugh after especially cuz lostlast's comment was kind of a low blow.

Finally Lostlast you need to chill the f out. people's response to you may have been misunderstood but I'm just saying that if everyone misunderstands what you are saying then that in and of itself is saying something.

Da Boss likes to jump in and do that in threads, stir things up.
Seen him do it to me and others, try not the bite when he does it next time.

Oh and a tip for everybody, if you are like me and love friendly debates with friendly players and value friendly players opinions on various topics, but hate having trolls jump in and spoil them. Just click on the trolls name, and under their avatar image you will see Add friend/ Add Foe. Click on Add Foe and they will be cast out of your UESP world for good and in to Oblivion, never to bother you again.

Leaving you to enjoy the peaceful friendly intelligent debates the peaceful friendly players make around here.
It is the ultimate anti troll device, do not be afraid to use it :)

Also I have a found that if a person starts saying negative things about you, they are trolling and making a post personal, usually flame baiting you. Moderators who use that rule and moderate the trolls who do that, send a message to friendly lurkers that their forums are safe to use which enables some deep debates to take place because nobody ever makes it personal. When trolls are allowed to get away with it, they send the opposite message and it scares people away and stifles debate because those who would have gotten involved do not want to risk it.

I use this rule on my own website and we talk about religion politics, and all sorts of stuff, try doing that on a site without that rule and see how far you get :)

Calling his posts trolling is pretty harsh. You can't outlaw light teasing. He's still furthering the discussion... Somewhat, while using a vocabulary that's still acceptable.

Plus while i know he has trolled I have seen some posts where he gives a valid opinion and new way to look at something. while sometimes sarcastic it is not always trolling but more or less hyperbole to to get people to see how obsurd they are being. as for the add foe i don't use it because then you aren't getting the full discussion regardless of what is being said or who is saying it.

So your not saying its dumb yet you are?
… or am I miss reading this?

Role-playing is a challenge. Challenge = Fun. Fun is why you play a/the game.
(Not if you're in god mode. Would I expect more from a female gamer? No.)
If you have a challenge in those why bother with difficulty, you don’t need to be on hard to have challenges and even then not every one finds having to hit mud crabs more or having guys who can beat you fun

Some people like being unstoppable in games
The difficulty adds to the challenge. Take out the slider... and, like another post said, pick and stick on creation. If you want to play 'easy' for fun...do so. If you want to play 'hard' for fun, go for it. (If you want to cop out and cheat, well.... yeah... woohoo go for it!)
Or just pick it at the start and don’t touch the slider at all

why the fact that its there bug you?

you can do this if you want but you cant expect every one else to
You don't need the "Oh, I've hit a difficult spot, better zip that difficulty slider down to get passed it. It completely ruins the whole point of designing 'the hard areas/parts'
Game makers know not every one is playing for that so it’s not like its “wrong” to do that
If I get in to a hard of spot the game is no longer fun, granted my to hard is when in a game I have like 50 health left and things all around me because of an auto save

Playing hard games is sometimes the worst thing for me as a gamer, there is a reason there are sliders

Who plays TES to see how many different ways they can die? And even if they did, isn't that still a challenge? A fun challenge? "Awesome! I died drowning, tick that off the list"

Many people play TES for many things, heck some of us react a guys life, thats no weirder then his, it can be quite fun to play on very easy kill all the guards in a twon
its still a challenge, a very, very, very fun challgen, that is easy to do but long

it passes the time and lets you have fun and its not hard

what’s wrong with that?
and then when I want hard I just crank up the difficulty with out having to go though the tutorial and build up my guy, which is NOT fun if UI have to do it evrey time I feel like chnaging

I also like making bears high dificty then rats, is there anythign wrong with that?

Here he goes on a Tolkien rant again!

From what I have seen, heard, observed, drooled at etc. Skyrim has gone that step further and created a realistic fantasy world. Wait!...that doesn't make sense...well you know what I mean. Those people playing Betas and demos want to see everything the game has to offer so they've gone sprinting through the trees looking for anything and everything...and pretty much everything has smashed them in the face and killed them...well now that isn't surprising is it?!

I think it's human nature, i'm sure when Tolkien first wrote LOTR, Frodo woke up one morning, picked up his knife, ran non-stop for 6 hours, reached farmer Maggots field and got stabbed in the face with a pitchfork :P

I welcome challenge, I welcome complexity and quite frankly - my first stroll through a town by twilight in Skyrim is going to make me wet so i'll happily work within my character's limitations until I know the game...you know, when it's actually released and we can play it?!

Guys, lay off the discussion of who is trolling who, and stop the arguing. This is not the place for that. If you got a problem with someone, take it to PM's or ask a mod for help. Don't bicker with each other here. Nanza has already stepped in once. Knock it off.

The moderator has spoken.......

So back on topic.

The difficulty slider on oblivion has proven very useful to me.

At 25% its perfect for mages, between 25% and 50% its perfect for warriors so I use it all the time. Though when I make a movie for youtube with the difficulty set to 50%, it takes a lot of hacking and slashing to kill something and that usually earns me some "lamo" "noob" comments. Where as when I set the difficulty to 25% and kill things quickly, that earns me the respect of the users watching the video and I get nothing but praise.

I have actually told some people who love to flame bait on youtube that my difficulty was at 50% AFTER they name call because I cannot take out a Daedroth in 1 hit. At which point they usually get quite rude for some reason.

So there is a red hot tip for you, if your recording video footage of your game for youtube, then EASY is the new ELITE mode apparently :)

It'll be very interesting to see how the lockdown (when you explore an area, the difficulty in that area won't change later on) feature works. If you explore the whole of Skyrim in level one-five, will it turn the world into n00btown? I assume that some areas are just hard, but could you actually make the rest of the world easy by rushing through everything?

Or have I completely misunderstood what little info we have on this subject?

I think that areas are levelled permanently and not by the level the player was when they found it. like if you go rushing into a level 50 area at level 5 it won't be levelled to you but instead just own an innumerable amount of times.

Nope you got it right, that is how Todd said it worked.

I have not liked that either, it will lead to a style of play that involves doing as little as possible early on, a little like waiting for level 40 to do the shivering isles so you get good weapons.

In order to make it work they will have to either remember exactly what spawned their or level lock the area. If they level lock an area and the control system is a script not hard coded, mods may be able to fix it later. They will need a way to select levelled lists if that is how they intend to do it.
