Skill Cap at 95%?

Post by ishimori »

Hi everybody,

I have encountered the following problem:

After having raised two skills (the major Restoration skill and the miscellaneous running skill) to 100%, the other skills seem to be capped at 95% (in my case up to now the primary skill Destruction, the minor skills Alteration and Illusion).

Does anyone happen to know the reason and/or solution for this problem? I could not find anything about this in the Wiki.

Kind regards

Stefan

This is a feature of the game (perhaps one not intended by the developers though), explained here:
  • When you reach 100% in one of your primary, major or minor skills you will be declared a 'Master'of that skill. Once this happens, advancement in any other skill is halted at 95% as the game limits them to 5% below the mastered skill. This limitation can be overcome by creating an item to raise the mastered skill above 100%, which will allow the other skills to progress as normal.

Thank you very much for the prompt reply!

It seems that every subsequent raise of a primary, major or minor skill to 100% makes that skill a mastered skill, too. So, when I raised my Restoration skill to 115% with an enchanted item, and after that raised my Destruction skill to 100%, the remaining skills again got stuck at 95%, so I had to enchant and equip yet another item to raise Destruction to 115% in order to raise the next skill to 100%.

Apparently the game simply checks if there's a skill at exactly 100%, and if yes, it caps all other skills at 95%.

It might depend on the version of the game.

Playing the anthology version, I have no problems with skills capping, despite 5 skills currently being 100.

What kind of version is that, is it further updated compared to the v.213 patch?

It's from 'The Elder Scrolls Anthology', a relatively recent compilation of all the main games from Arena to Skyrim; since I haven't yet played Skyrim, I bought it and started replaying the whole lot. (Just got the last 4 main quest parts left to do now.)

Both Arena and Daggerfall came packaged with dosbox variations to install and run them without needing to fiddle with the settings. As far as I can tell, Daggerfall still claims to be v.213 (the dosbox setup won't let me check it, dropping stright back to my OS and I haven't bothered trying to change it), but it definitely has a few tweaks (like the compUSA extra quests) included.

On the other hand, none of the versions I've ever played seemed to have any 'cap at 95' - from the original CD to the free download from Bethesda - and this thread is the first time I've ever heard of a skill cap...

DOSBox probably uses the -exit command line parameter to automatically shut down once you quit the game. You can temporarily remove this parameter by editing the properties of the DOSBox shortcut or dosbox.conf (if it's in dosbox.conf).

Maybe this was something that got fixed in one of the patches?

It's been a few years since I last fiddled with dosbox; even to use Fixsave, I simply copied the saved games into my old daggerfall directory and ran fixsave from there and then copied them back again - the only bug I've had this time around was in the 'Dust of Restful Death' quest, when the dungeon didn't show up on B.Island.

Perhaps, but it would have been a very early patch, since my original CD version had no problem with this. It would be interesting to ask ishimori which version/patches he's using since it was his post in the first place!
