If they aren't in My Documents/My Games/Oblivion/Saves, then no, you can't find 'em. (Which if they were that would be strange.)

If you're on a console, no you can't find them.

I just realized something, the game should recognize the save files if they were in the folder, so, the files might have been deleted.

Are you sure the save you used is in there.

You can get hard drive recovery tools (because a little known fact is that when something's deleted, it still stays on the disc until it's overwritten) to search all the files (including deleted ones) for your saves, but they can be expensive, and it would be a little overkill to do so.

But you don't HAVE to buy them, you can also ask in a computer store. They can often recover lost files, though of course not free of charge.

You don't have to double post. :/ Not everyone can get to your post right away so just be patient, but I guess I'll give a go at it:

Perhaps take the saves out, rename them, and put them back in.

actually there is a open source "undelete" programe i used once that i accidentaly "removed" my firefox profile. can't remember the name, but i have it on my other computer.

as for the saves, if you found them then if they are in the saves folder they should be recognised and work (even if you move them from one computer to the other). if they still don't work i would make a back up of the save file and then try to create a few new ones, to see whewre the game puts them and if everythign behaves normally. because if it doesn't then you might have to reinstall the game. if it does then just put your fiels where the game is putting them and they should be fine.

P.S.

i hope you don't have some sort of virus that corrupted your files.

make sure the filetype is correct, its .ess and .bak so make sure they weren't changed; also, theres a chance you files just might be corrupted, so you might have to start over.

I somehow deleted both of my most recent saves.
I was excited to find an autosave.bak file, however I am having trouble getting it to work.
I renamed it as .ess but I the game does not see the file, and it is still described as a .bak file.
Part of the problem may be that my computer apparently sees .bak files as AutoCAD files by default.
I think I changed the program association, but I am in over my head.
How do I get the game to read this file?
Oh yea, using vanilla v1.2.0416

Any help is appreciated, as this is a significant setback, although not catastrophic.
