That can actually be justified by the fact that our weather is so unpredictable while most snowy countries know when to prepare for harsh weather conditions. Or maybe they're just Asian countries and will not dishonour their families by letting some snow stop them.Thelastdovah wrote:Both of you would laugh at our ability to cope in the snow if you ever visit england during the winter and a bit of snow has fallen. Yeh what makes it even more pathetic is that we get a ton of snow every year, yet every year its like a total news spectacle as if weve never had this cold white stuff before.Thelastdovah wrote:Both of you would laugh at our ability to cope in the snow if you ever visit england during the winter and a bit of snow has fallen. Edit... I would say day to day it was unpredictable but as a climate in general we get the snow around the same time most years.

Re: The General Discussion Thread
I'm surprised that salt isn't a trouble here, come to think of it. We don't have moose - those are few and a lot farther north - but we've got lots and lots of whitetail deer.Dohvakiin2012 wrote:Holy cow, Alarra. That's [&@%!] up! I'm glad you're all right damn. Up here, they don't salt the roads because the Moose come and lick them, thus causing more problems. They occasionally gravel them. It also has to be several feet of snow before anything shuts down. Getting snowed in and calling in to work happens for my husband and I at least 1-2 each winter. We had a severe snowfall in late April that isolated us here at home for 3 days. That's pretty average.
High schools here usually get cancelled about 2 times a winter; they're given 2 free days and any more than that has to be made up at the end of the year. My college has not closed once while I've been here, though occasionally teachers cancel their own classes. There was a big blizzard on our last day of exams (a Thursday) last year, and every other college within a good 50 miles closed and rescheduled their exams for Friday, but not us. If it were another day I would've just stayed home, but since it was exams I *had* to go.
My only other interesting blizzard story is one we had two years ago that knocked out our power for 49 hours - a Wednesday afternoon to a Friday afternoon. That was pretty crazy. We were prepared, at least - saved water in pails, etc - but it was annoying. It was my sister's 16th birthday and she had to take her driver's test driving in snow for the first time (she got her temporary license in May, when the snow was gone.) She was afraid of looking messy in her photo, so my mom heated up water in a pot on the grill and washed her hair with that. The DMV guy thought that was pretty funny.

Haha that's a pretty cute story, actually. At least she looked nice for her photo, right?
I love the snow...although it does get pretty annoying after 6 months of it. The winters here are unforgiving, with October-January being the worst months with like 8 hours of sunlight per day, below zero temperatures, heavy snowfalls which bury your car, etc. But at least its fun to play outside and the hiking/snowshoeing is terrific.

Ah, Blizzard. I've only played one of your games, the original Diablo, but I loved the crap out of it. I wonder how good your other games are? I should try Diablo II, World of Warcraft, and Diablo III. Just to see if I've been missing out.
What changed where people at first worshipped WoW and now generally bash it?

Hey now, watch it. Nah, I'm just kidding. If you are talking about on snow, yeah, they're pretty crazy. Sometimes I think I'm the only one who learned how to drive on the snow.Alarra wrote:Yeah, it wasn't fun. I was going around a sharp curve, and it was windy so some snow had drifted several inches deep across the road, though I didn't see it until the last second because the road was white with weeks of salt. I hit that and lost control, flipped onto the roof because the ditch was low, and hit a tree. I was lucky, though - it was positioned perfectly in a gap between two rows of trees, if I hadn't hit the tree at all the car might have kept skidding like a sled to the little house that was really close to the road, and I'd spun so that it hit the trunk. The car was totaled, but I made it out essentially uninjured - just minor scratches and some whiplash that eventually went away.Dohvakiin2012 wrote: Alarra, wow that sounds terrible! Winter driving is pretty darn annoying with the ice under fresh snow. People up here drive like maniacs in the winter, too.
For the most part people are decent drivers. They go a little fast during the first snowfall, but then slide a little and remember what winter driving's like. Wisconsin drivers are pretty good in general; everyone here knows that Minnesota and Illinois drivers are the ones that drive crazy.

Heehee, that is what people say. It's not just a "we're better than everyone" thing, either - everyone seems to be fine with Michigan drivers, just not our other two neighbors for some reason. *shrug* Do they say anything where you live about Wisconsin drivers?Hrolf Alfblod wrote:Hey now, watch it. Not that I'm aware of. It's something I used to hear as a kid though; so and so state has [&@%!] drivers. Don't really hear that anymore.Alarra wrote:Heehee, that is what people say.
