Redguard Runs Slow on Virtual PC

Post by Draulius »

I installed Redguard (For graphics, I chose Software, as Hardware Acceleration didn't let me start the game) on Microsoft Virtual PC 2007, with Windows 98 as the OS, and the amount of RAM to use as 512 MB. Before running the game, I set the resolution to 640x480 with 32 bit color. Once the game started (the intro ran fine), my FPS was so low that the game was virtually unplayable. My computer specs are more than enough to run this game, so why is it so slow and how do I fix this issue? I'm sure it has to do with the Virtual PC or the game itself but I'm not sure what. Everything else works okay though.

Long time since I used Microsoft´s vm,in vm ware player 3 (since that one allows you at least 8 cores/threads with some edits) there is some 3d support and it works for gui in your os but not much more I´m afraid, that leaves virtualbox from Oracle which have solved that, from the guide I tried with SciTech Display Doctor and everything was ok then, even started a game in w98se just to see, bearwindows driver was said to be unstable so I skipped that one.

Btw it is possible to run Redguard in dosbox in xp,skipped on vista and haven´t tried yet in 7,benefits to use dosbox you can adjust cpu speed some iirc.
Disclaimer: a bit rusty but the guide was a good one.

Actually it's kind of hard to run Redguard on da spot, because the game can crash because of DOS boxs core.
I would suggest trying to run red card on Windows 98 second edition Service Pack 2.1, it's an unofficial service pack but it should work. And then all you have to do is find an S3 type driver INI file for voodoo gfx cards.
