Why did Miraak choose not to kill Alduin, if he believed himself capable of doing it? Why would he choose not to help Hakon and the other Nordic heroes when they requested his aid? I can't really see any downside for Miraak if he had done this, he would have just comes out looking stronger than ever before and would have been seen as a hero by everyone, and feared by Dragons. He certainly seemed powerful enough to pull it off.
Spoiler:
It is quiet possible he was too prideful that he underestimated Alduin and later on you as well. Granted yes when you first meet him, he clearly outclassed you, but he had time to hone and master his new powers thanks to Mora.. which may I add.. saved him before he was killed by a fellow Dragon Priest and had his temple burned to the ground by the dragons. So to say at that time he could simply beat Alduin with confidence?A lie really, he may very well fear Alduin till the day he could match power and surpass his failure

I dunno, Alduin was taken on by 3 Nordic heroes, and they put up a pretty good fight. Now look at Miraak's Temple. there's twenty one dragon corpses surrounding it. I'd say that makes him quite powerful. :P

Spoiler:
Granted they had to use an Elder Scroll to win, if not they surely would of been slain.
Keep in mind Miraak could steal a soul from a living dragon so long as he knew said name.. but I doubt the same trick would work on Alduin.. seeing as he's special.. But I think we all can agree not all dragons are that strong when you compare them to others :wat:

I always wondered why they even had to use the elder scroll to win. We basically used the same strategy as them, and the same thu'um as them, on two occasions, and defeated Alduin both times all the same. Not to mention we never even absorbed his soul, so apparently it isn't required?

Well, my Dragonborn can beat Alduin, and I'm not even capable of killing a dragon by saying it's name. So I still think Miraak would mop the floor with Alduin, just as long as he had the ''Dragonrend'' shout. He's already created one shout, ''Dragon Aspect'', so I think he'd be able to handle Dragonrend as well.

But, I suppose in the end, there isn't any way of knowing for sure.

Oh, and one thing I remembered. Dragonborn pokes a bit of a hole in the main quest at the part with Odahviing. Originally, we have to capture the dragon in order to get him to help you, but Dragonborn adds in the ''Bend Will'' shout, which should just allow you to command him to help you. Though you still have to capture him, anyways. It's nothing massive, really, and would have basically lead to the same result.

The whole point is only the dragonborn can defeat Alduin. Hence why the PC succeeds with ease when the others had to cheat using the Elder Scroll.

But we fought him in the same way, using the same shout. And, even as Dragonborn, we didn't absorb his soul. I'm just wondering why we have to be Dragonborn to beat him, as most of the tools we used were available to the old nords.

Perhaps the reason he got beaten this time was because he was in Sovngarde? I dunno...

The whole reason he was beaten easily is because the PC is dragonborn - anyone else wouldn't stand a chance. (Miraak excepted, he could have beaten Alduin, it was probably why he was dragonborn in the first place) Absorbing the soul has nothing to do with it, it's the prophecy which says only the dragonborn can stop Alduin.

Well keep this in mind, Dragonrend is the only sole reason you yourself could beat Alduin, it's sole purpose is to weaken an steal the flight of dragons, forcing them to experience mortality. It was made by those who grew tired of their overlords, and pooled all their hate into this sole creation. The three nordic heroes had this shout, and it was originally from skyrim.

Alduin is the very prime of dragon-kind, and he's granted far more privileges than any other. However if you were to ask what his weakness would be, it's mortality... that is why the 3 heroes stood a chance. Granted they were still backed into a corner but they fared better than any rival dragon could.. why? Bc they have that one, sole shout at their disposal.

