TES & LOTR

Post by BillDAWG »

has anyone else noticed that TES & LOTR have a lot in common?

1. The imperial city is just a less evil version of Isengard
2. Morrowind, and Mordor both have giant volcanoes
3. Cloud Ruler Temple looks a lot like Helm's Deep
4. Gondor and Chorrol both have oak trees on their flag

that's all i can think of.

Not to mention that the Elven Shortsword is Hadhafang.
Plus, the Unfriendly Competition quest is fraught with references.

I'd have to say that of course Bethesda was influenced at least a little by one of the most well regarded and known fantasy books on the planet. Even if it was unintentional, there were sure to be subconscious references.

As for Unfriendly Competition, it's like a little Easter Egg in homage to the Lord of the Rings, just like the many other Easter Eggs in-game.

I don't know if I'd say they have a lot in common, but seeing as LOTR is one of the early fantasy pieces and that almost everything that has followed has been influenced by it, I don't think it's a bad thing that there are visible influences in TES (even though you -BillDAWG- aren't really saying it's a bad thing).

The Lord of the Rings was written after the invention of cars and airplanes.
Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.

Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

I'm aware of that, but it's still and early piece of work, along with the works of C.S. Lewis and other authors, when you look at the dramatic increase in similar novels in the current day.

Allmost all things you see in mordern fantasy, is borrowed from old folklore and mythology of different countries and centuries. Many things are just new interpretions or things thrown together from different old/ancient sources.

there is a person called Boromir in TES. You have to use the CS to find Boromir, who is a girl.

I agree with most of what Duraza said in his post.I've played D&D on the floor with friends and reference books etc, and can see allot of the same traits as ES. But the one thing that really brings how I percieve this fantasy realm is the images left behind from reading the Lord of the Rings 4 times and seeing the movie a countless number of times.

Oh yes, that's quite a lot.
Honestly, those are just some minor influences.

Duruza has really covered it. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis (IMO) are the fathers of this kind of fantasy genre. I think the creators of TES have done a fantastic job of creating a unique and imaginative world which encompasses elements of Middle Earth, Narnia, Archenland etc. Whilst maintaining a high level of originality. I believe any game, book, film etc. Of this type are unquestionably, in some way inspired by Mr Tolkien,
