it's the "take" button but instead you hold it down. Like the green "A" on an xbox 360 controller.

Well, it does say right in the quote to "Hold the action key". Being the context sensitive button for take/open/steal/close.

Hold down "E" when you are pointing the cursor at an object like a tankard, skull, body, etc.
