Men/Mer extending their lifespans
Hi. First time posting. Anyways, just wondering if there are human beings in the lore who've "extended" their lifespans (or does not age) ? I've seen a lot of elves (Gelebor, Fyr, Telvanni wizards) that have lived for thousands of years but the only human beings I've seen that have managed to pull it off are Harkon, Miraak and (possibly) the Nerevarine.

Off the top of my head, Chimere Graegyn. Any vampire, such as Harkon, his wife, or his daughter can theoretically live forever.
Edit - Oh, Ulfgar the Unending! Jeez, it took me a while to remember the name. And I made that page!

Re: Men/Mer extending their lifespans
It's widely believed in Morrowind that all the Telvanni arch-magisters are so old because they've sustained themselves with the Necromantic arts.
Janus Hassildor is a vampire, but the average citizen of Skingrad believes he's lived so long because he's a powerful sorcerer. People seem to accept this without question, so it leads me to believe they have a good reason for thinking a Colovian male can live for hundreds of years through the use of magic.
Abnur Tharn in ESO is another Imperial male (Nibenese) who is said to be very old. He served under the Akaviri Potentates, and they've been dead for many years as of the events of ESO. He barely looks 60 but he must be over 150. He is an accomplished necromancer and sorcerer, himself.

Monsters are bred in labyrinths, labyrinths are bred from walls. There is a reason the Giants choose to remain nomadic rather than follow their shield kin the Nords in building permanent settlements. The Tower is the beginning of all walls.

Residing in a plane of Oblivion appears to be one way to do it. In the Shivering Isles we have Ciirta. Not only did she survive one Greymarch, she lived long enough to see the beginning of the next.
Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.
Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

Yeah, he actually mentions this in dialogue. Can't remember him giving an explanation though.Pilaf The Defiler wrote:Abnur Tharn in ESO is another Imperial male (Nibenese) who is said to be very old. The Isles exist outside of Linear Time. That's not really extending your lifespan.Dark Spark wrote:Residing in a plane of Oblivion appears to be one way to do it. In the Shivering Isles we have Ciirta. Not only did she survive one Greymarch, she lived long enough to see the beginning of the next.

From what I understand, it isn't entirely certain what happens to most people when they die. However, if you form a special relationship with a god, you get to keep your sense of self and have a spirit body, so its kind of like extending your life. Look at Gallus the nightingale, he was an Imperial and got to keep his mind and spirit after death.
Why did the dragonhunters of old burry the dragons whole?

Immortality isn't the hardest thing to come by in Tamriel. To put it in the most simple terms, magical powers can lead to immortality. As Savos puts it: "What you learn here will last you a lifetime. Several, if you're talented."

Re: Men/Mer extending their lifespans
He's pretty open about being an accomplished Necromancer. During a quest in Coldharbour he helps you construct a Flesh Atronach and even states he could make you into a fine Necromancer if he had the time or patience for taking an apprentice. Considering his family history as well as the obvious powers of his descendant Jagar, I'd say practices for extending the lifespan beyond the normal are common among the battlemage aristocracy of Nibenay.legoless wrote:Yeah, he actually mentions this in dialogue. Any vampire could live forever. I know a few named people, but I can't think of them right now. I'll edit if I remember.

There's also various humans who have turned themselves into lichs.

Thanks for the answers! Forgot Ulfgar lived for more than 500 years. Anyways, how about the Greybeards? I mean, there's just four (not counting Paarthunax of course) of them and they don't seem to have any acolytes or successors or whathaveyou lined-up to take their place.

Re: Men/Mer extending their lifespans
That could just be due to game limitations. If you recall the Imperial city in Oblivion was the size of what an actual small village would be. I'm sure that there are quite a few more greybeards than were shown and I feel like they probably aren't too short on students to learn the way of the voice either.

I think there's a good chance that the Greybeards have extended their lives, and you could go ahead and think that if you wanted, but we have no information on the matter.

Re: Men/Mer extending their lifespans
They can and do take disciples. Ulfric was training there as a boy before he decided to join the Great War. The fact that they train people to take their places upon death implies they do eventually tire out and die of old age. I believe this is probably a slightly higher age than the average human male reaches, but not wizard-lord levels. About the only magic they seem to employ aside from Shouting is the regenerate health potions lying around their temple, which to be honest probably help them get out of bed in the morning and kneel more than anything else.

There are only five of them, including Paarthurnax. Arngeir makes that clear. Just as there are only five(max) Blades.Zero_The_Dark wrote:That could just be due to game limitations.
