I've been thinking I was so clever every time I locked the door to my room when I went to sleep, but the latest time I woke up from being stabbed repeatedly I checked the door and IT WAS STILL LOCKED!
This makes me sad, does the lock spell serve any purpose except something to train alteration/security with?

I don't think so, apart from realism. Can NPCs get through your locked doors if they chase you?

The lock spell has saved my arse more then once. Some Daedra and Undead, and all NPC's can open doors... if you are getting beaten to a pulp by an enemy who is stronger then you, and you are far away from an exit, then closing a door and quickly locking it can make things much easier.
This is what I like to call the containment method.
As for being stabbed in the middle of the night, the Dark Brotherhood can sometimes spawn right on top of you... so the whole locked door thing doesn't always work out like you would hope. However, this isn't always the case, and sometimes they will spawn elsewhere in the area.

Ah, so it can work? I've tried that method, the NPCs always get through.
On a side note, whenever I open a chest I've locked myself, the game crashes.

To elaborate:
It sure is considerate of your 'friends' in wherever you're sleeping to wake you up when people run in wearing full black outfits and knives at the ready...
Some of them I can understand, wanting to avoid getting killed/tangled up in Dark Brotherhood stuff, but some types should be more willing to fight them (Fighters' Guild, Legion).

I know, when a House Dagoth cultist came and attacked me while I was sleeping in the Mages Guild, no one made a move. And I was Arch-Mage.

Pretty lacking in respect for leadership, eh? I see how it is, guys. >: \AddictedtoMorrowind wrote:I know, when a House Dagoth cultist came and attacked me while I was sleeping in the Mages Guild, no one made a move. And I was Arch-Mage.