So in truth, it's quiet possible Miraak never learned such a shout, the very land he ruled was well isolated, however unlike skyrim, many of it's people still followed the dragoncult and lived in prosperity.. rather than fear. So while he may have mighty powers himself, it does little good if you can't harm or even kill The World Eater. And I will say, there may be some truth to not being able to kill him in Tamriel
"Meyz mul, Dovahkiin. You have become strong. But I am Al-du-in, Firstborn of Akatosh! Mulaagi zok lot! I cannot be slain here, by you or anyone else! You cannot prevail against me. I will outlast you... mortal!"
So it may very well be that he can only be slain in Aetherius or else where.. which is ironic to where he flees to replenish himself.. is the same place he is vulnerable

And in terms of the prophecy, it specifically states the Last Dragonborn.. not just any dragonborn. Granted you never can know for sure who will be the last, but only assume.

This is all well and good, but if you remember, Miraak states that Hakon and the tongues came to him: "They wanted to use me to deal with Alduin - Hakon and the rest. I chose otherwise." so whether or not he knew Dragonrend, had he simply chosen to go along with them, he would have learned Dragonrend and been able to take on Alduin, just like them or us.

And for a power hungry Dragonborn, it seems odd that he would choose not to learn the powerful new ability. :P

But if our god gifted ability of being able to absorb dragon souls is unusable against Alduin, I can't see how us being Dragonborn would hold any importance. The two things that make the Dragonborn stand out as ''The Ultimate Dragon Slayer'' are his/her ability to learn Dragon Shouts easily, and his/her ability to absorb the souls of fallen dragons and permanently kill them. Other than that, we're just the same as everyone else.

@Beta: I agree, the ''not being able to kill him on Tamriel'' thing seems to be the most likely reason for his defeat in Sovngarde

How are Potions of Escape made? Who is the very talented alchemist making them for the TG?

Potions of Escape have both Invisibility and Restore Health effects. The closest thing to a Potion of Escape the player character could make would be:
Spoiler:
Invisibility + Regenerate Health
which could be made using just two ingredients:

Luna Moth Wing and Vampire Dust

Its important not because of the soul absorbing or shouting, but because the PC is the doom-driven hero/heroine of prophecy. Being dragonborn is just the proof.

Sorry, I'm not seeing the significance of this. What makes us special is the soul absorbing and shouting ability, so the whole ''chosen one'' thing falls flat to me if it goes unused. It feels a little cheap to be honest; as if the gods of Nirn (or Elder Scrolls, or whatever) simply have an On/Off switch for Alduin's immortality.

Like i said, the Sovngarde idea seems to make more sense to me. I'm going to stick with that for the time being.

Then the only response is you've got the significances the wrong way round - being dragonborn isn't important, being the fulfilment of prophecy is. Being dragonborn is just a part of it.

A mystery? Hmm... Why are all the male Khajiit in M'aiq's family named M'aiq?

And why are they all such filthy liars.

I can answer this question with another question... M'aig knows many things others do not.. but can M'aig see why kids love the taste of cinnamon toast crunch :sweetroll:

No joke, the 1st that appeared in Morrowind was rather true to his name, he quoted many requests and desires that were not placed in the game, so rather than leave it be.. the developers decided to have a little fun and answer questions in an unexpected way, however he did tell some helpful info.
The 2nd in Oblivion was a bit different.. and personally harder to actually catch :S most of his comments are arguably serious responses to various issues in the game mixed in with humor. Again.. it was a way the developers could about the game.. within the game.
The 3rd, and by far my favorite. "He will make witty comments about the game's strong points, smart remarks to common complaints about the game, or just general references to different aspects of the game." His sense of humor has improved vastly, he's far more common and memorable, and above all he still holds that charm of irony and uniqueness

So really, he's a joke from the creators themselves that was well accepted by the community and became so loved.. they simply chose not to change his name just so he can identify him so easily, plus his references are just so much bliss

I'm pretty sure I've said this somewhere around here before, but I prefer to think that M'aiq is a divinity of some kind.

It just tickles me to think there's some kind of god/spirit that, upon perceiving the nature of the universe, decides to use that knowledge to tell jokes to demigods.

Because love makes men do daft stuff, and Elda is taking advantage of his higher role in society. That said, I've not heard of this before...

Why do some dead bodies never get cleared away? It's quite sickening to see Alvor and his wife still lying by the river, months after being killed by a dragon.
