Which is Bigger Morrowind or Oblivion?

Post by Pantz Master »

I think Oblivion has larger land size but you seem to be able to go from place to place so much faster than in Morriwind. Like with my first character I didn't know about fast trave and I ran all the way to Weynon Priory in like 5 min. It seems like it would have taken a same level character about 10 min. to run the same distance in Morrowind.

Wow, so I wasn't the only one who didn't know about fast travel the first time around :D

I've never played Morrowind, but it's safe to assume that the newer games built for better systems offer larger areas and more places to travel than it's predecessors.

Morrowind's running speed is painfully slow. Oblivion's is much better.

In Morrowind, my character had about 250 Speed, in Oblivion, my character has 100 Speed. My Oblivion character seems faster.

I do believe you are faster in Oblivion. But I made a pretty fast Morrowind guy myself. 250 speed, how'd you do that?

Morrowind is Bigger, but oblivion is smaller but more refined.

Yes, I think Morrowind had more land mass to walk in, but I could be very wrong. I however, did know about fast travel right from the beginning so I don't usually walk anywhere, thus when I get a quest it takes forever to get someplace. :D

My morrowind character has occasionaly speed 5000 and he is "fast traveling" :) . he can also jump with 3 jumps from one side of island to the other. Too bad you can not riga a Guar though.

now then...

Morrowind (talking about game - land mass) is bigger than Oblivion.

Dagerfall is even bigger and is in fact the biggest one of them all. While Oblivion is probably the preetiest and definatelly the shinniest of them all...

But bethesda said :
Now, we do change scale in each game, because certain things you do cause the game to flow differently. Even though Morrowind is about 0.0001% the landmass of Daggerfall, the way you play it makes it feel even richer. Oblivion's landmass is larger than Morrowind's, but you can fast travel around much easier. It still has Morrowind's feel of open exploration, but Arena's feel of ease of travel and, well, it's more fun."
so maybe Oblivion is bigger, but i haven't noticed it. Still they said this in the beginning where they also said something about AI and it turned out not to be true at all ;) Because even at slow speed you are realtively fast from one side of map to the other. also if you have a look at the movie made in morrowind with "fog off" you will see how huget the whole thing is.

same guy also said:
there are tons of different bows and arrow types
tons = 11, inluding the black bow and fine steal and fine iron bow.

Anyone care to count the steps in both games from one side to the other? I dont' knowhow else would you measure it.

BTW oblivion also has a large part of land you can not actually go to but you can see it.

i also found this:
According to a Microsoft press release, Oblivion's game world is approximately 16 square miles (41 km2) in size.[26] Wilderness quests, ruins and random dungeons were added to fill the additional space.[22]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elder_Scrolls_4

So that woul dmean approximatelly something over 6km in length and width. with an average walking speed of 5 kph it would mean that form side to side you are supposed to walk an hour. and to run about 15-20 minutes. but usually you are much faster. hmmm....

If I'm not mistaken, and it's entirely possible that I am, but I read that Arena is the largest because it's technically infinite in size, as the land is randomly generated. This would mean the games have been progressively getting smaller, except Oblivion. I think I read Morrowind is 15 square miles, which isn't much difference. If you throw in Solsteim and Mournhold, they're probably about equal.

This thread confirmed my suspicions. I've finally received a Daggerfall copy today and I felt overwhelmed when I opened the map outside of the first dungeon and realized that every little dot was a dungeon, or a town, or at least, something! Yes, TES got smaller but way more developed and advanced. I am expecting TES: X to take place inside a canteen. (A very realistic one, with fast travel between corners and compass!)

It could be (i didnt' find the time yet for it), but...
The next Elder Scrolls series game—The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall—was published in 1996. Fueled by the modest success of Arena, Daggerfall was even more ambitious than its predecessor. Daggerfall attempted to create a game world twice the size of Great Britain, rendered in a truly 3D engine, and build a skill-system that revolved around skill building rather than experience gains. Daggerfall suffered from that very ambition: Daggerfall, rushed to publication, was found "tortuously buggy," and prohibitively hardware-intensive. In the opinion of one commentator, despite Daggerfall's commercial success, "the game still bears the mark of bad code"

the elite games by David Braben had billions of planets you could visit. Frontier was set in our galaxy and while there were a set number of potential ports of call, they were randomly generated and standard in format. Daggerfall would seem to tend towards this because 10-15 years ago that's what could be done well on a computer.

