Daggerfall "Small" Problem

Post by Pablo »

I know few people still play this game but I would be very grateful if anyone still cheking Daggerfall section knows how to solve this little affair.

Ok, I'm just doing some quests but, when I find a huge stair that my character cannot just walk over, I need to jump, but my vertical jump is VERY small (it just doesn't jump at all). I don't know how to fix it, and I cannot go further withouth a decent jump.

And I have some other problems. Running, spellcasting related actions and climbing does not appear to exist on my game. I tried to change the key for those actions, but they just doesn't seem to work. If I cannot climb, I cannot run and I cannot castl ANY spell, I'm losing a lot of this game. My Daggerfall is 2.13 and us running under WinXP B. I know it's hard to make it run under WinXP, but I just need to solve these problems to enjoy full Daggerfall. Hope anyone give me a response.

How about this?

Those stairs can be pretty tricky. But a good jump or two is usually enough to get 'unstuck'. Try 'wiggling' back and forth, turning around, or even Slide Left [Left Shift], Slide Right [Right Shift], or Slide [CTRL].

Have you tried to cast "Levitate" or do you have a magic item of "Venom Spitting"? I think that if you can use the Levitate spell then you would be able to get out of such jams.
And I have some other problems. Running, spellcasting related actions and climbing does not appear to exist on my game.
Sounds to me like this is related to an OS incompatibility (DOS support). I run Daggerfall under Windows 98SE or MSDOS. Never experienced the problems with running or spellcasting you describe. (Just a game crash, known bug, or minor glitch now and then.) Sometimes climbing fails to work at all, but that's usually when my climbing skill is low and I believe that's intentional. It usually works like a charm when the skill is over 50%.

On rare occations, when under the influence of a Levitate spell, I can't seem to use [PgUp] or [PgDn] to levitate up or down. But I can solve that by holding either the cursor left or right key down while pressing [PgUp] or [PgDn].

Perhaps you could try to go through the Main Menu in Daggerfall, click on the [Controls] button and then reconfigure the keyboard key you use for running ([P] by default) and/or spellcasting?

By "WinXP B" do you mean "Window XP DOSBOX"? I know a lot of people are having trouble getting it to run correctly through DOSBOX. Try updating/patching to the latest version of DOSBOX. Some say that fixes many problems. (Or, if that fails, try an earlier version!)

If you are still having problems, try the Daggerfall section of UESP Wiki. There's a section titled "Running Under DosBox" and another section titled "Running Under Windows." Very informative stuff.

I've heard that there is now an "XP Patch" to solve some of these problems. Where to download... I'm not sure.

Remakes on the way!

Post by bsperan »

Also, I recently learned that there are people who are actively writing remakes (or clones), with many vast improvements, that will run on modern Windows. I'm not aware of any projects that are finished yet, but I'm excited by what I read (and see) on forums[dot]dfworkshop[dot]net!
