According to the wiki, Centaurs essentially stop appearing in the game once your character reaches a certain level. I believe this is also true for certain other types of randonly-spawned enemies.
To my surprise-- and relief-- I was exploring a dungeon on my Level 27 character and rested to recover health and spell points, when my rest was interrupted by a randomly-spawned Centaur. Furthermore, I kept spawning more Centaurs in that dungeon, and in other dungeons, along with other types of enemies that normally stop spawning once your character levels up past a certain point.
It makes me wonder if there's some internal setting (data field) in the game which may have overflowed and "rolled over" as I was leveling up. Note that I've been playing this character for a really long time-- for more than 3 years now. If there is such a data field overflow or roll-over, I wonder if that might be why it's possible to get a main-quest letter late in the game which crashes your game?