What we have now is a reduction in the number of places you can go to but a vast improvement of the graphical detail available in those locations available. The developers have made a trade off between looks and content. Since Oblivion is a huge game and still looks great, I would say tht they have done well.

So i am happy with the way they've taken the TES games. I'd imagine they'd improve AI and the ways you can interract with the game for the next one, and it will look a bit nicer than Oblivion but probably not as much as the difference between Mw and Ob. They will probably be able to increase the number of locations and the area of the game, but this isn't as important as how much a game allows you to do with what you have.

Final frontier does not seem to have standart format ports. Although they do look similar. Heh what can you expect the are in space.

maybe they will put the towns back in "the wilderness" like in Morrowind.

Yes, Daggerfall also has random generated landscape.

New tes will just need a bit more variety in landscape to make it look bigger. + i am tired of the woods already.

I am only guessing but i reckon Morrowind is WAYY more bigger than Oblivion. A lot of people have been telling me Oblivion is a shorter game than Morrowind, but that depends on side-quests, guilds, factions, great houses etc.

Oblivion may be bigger, maybe not.

Oblivion seems smaller since we have the fast travel system, but it may in fact be bigger than Morrowind, which didn't.

I remember someone telling me that Oblivion was smaller in square mileage than Morrowind (and Morrowind certainly seems bigger cos you do most of the travelling in real time).

But i have spent as much, or more time, playing Ob (must be 700 or 800 hours by now) as i played Mw so there must be as much to do in Cyrodiil. I think the idea of a smaller more resolved and detailed playing area like Ob means you spend less time wandering through wilderness and more time getting stuck into the interesting bits.

Which is good :)

no it might be because you are fast moving. and because you see where oyu are going. Just the other day i saw how close the towns in cyrodil actually are. Kvatch, Skingrad & Anvil for example.

also you can get to the other town quite fast by running. which doesn't happen in morrowind (where you seem to move slower in beginning as we discussed in one of the threads). Towns in Oblivion might also be bigger on the inside than they are when you look at them form the outside (from distance).

the only way to really find out where the landmass (landscape) is bigger is to make a fresh character one in Ob and one in Mw with same skill in athletics and speed attribute and then run from one side to the other measuring the time (perhaps with some invisibility spell on so they are not bugged by creatures on the way). Leyawin is a town quite distant down to the south. and maybe a race form there to Anvil should give some clue about how big the whole thing is.

I never played morrowind, but I am guessing it's located in the Morrowind region of the Map of Tamriel?

If so, this might help.

Yes, Mw is set on the islandy bit in the middle and Solstheim the smaller yellow island to the top left.

This map is in the style of ye olde fashioned map, so it is not very accurate. Cyrodiil isn't as fat in the middle when you compare this to the map that comes with the game, and it would take a character a lot longer to traverse the height of Vvardenfell (from the coast to the SouthWest of Vivec to the top coast, walking just to the West of the Ghostfence and ignoring cliff racers) than it would to walk from Anvil to Chorrol, even though these distances would appear similar on the map.

It's a difficult comparison to make however, since Vvardenfell is very mountainous and there's a lot of trudging up and down hill, whereas Cyrodiil seems to be relatively flat once you're in the bowl-like central area.

According to the map Cyrodiil is bigger than Morrowind, weird. I know where Mournhold is now!

I was thinking (but there is a problem here) that you could do an estimate on jump (problem is Oblivion doesn't have the Jump spell). How many 100pt jumps it takes to get over morrowind. And then estimate how many it would take for oblivion. I think from Vivec foreign to Balmora there are 2or 3 of such long jumps. If i estimate there would also be arround 2 to cross from land edge on the east to Skingrad. I did the estimate by standing on Crowhaven in a clear day. Where you can clearly see how close in fact Kvatch is to Anvil. And skingrad is about same distance to Kvatch.

you'd also have to bear in mind that the physics/mechanics of the games might be different.

Maybe 100 points in Mw is different to 100 points in Ob so the best we could hope for is a good guess

Surely game developers have said in an interview what's the larger one.

Maybe before Oblivion came out, in one of those preview interviews...

Anyone up for some internet diggin? =P
