Ak-at-Osh

Post by Minor Edits »

In the previous thread on the origins of Akatosh's name, I neglected to bring up this line in Vindication for the Dragon Break:
It is the first of the Exclusionary Mandates that the Supreme Spirit Akatosh is of unitary essence, as is inconclusively proven by the monolinearity of Time. And clearly, the Arc of Time provides us with the mortal theater for the act of Sacred Expungement. Thus it is our purpose upon Mundus to reverse the error of Sanctus Primus and restore Ak-at-Osh to humanadic purity.
"Ak-at-Osh" is suggestive of a connection with the Dragon Language, since there are 2-3 letter words coming together to form a name (not that it's very helpful, since none of those words have been explicitly defined in the dragon language).

But then I noticed that Fervidius Tharn mentions "Akatosh", the Supreme Spirit, and later mentions this "Ak-at-Osh". Which begs the question, are they even the same thing? If not, what is this Ak-at-Osh, and how does it relate to the Temporal Lizard Bird we all know and tolerate?

And while we're at it, is "Fervidius" an awesome villain name, or does it sound like what they would've named dorks during the Roman Empire? I honestly can't decide.

Sounds Kirkbride-esque to me, as if the author was taking the important-sounding-silly-name approach. Besides, I thought the dragons called him Bormahu.

Yeah. The official Dovah name for the First Dragon is "Bormahu" which either means "Our Father" or "Father." Whenever Alduin or Paarthurnax uses the name "Akatosh" it's for the convenience of mortal ears.

I think the Temple of the One and the weird/silly language they use has its own unique origin, probably in Maruhk's tortured mind. Pre-Morrowind lore implied the Temple of the One was based on "an old Nord religion", so it's possible he took some phonetic and stylistic influence from ancient Nords, but other than that I think it's uniquely Cyrodiilic.
Monsters are bred in labyrinths, labyrinths are bred from walls. There is a reason the Giants choose to remain nomadic rather than follow their shield kin the Nords in building permanent settlements. The Tower is the beginning of all walls.
