So I'm returning to Daggerfall after something like a 10 year hiatus, and one thing I remember is that in order to reach the maximum level (31, was it?), you had to assign your skills carefully, and train them carefully. If I remember correctly, if one of your skills outpaced the others by too much, it would stunt your level advancement, and then you were done levelling. So, bad obviously.
So could someone please give me a refresher on this? Note that I don't mind not assigning any useful skills, I'm interested in levelling, and I don't mind if I have to struggle a little with swordfighting, for example. On the other hand, if it isn't going to be a huge hindrance in the levelling, it's nice to have a primary long blade skill.
Thanks in advance!

Re: Character build for maximum level
Well, I'm still getting used to Daggerfall also but from the guides I've read ...
Lockpicking is probably the first skill to avoid. Not only is it unnecessary if you have the open spell, but even with 100 skill you often fail. That aside, it's going to take a long time to level this one
Medical and running can increase levels just by travelling, so I would take those
The language ones, like daedra and impish ... You probably aren't going to run into enough daedra to level that one up the way you want. Orcs might actually get increased regularly but I think it's still a long shot
Pickpocket is a tossup. If you don't mind constantly hitting spacebar or whatever your use key is you can actually attempt to pickpocket monsters, leveling up this skill. Just don't do it near a town or the guards will come running, even if it's a monster you're attacking
I wouldn't think that long blade and dodge would kill your chances; they're probably the skills you would use most
