I think I know the answer, but I want to double check with a wider audience.
I bought vanilla Skyrim (because I'm dumb), and I've been playing it off and on for long enough that I'm up to level 50, have completed nearly everything besides the civil war quests (because I hate tough decisions), and even paid for and downloaded Hearthfire so I could build houses. But the time is drawing ever closer when I'll want to download and play through Dawnguard and Dragonborn, and I *don't* want to spend another $40 doing so. Nor do I want to start everything all over from the beginning again.
I know I can buy the Legendary Edition, install it, and it will use the saves I've already made, which is good news. But I've read some things that suggest that the copy of Hearthfire I downloaded from PSN will not be compatible with the LE version of the game. Which is to say, the LE of the game won't see that I've installed Hearthfire unless I use the LE dlc option to install it. So... if I install Legendary, don't load any dlc, then open a save... all my Hearthfire stuff will be missing. Or the game will error out because it's confused. Yes?
However, if I were to use the LE to install Hearthfire, then launch one of my saves... will that start me out with brand new Hearthfire, or will it be able to use the info from the PSN-downloaded version to just pick up where I left off? The latter would be preferable: collecting 800 iron ingots, and all the animal hides and deity amulets is not something I'd choose to do again, if possible. I mean, I'd rather spend the money on LE instead of the two dlcs (especially since it costs less than either one of them), and if loading the LE game without enabling its Hearthfire, but with a save that includes the PSN Hearthfire would tank the game, then I guess I'll have to go with LE Hearthfire either way. But it'd be spectacular if I didn't have to do all that all over again.
Or would I have to load a save from before I installed Hearthfire? Eeugh, that would be awful, let's hope that's not the answer.
Ta!

I don't see how loading your game up on Legendary Edition would break it. Just create a new save so you have a backup, and try playing it on LE. If for some reason it's messed up, delete Skyrim from your Game Data folder, install LE, and then try playing it.
Good luck if you decide to get it. Be ready for a lot of annoying vampire attacks.
