Actually can't you sneak into Castle Dawnguard as a vampire, find the vendors at a later stage of the main questline and through use of Vampire seduction/powerful charm effects buy their normal unaltered inventory? I believe you just can't get dwarven crossbows or magically enchanted bolts (and the relics of course).
From a playstyle-wise point-of-view: what would be the best faction for a pure mage to join? I heard that vampirism offers quite a few advantages which outweigh the disadvantages. It also adds some role-playing potential I think.
My altmer mage is most likely to join the Vampires.

Probably vampire because of the necromage perk. It makes magic more effective against undead which as a vampire means you too.
So we have come to solve every squabble in the village personally? The last thing you never see
You can always cheat the game>_> use console commands to get gear you would otherwise never get.. and spring clean all those dead bodies..
I've been thinking to do that because it's not wholly impossible for an xbox player<_<
On topic, dawnguard generally has more benefits, and I find the vampire lord weak
"I Seek Truth, Not For Power, But For Understanding"
Definitely Dawnguard, more fitting for my character and more perks, though I do want to give the vampiric life a try one playthrough maybe.
"I sit beside the fire and think of all that I have seen,
of meadow-flowers and butterflies in summers that have been;
Of yellow leaves and gossamer in autumns that there were,
with morning mist and silver sun and wind upon my hair."
1. The vampires are scumbags
2. I'm usually a werewolf
3. Dawnguard has huskies
But mostly that last one

My breton archaeologist loves the dwemer. Arielle was a perfect fit with the Dawnguard.
Zorgash, an orc warrior, felt a kinship to Durak. He lost his mother to vampires, and never knew his father.
Whet-Fang was a feral vampire from Blackmarsh. When he learned of the power Lord Molag offered, he knew where he belonged.
Leslana, my dunmeri conjuress, has sought the power of many Dark Lords to restore House Indoril to its rightful place and see the overthrow of the Redoran scum that perverts her homeland.
If i'm RP'ing as a Knight or melee character, I usually go Dawnguard. If going as a Mage or Archer, then Vampires.
The Vampire lord is basically a trumped-up mage - and the relics from the DG questlines don't lend themselves to mages or archers. Well, ok the Enhanced Dwarven Crossbow maybe, but not the Rune Axe, Hammer or shield.
