A few brief questions/comments about the Word Wall

Post by leftsock33 »

Admittedly, I am brand new to this forum, but not new at all to TES or this wiki.
First, Is anyone working on decoding the word wall?
Second, If nobody is I am definately working on it.
Third, Since I am working on it I am also devising a cipher to translate Dragon language to English.
Fourth, The list of known words, are there more than that?
Last, If somebody has already made it this far let me know so my efforts are not in vain. :D

If anyone wants to help let me know. Sorry if this appears as a newbie trying to butt into an established community, but I was just hoping to garner a little support from other fans of the series.

I searched for it and didn't find it. I found the thing that translates the Dragon Alphabet into their corresponding sounds.

On this page is a transcription of the word wall from E3.
There is no translations as far as I know. Only two words from it is known, MeyZ ("come") and Sovngarde, which is a name from the Nord mythology for afterlife.

There is also a word wall visible in the E3 demo. I haven't found any analysis of that one, I've tried to write down what it says:

Code: Select all

 AETHIEGAL VAHRFKIV
 KENRAV IE VFR RONA?
?ORIIK PINRAAR SE SOVNGARDE
       NAAL ?L
And something more before ORIIK, at least one word and one letter
Some letters are almost impossible to see (the ones with question marks is where I don't ever dare to guess). And "VFR" really needs a vowel, so that's probably wrong ;)

Interesting to note is that they use a different font in-game, all letters look a bit different that the cover font, more "rugged". E.g. the 'O' looks quite different. It's quite clarly a font though, all 'O's look the same.

Also, the E3 demo might not have been fully done, one of the few words I recognize is spelled differently, "NAAL" on the wall instead of "NaaL" (using the single letter for "aa") on the cover art.

Perhaps they are linguistic inconsistancies (as with any language) :D
I'm still trying to crack that word wall though.... :?

Which word wall is it you're working on? The physical one at E3 or the one in the demo from E3?

I wish you best of luck! If you find anything, please share it.

Personally I'm trying to memorize all the words... But it's ending up with me spending more time on writing a web page to help me learn that actually learning anything :P A hackers curse...

Also I'm trying to figure out what they are saying in the Skyrim theme music... Kind of tricky, but that should probably go in a separate thread. ;)

I believe it is QETHSEGOL, not AETHIEGAL. I know it doesn't exactly run off the tongue, but if you look at the first letter, the mark to the right goes down past the top of the main stroke. if you compare it to A's later in the wall, their marks are much shorter, more like triangles. as for the S, same deal, look at the other I's and you'll find that the marks are much smaller than this example. As for the O, although the placement seems somewhat off, I believe it's much more important that they're marks than dots. You'll find the position of many of the marks slightly displaced, but the direction and type of mark is the important part. I can even see you agree with me, RONA, is correct, you completely switched your translation when you could see the two letters next to each other.

My full translation of this is
QETHSEGOL VAHRUNIV
KENROV SE VUD RONA_
ZILLE YARIIK PINDAAR SE SOVNGARDE
NAAL QO

The interesting thing is, of course the last line, NAAL QO, which translates to "By Wrath" now, It could either be that the sentence before is saying that someone is going to SOVNGARDE, and he/she is getting murdered(Die by wrath), or the Author of this passage is QO, most likely some dragon in that case.

the only Problem of course is the mark after the A in RONA, it certainly doesn't resemble any of the letters we know. However, since, obviously, it's no letter we've used, I've managed to deduce it is one of these letters: B D ey ii J W. currently, I'm Leaning towards W, because it's the only letter with a bottom horizontal mark, but it could be any of those.

On another note, I found an unlisted skyrim lets play that managed to get out 6 episodes before being taken down, and the player there went to the SAME dungeon and found a completely different Word Wall. I managed to translate that as well.

HET NAK FaaL VahLAK
ReiNMaaR RA RAVahGALI
ahRK aaN FUS RA UNSLaaR
RahGOL ahRK VULAM

which can be slightly translated

here NAK FaaL VahLAK
ReiNMaaR RA RAVahGALI
and a force RA UNSLaaR
RahGOL and VULAM

OH, I just realized, BOTH of these were at the same place, as in, within an old tomb, right? possibly these both speak of the demise of the dead who, obviously, is right behind you. maybe this is a warning;
"here lies ____
beware, he's still alive
and a force to be reckoned with
(some signature, good luck, or similar statement, maybe live long and prosper)"

Following the number of words and common words, possibly says

"here lies FaaL VahLAK
Undead, be vigilant
and a force be Reckoned
Gold and Glory"

Nice work!

So I'd guess the wall in the E3 demo wasn't the real deal then - they used none of the new letters (aa, ei etc) and the text was probably wrong :P

So I guess on friday we'll get some more answers.

I don't know about you, but as soon as I see any dragon text in the game I'll probably sit with that for a while ;)
