Oblivion in WINE

Post by gregor »

It has platinum rating, but i can not get it to run at all. i get the starting movie to load, but then it crashes.

i followed the advice here on the wiki. does anyone have any other advice with latest wine version (the one i am dealing with is 3.0 which i know is not the latest but this came with the system it seems)? i checked a few other forums (like from the lutris launcher) and there too people have problems.

also does anyone know what is the last version of wine where oblivion worked almost out of the box?

I haven't heard much good since 0.9.32. People have been having your issue for about five years on later versions. I'm not very versed with the platform, so I'm just sorry to say if you're dedicated to getting it to work, you have some challenges ahead of you.

It works.

i added the d3dx9_27.dll but same issue appeared.

Then i found this on older version:
Well you absolutely need to perform some tweaks before the game can run on Debian. You need to override the quartz DLL to native and disable winegstreamer. If you do this then the game will run as it should. Otherwise you won't even be able to get into the main menu. The first time I booted up the game (After the tweaks) the characters' skin was black. After reinstalling my system the skin was colorful as it should be. No idea why. Bug report 20074 in the "Known bugs" section discusses this. Their fix of overriding that DX DLL renders the game unusable for me, so don't do that! Perhaps it may be useful to say that the game ran without any tweaks on Xubuntu 16.04 with the same Wine 2.9. Debian's version of Wine seems to be compiled with different options.
wine & debian instructions:

Furthermore, i also found information on Proton database (Proton is available with Steam) indicating that it all works out of the box if you install the GOG edition using proton. I never got to that point to try it out myself, because i made it work.

some reported that there are sound issues that are then resolved by installing libmpg123-0:i386 however i have't seen them yet, but then again i just made it out of the sewers to try it out. hopefully, it will run somewhat stable. i don't mind to reduce graphics as long as gameplay stays fluent. though most seem to indicate it runs just fine as long as it runs.

the question i would have here is how necessary is it to patch the Gold game edition with oblivion unnoficial patch?
can i do it later on?

at the moment i am otherwise more occupied with Bloodmoon main quest on Morrowind (using OpenMW)...
