In Arena, is there a magic class that also uses plate armor?
I don't think there is but I'm not 100% on that. The closest class I can see is Spellsword, but it only uses leather and chain mail armor...I want plate...
I want to use spells so I'll stick with a Spellsword if I have to.
I know but what I meant was I'd like to wear plate armor and use magic but I don't think any of the classes has that. I want to be wrong though.
I know I can play the game with leather and chain mail armor and use spells to compensate but when I'm playing a magic character, I'd like to be able to wear plate armor, like I do in later games.
You could buy plate armor capable of casting spells. These spells are rarely the best ones, and you cannot customize them. They cast the lousy pre-made spells. Ones of note have the spells invisibility, spell reflection, and levitate.
You can supplement those spells with ones from rings, bracers, marks, crystals, and an artifact. Spells you want on your items are shield (or force wall), heal, and spell resistance/reflection.
For offense, I recommend a sword of firestorm or lifesteal.
A good plate armor class is the Knight. Immune to paralysis and repairs weapons and armor. What that second point means is that the spell charges on your spell-casting weapons and armor will recharge when you fast travel. Recently, I mucked around with a knight and was exclusively using an elven longsword of firestorm to kill enemies. It was great at low levels, but the damage of pre-made spells doesn't scale as well as custom spells (Firestorm does 10-30 +1-5/level damage). Still better than swinging a sword at high levels though, plus it comes with like 1500 spell charges. Get one early and it can carry you for the game.
In my opinion, the knight is by far the best "warrior" class because of those advantages.
Like another poster said though, the extra armor rating of plate-armor wearing classes pales in comparison to magic. A custom shield spell can give you hundreds, or even thousands, of hit points. At that point, losing 8 or so less hit points per enemy melee hardly matters.
