Sound like you got the A Mix-Up quest?

Seemed like all i could do was reload and then have one save slot for before talking to anyone who might give quests and another after i'd got a quest - and only use those two slots for those two things.

This is always advisable. Particularly before talking with anyone in a palace, and so you can pick and choose between quests. Eg for the Mages' Guild, I like to do the 'guard person X who is doing something or other against assassins'. Since the quests you are offered are totally random, if you don't fancy the one on offer, just reload until you get one you want to do.

I run it with several standard save points: safely in town, with nothing pending; just before talking to a quest-giver; doing my active quest (sometimes 2 slots, if it's a multi-part quest); finished the quest, but not yet talked with the quest-giver/final point; and a reference save from a couple of quests ago, just in case...

I was forgetting you can buy a horse for just 1,000 gold too and then just change transport mode to horse by cling on the legs and shoes icon
