Endgame jobs.
Whoah. Guys. I had a visit from Inspiration, she put a gun in my mouth and made a brain slushy. And while I was piecing myself back together, I had this thought:
What if, after you take care of Alduin and save Nirn, you could use your fame to start various jobs: You know, you could be sort of a celebrity, signing autographs(Yes, a bit of a Fable route), if they have any Arenas, you could make "celebrity appearances", maybe you use your reputation as a hero to, y'know, start something akin to a "private eye service"(I'm thinking shades of Angel here), or whatever else.
Guys, what do you think?

Things you can only do as the Champion or savior or messiah or whatever you'd call someone who saves Skyrim? Sounds fun.

Yeah! Could be fun. The talk about only doing night missions as a vampire inspired me. I was like, "What would a vampire do, to only do things at night? I know, set up his own "hero" business, and of course, make sure he set night hours!"mars wrote:Things you can only do as the Champion or savior or messiah or whatever you'd call someone who saves Skyrim? The trouble is that for people who want to ignore the main quest a large portion of the game would be cut off for them. (I always do the main quest but for those who don't)

You can't expect everyone to chew your food and stuff it down your throat. If Skyrim is as casual as Oblivion by letting you do everything regardless of factors that are clearly of imprtance I will be seriously dissapointed.

I'm not sure that would happen though.
With the whole unlimited freedom thing, you'd probably only get people pointing you out at most.
But, it is something I would really like. Getting benefits for your work, instead of crappy armour.
Zod, you dun' goofed.

A large portion of the game is already cut off from anyone who ignores the main quest, or the fighter's guild, or the mages guild, etc.Rat Kiosk wrote:The trouble is that for people who want to ignore the main quest a large portion of the game would be cut off for them. Having something more at the end of the main quest would be cool. In Oblivion the end of each of the guild quests gave you multiple benefits (houses, followers, items) but the main quest only gave you a set of armor that's probably outclassed by the time you get it.

Re: Endgame jobs.
Plus, with the Radiant Whatever(TM), they could just keep the random jobs coming, I'm sure. That's really what I was after when I did the Fighter's Guild and Dark Brotherhood missions. I wanted stuff to do, forever! Instead when you got to the top, nothing else happened. I hated that Oblivion was really just a set of dominoes on a really big table, waiting for you to push one over.DarthVader317 wrote:A large portion of the game is already cut off from anyone who ignores the main quest, or the fighter's guild, or the mages guild, etc.Rat Kiosk wrote:The trouble is that for people who want to ignore the main quest a large portion of the game would be cut off for them. They definitely need a better endgame feel. There were perks, sure, but apart from SI, the jobs were pretty much completely meaningless.

A politics line would definitely spice things up - the rebuilding Kvatch line that was originally planned sounded quite fun...mars wrote:Killing monsters in various settlements soon lost its charm. I doubt it was fun. It was cut because it apparently didn't influence the game enough to be added in. I would have still loved it though.

Re: Endgame jobs.
Sparks an idea, but assuming that the various clans of Skyrim need to be united to defeat Alduin; this might not actually entail a permanent alliance settlement, but rather just a temporary accord to deal with the larger threat. So they could actually leave the real resolution of the civil war until after Alduin is defeated; so defeating him will be the "end" of the game for the Dragonborn, but it isn't the end of the troubles in Skyrim.TheNightFather wrote:They definitely need a better endgame feel.
At that point you'd then have the option of having Skyrim become independent, stay in the Empire with full support, or some more extreme options such as making them independent under your own rule, or worsening the civil war for your own amusement.

Re: Endgame jobs.
When it comes to endgame jobs, and afterplay value, the new dynamic quest additions in Skyrim might be quite a blessing. In Oblivion, this system simply didn't exist, so it couldn't be used effectively, and was only briefly addressed in The Shivering Isles, when after becoming Madgod, players can save random settlements from monsters. Becoming madgod was actually quite disappointing, because I was actually expecting Godlike abilities, such as making plants sprout up from targeted spells.
Back to Skyrim- Finishing major quests should theoretically reduce the player's options, as no government leader/liason should get into an arena brawl, or something like that. I'm all for unlockable random quests at the end of a game, but they must be fitting. I wouldn't want to just be assigned a petty dungeon to clear if I worked my butt off saving the entirety of Skyrim. After the main quest (by definition the most epic quest of the game), anything else would seem too easy.

Who cares?
There are two types of gamers - roleplaying and casual gamers. No matter what you are, you have to realize that if you don't want to do something, you have to take the consequences. If you don't want to learn lockpicking or magic to open locks, don't complain that you can't, because it's part of your roleplaying experience. That makes about as much sense as expecting the widow of a man you killed to still give you quests. If you make everything open to everyone regardless of roleplaying choice, that's contrary to the whole idea of roleplaying. You're supposed to have limitations - if you're going to be a blacksmith, you do blacksmithy things, and don't complain when you can't enchant things due to your roleplay. If you want to do everything, you're going to have to do everything, and you're either going to have to come up with a character who can.

Re: Endgame jobs.
Great thread for sure... Either way jobs after your done kicking a$$ in the game is really cool! Using fame to make a living is a given idea... How bout (I'm going to sound dumb if this was already mentioned) using infamy to get a job? What if the Dovakiin really screwed up his life and the main quest, maybe made some bad choices through his life, had some skooma, and so on. Then you would have to get a common job (working for an NPC that pays you weekly) until you can redeem yourself and do a mini quest to show people that you can be famous!

First post on the forums! (inbeforenoob) Hey guys
Relating to the Viking concept of heroic status, I think it would be cool if once your character become famous to a certain extent, he would have warriors hunt him down and challenge him to fight, simply to increase their own fame. Obviously, the more famous someone was, the more frequent / powerful his challengers would become. It'd stop you getting rusty. And I think, by restricting it to towns and cities, and voiding the crime / bounty of the fights (as it's an official challenge, and both parties are consenting), you'll be saved from harrassment during quests and exploration.. Thoughts?
Considering Skyrim is based on Scandinavian / Viking culture, I couldn't think of a more fitting activity for a renowned hero. Viking heroes always attempted to show their strength and prowess, to strengthen the legend that followed them. I think it'd be perfectly acceptable in norse culture, though I don't know how closely Bethesda are making the Nords to the Scandinavians.Finishing major quests should theoretically reduce the player's options, as no government leader/liason should get into an arena brawl
