I hate ads, and I block them. I've blocked all the ads on this website, too. If Daveh weren't getting enough ad money to run this site and started asking for donations, I'd donate in a heartbeat, just as I've donated to other sites in the past.

Do I donate to TESNexus? Not financially. But since I've hosted all of my mods there, some of which are quite popular, I feel like I'm bringing users to the site, which should more than compensate for the lack of ad revenue they might get from me personally (which would actually be zero, since I don't click on ads). Without the content freely given by modders, that site wouldn't have any visitors at all, so I think I've got a valid argument. If the TESNexus admins disagree, they are free to ban me from their site, at which point I'll start hosting my mods elsewhere.

Edit: Also, the amount of technical misinformation in that thread is staggering. Here's how ads and Adblock work. Your computer requests a page from Tesnexus. The page comes back as HTML. This HTML page is nothing but text that tells your browser how the page should look, and what other files it should ask for. Now the browser usually goes out and requests all those additional files, including scripts, stylesheets, images, flash movies, etc. The Adblock plugin has rules which determine whether or not it thinks a certain file will be an ad. If a file that your browser would normally request matches a rule, then your browser simply doesn't request it. That's it. Adblock doesn't actually block anything--all it does is prevent your browser from downloading files that you don't want to download. I feel like, since I own my computer, and I paid for the hardware it uses, I should get to choose which files I do and don't download. If downloading those files is really a precondition to using the rest of the site, then there are ways they could have coded the site to lock me out of the site until I get those files.

some modders have removed theirs already, not really fair of me to name any but...
Clearly a valid argument that without mods no site=no money.
I don´t block at tesnexus but my few mods are at elricm anyhow so I think
it is fair that I get thoose ads.
Still thoose links are one persons opinions, and that could clearly been expressed different, and the language and attitude are somewhat lacking
common courtesy.
With that kind of statement I really don´t feel for donate after that..

I completely agree, and while I like the TESNexus site, after reading that diatribe on Black Tree Gaming, it's very hard for me to feel sympathy for dark0ne. He called me a filthy scum bag and an idiot. Is that a fair assessment of who I am? I sure hope not. But I won't move my mods just yet, because I still like the organization and functionality of the site (probably because I block ads, heh). I didn't pick TESNexus as my host because of any particular love I hold for dark0ne as a person, so I don't really care much that he's impolite.

Even if flaming is permissible on Black Tree Gaming, it's still not what we do here is it??

No, it's not, which is why I added a warning to jaxawier's post. I think it's ok to link to something as long as people know what's in the link, but I don't want to see any of that profanity copied to this forum, please.

I feel the need to leave a comment on blacktree which probably won't be read for a few months about his ignorance of psychology....

Anyway, he's completely wrong. If you never click on ads except to close them then there's absolutely no reason to let them pop up (or show up as it may be)... and now that I know about this little plug-in, I think I'm going to go get it for myself. :D

Unconscious psychological effects notwithstanding, since they only matter if it consciously dawns on you to check out more about the ad, and since the chances are you ignore the ad because there was nothing interesting on it (that could be perceived in milliseconds, before you even realize you've seen it), there's no reason to believe you'd want to check out more about it the next time you see it, so why not just stop it entirely?

K... my two cents are officially added to the jar. :P

And I nearly did it without saying anything about some of the idiots on the forum link.... >.>

I only block ads that have at least one of these traits:
1) annoying and animated
2) are trying to sell women
3) terribly drawn cartoon cleavage
4) annoying Flash, if possible
5) anything that creates new tabs or windows
6) anything that makes sounds.

That actually rules out the vast majority of ads, including the ones used on this site.

In my opinion, if you (the site owner) signs on with companies who use advertising like that, I don't mind punishing you for it by not allowing those ads to load.

To bad that the common perception are that the other moderators there are in high regards as far as I seen, and really can´t do much either.
But clearly there is some good people at tesnexus.

Agree that tesnexus as a site working rather good but there have always been "big" mod-sites and will always be others to come as long as there is a modding community.

And to the point, thoose ads are really a peanut issue, not that important to upset people over, but still he did that in black and white,on internet, forever.
and people get hurt, angry and so forth, understandable.

p,s Also seems to missing things like FW,proxies and such who does some of the same things, depending on configurations but I guess it´s easier to make it easy for one self. d,s

Never judge a person, until you have walked a mile in their shoes.

I'm not saying the Green Tree Gaming Article was not in bad taste. Just put youself in his position for a while though. It wasn't that people use ad-blockers that upset him, it was that people in his forums were telling others what the best ad-blockers to use were.

It is not cheap running a site. Most people tend to take the internet for granted. With the exception of having to pay for a Service Provider, most people think everything on the internet is free.

UESP Forums did not have adverts before. The cost to run UESP & the Forums has even forced Daveh to add them.

There was talk before, about moving all of the UESP Utilities to another server, and putting the Forums on that Server. This was to help The Wiki run better. When the Wiki has a lot of Updates going on at once, the Wiki & Forums run slow, even to the point of not loading pages. This is more noticable on weekends, when people have more free time to work on larger updates/edits.

I actually offered to pay or at least help offset the cost of a second server.

I understand that the internet, and running sites is not free. Which is why I always donate to every site that I frequent. Even though I do not make mods, or download that many, I donate to ORE & TESNexus. I even donate to webcomics. I can afford it, most probably can not. Which is where the adds come in. It is your way to help the sites that you enjoy. If the owner chooses to not charge for visiting the site, I can at least take a few moments to click on a link to help them out, or click on an "X" to close a pop-up.

The alternative, is when the cost gets to be to much, is for the Owner to close the site down.

You know... for not liking people expanding knowledge of the ad-blockers... he sure did a nice job of advertising them himself.

I WOULD donate to sites like the UESP that I go to a lot... but as you so correctly pointed out Jeff, I'm not one that can afford it right now... and I honestly don't know how to donate online. :? Well, to be more correct I could afford it, but only after I finally make the move I'm intending to.

As far as donating to the UESP, see this post: http://forums.uesp.net/viewtopic.php?t=5170

If you want to donate, then donate your time, effort, and goodwill.

Money pays to keep the servers running, but the content and usefulness, and the courtesy of its contributors is what makes a site worth running.

Hi folks,

I've written up a little clarification blurb for people to read on this subject. I can't post it on these forums due to what looks like quite strict anti-spam code labeling me a spammer. I could make a joke here, but I'll decide against it because people are already edgy with me ;D

Anyway, the post is on The Nexus Forums under feedback in the "Can't believe my eyes post". If someone wants to find it and link it here I'd appreciate it :)

DarkOne, I take it you're referring to the 7th post down on this page?:
http://thenexusforums.com/index.php?sho ... 1932&st=10

Sorry, I'm not sure how to get it to link directly to that actual post.

I would like to say a huge thanks to you for tesnexus! (Even though I've only just started using mods myself.) And welcome to uesp! :D

Thanks for the clarification, Dark0ne, and welcome to the UESP :D

New members aren't allowed to post links, which is a rule that stinks for legitimate new members, but also prevents the vast majority of spambots from ever making a post.

Wow, well that is indeed a very lengthy clarification... which I didn't much need but thanks. :P

Anyway, you're actually pretty on the mark when you insinuated americans are slow... it's true of too many to count. *resists the urge to make a political comment*

And sorry if my comments were at all offensive, especially since I don't actually use TESNexus... not being a PC gamer and all....
