help.....where is the fun...

Post by wayki »

hi all,

i am an old school gamer, and recently got hold of morrowind after a few years "off" games.

i sped up the speed and got thro the first 30 hours or so as a high elf / mage. in Balmora it got fun, and i did all the theives and mage quests.

now i am doing some of the blades quests in vevec (sp?) ....and it is starting to lack fun.

walking for ages, then Journal - need to find someone - then walk for ages - then find something in journal...etc....the journal has become a mess, and there are like 1 zillion names and locations floating in my head.

where has the fun gone? i ideally have the idea of being a wizard or high mage and taking down the empire as i hate authority, but all the game seems to be is journal entry - look - walk - find - bribe - new journal entry - repeat.

please renew my faith in this game.

respect, M

Its in the adventure good sir, traversing the unknown, exploring the mysteries of the strange world of morrowind. sure the directions are.. bad, but if you want to enjoy morrowind you will have to look past the negatives and embrace the positives.
The sad truth is, kids today will never know why pikachu is never inside a pokeball.

(Although the main quest gets a lot more interesting after the quest that you are doing. Lots of travelling though.)

Admittedly, yes, Morrowind can have a sense of boredom to it. specially after you have thoroughly played the game and done practically everything. And yes, though it is INCREDIBLY helpful at times, navigating past journal logs can be a pain in the butt. And when I first played the game for the (some two years ago) I found name memorization a real pain; I tended to rely on my journal for that bit.
Unfortunately I am not too entirely sure how I lost the boredom of the game and loved it enough to start a fan-fic. I guess what I did was play with the game so heavily glitched and with so many cheats, a passing fart of mine in all three of the god-kings direction at any given time would blow them away and turn them to a smoldering crisp. then, after I lost the fun of that, for it is a real blast at first, with your Attributes in the thousands and personal enchantments to always restore health, constant Sanctuary, and Command Creature 50 ft Constant Effect (then assault the Frostmoth Legion Fort with your pack of wolf buddies >=) always fun), I properly learned to appreciate the true depth and wonder of the game. And that came in part when I thought I knew everything there was to know about the game ahnd I found out just how little I knew when I started reading the wiki here on UESP.

Admittedly Morrowind is a slow paced game. My dad has expressed his deep want to blow his head off (<-joke) watching me or Azura slowly traipse across the landscape at a not-so break neck speed. And many times this can ruin the fun of the game. Especially how most of the quests are step-and-fetch, as one member Syn put it. It does give you a chance to familiarize yourself with the land, but a good ol' hack and slash every once in a while is good too.

I promise you that your love for the game will return. you are not the first to get bored with it. if you really do like the game and want to keep playing it, but can't get past the boredom, put the game down for a good month or so. Believe me, the return to playing it will be sweet. perhaps not as new feeling as you dd when you first played it, but if you are truly "hooked" on the game like me ansd so many others, the wait is definitely worth while.

or, if you are simply looking for something fun to do, to mix things up a bit, we have a few threads on that too. A few times before you other members ask us what we do for fun, and some a really worth doing. Such as doing a PermaSpell Command Creature, 50 ft, Constant Effect and casually strolling through Soltheim "collecting" wolves with which to storm Frostmoth with.
So if you are just looking for something fun and crazy to do, take a peep around. Or I can find you those threads and you can be entertained.

I've tried roleplaying, my characters always end up warping into guys who are seriously tired of walking everywhere and fetching things for everyone.

I'd suggest installing some overhaul type mods to improve the 'gameplay' element and mixing 'boring quests' with the more enjoyable ones. You could do one MQ quest, then a Great House one (Telvanni seems to suit you, as it's very wizardly and rather eccentric and interesting).

The thing to remember with Morrowind, is that the Guild quests start as very mundane and every-day (e.g. collecting herbs, clearing rats form a basement) and then become much more interesting (e.g. an arena fight to the death, discovering about the disappearance of the dwarves). I think that once you find some quests you really enjoy, try focus on them, but soldier through some of the low ranked ones, to get to the more interesting ones at higher levels.

Joining a Great House is the best part of the games for me. It's worth replaying the game at least three times (one for each), just to do their questlines. You might consider joining one (I'm working on an evaluation of the three w/comparison, but I haven't had much time for it, what with returning to school, busier than ever).

Great to hear Wayki!

On to your question: Yes, you can join both, but there will be occasional quest conflicts. Namely the second and final quest given to you by the Arch-Mage Trebonius (I won't spoil any more).

That being said, you don't need to do that quest, so there is no real problem joining both!
