It took me a while to get into; I remember that. And there were quite a few times when I'd skim over parts I found boring, characters I didn't know as well. Now that I'm on the 5th book and have seen the show, I'm going to go back and re-read it, now that I know who everyone is and can keep all these names straight in my head.

I've been watching it with a group of friends who have not read the books. It's been fun to see their reactions and speculations. I can't wait to see how they react to the RW at the end of this season. xD

All in favor of banning the use of this phrase? I've read the books, I watch the show. I've probably have heard or read that more times than I dare to consider.
YES. Oh my goodness, that gets so irritating. Even in the fifth book Jon keeps thinking about the phrase. xP

You know nothing, Jon Snow. Jaime's one of the best characters in the show.
I have not read all the books. But what I have seen (TV Show) to date, he is an incestuous dirt bag. He may 'redeem' himself later on....

Taking his hand was a start, I would have also taken his tongue........ or lopped off his head, which ever.

Tyrion is for sure my favorite character.
And oh my god, how I hate Catelyn, Sansa and Joffrey.
Spoiler:
Catelyn always find a way to mess with everything that's going right. Sansa I don't know why, but I can't read a chapter about her without stoping because of boredom. And Joffrey, well, you know.
I'm in the beginning to middle of the 3rd book when:
Spoiler:
The kingslayer is taken by Vargo Hoat after fighting with Brienne. It was an excelent chapter.

Yeah, everyone hates the mother who loves her children and always has her family's best interest at heart. That really is the sort of character one should hate. I mean, what's not to hate? Let's not forget how much she's had to go through, getting plucked out of her childhood home, and thrust into the bed of an unloving husband. Not important that said husband brought a [&@%!] home before their first child was even born. She's so stupid, I would never try to get my children back from the hands of my worst enemies. That's stupid man, and it ruins everyone's day. She should just face the fact that her loved daughters are both [&@%!] toast. And hey, her husband, who she had to learn to love over the course of many unhappy years, got beheaded by the same guys who are holding her children hostage. HILARIOUS, amirite?

I hate Catelyn so much, she's a complete [&@%!].

I didn't said it was because of those things that I hate her, it's because "Catelyn always find a way to mess with everything that's going right". I understand that her situation isn't good, but she didn't have the right to
Spoiler:
free Jaime from prison. Given the right time she would surely recover Sansa. The war was going good for Robb, at one time the Lannisters would have to make the trade, because Jaime is an important person to them. But them she freed him and take to risk to stay without both of them because she lend him to a woman she just met. This shows she wasn't trusting in her son at all, while clearly he had a very good chance of winning the war after Renly was killed. He even said to her he would get Sansa and Arya one way or another, he's a king with a lot of people helping him taking decisions, he probably had a better plan.

Spoiler:
No. This shows she was driven to the edge by despair. She couldn't handle the fact that Robb wouldn't do what was the natural thing to do for her. The war was going good? What would make the Lannisters leave Sansa and Arya unharmed if they were on the edge of defeat? Yeah right.

If they are losing the war then having Sansa and Arya alive would likely be the only thing that would keep from execution if they're captured by the Starks.

[Spoilers up to the end of ASoS + S3]
Spoiler:
I dislike Cat's character because, as a reader of a series like this one, she doesn't really fit. You have one chapter where heads are rolling on the floor and the next she's spending 5 pages reminiscing about life back at Riverrun and "oh my poor Bran." I was never excited for Cat's chapters because Cat was supremely boring. She observed only a few interesting events, them being the Red Wedding, her capturing Tyrion, and that's mostly it. So whenever I turned the page to see "Catelyn," of course I groaned because I knew I was in for a dull chapter.

We get some interesting character development in the TV series in Cat that didn't happen in the books, where she basically comes off as a monumental [&@%!] to Jon Snow. I don't recall the specifics, but she effectively wished Jon to die as a little kid. That's pretty damn cold, but couple that with the fact you have a perfectly good young boy, whom you're responsible of as well, and you make a complete effort to make them feel an outsider and make his life miserable. I am sure even if she was slightly less hostile to Jon, Jon would have a better place. Not a seat as a Stark, but a better seat than what he had.

^ everything mah homie here said.

I don't like Cat either. But "she messes everything up" isn't a basis for character hate. In fact, that's a good trait to have.

Well Kestral, you made the point I wasn't able to thanks to english not being my main language (it's hard to express your opinions in a foreign language you learned by yourself). Yeah, I forgot to mention the point about she hating Jon. She hates him as if Ned had him just for lolz, Ned was the most honorable man according to a lot of people, but no one is perfect. Even if he was a [&@%!] at least treat him as family. It's in the same level as the hate everyone in the Lannister family have towards Tyrion.
I don't like Cat either. But "she messes everything up" isn't a basis for character hate. In fact, that's a good trait to have.
Again, I have a hard time writing my opinions in english. I hope that now you understand my point. Hate is a strong word, let's say I just dislike her. Joffrey I do hate.

Being a perpetual screw-up ISN'T a "good trait to have". It can help the plot, in that it provides the author with a go-to character to drive conflict and keep stuff interesting, but the audience is perfectly justified in hating her for it, and after awhile, Cat screwing up started to feel like a lazy plot device. Like GRRM had no idea about how to keep Robb's subplot going and decided, to hell with it, I'll just phone it in with my latest "Cat Screw-Up of the Week". Nobody cares about these chapters anyway, right!

Honestly, I liked Joffrey a lot more than I liked Cat. Joffrey was at least amusing.

I'm not sure how you claim Cat was a go to screw up character. In my eyes she helped things as much as she messed them up. And in the end...
Spoiler:
Robb was the author of his own demise in combination with those that conspired against him.

When did she EVER do anything to help?

She was selfish, short-sighted, and emotionally frail. When she wasn't feeling sorry for herself, she was acting vindictive. When she wasn't acting vindictive, she was getting in the way. When she wasn't getting in the way...
Spoiler:
she was dead
and even THAT didn't stop her from being horrid and ruining things for everybody else.
Spoiler:
Thanks, Thoros of Myr! If Pod is dead, I'll burn my copy of Book Six
I can sympathize with just about every character in the books, to some degree or another. Jon, Robb, Arya, Tyrion, Jamie, Danny, Jorah, Tywin - hell, I even sympathize with Theon, and I'm almost willing to see Cersei's side of things. But Cat? No. Just, no.

But even if you don't agree with my assessment of her total uselessness as a character and as a human being, I think we can ALL agree that she was boring as buck-all. Boooorrrrriiiinnnggg, my God, it got to the point where I wanted to just skip over her chapters, or even stop reading altogether. I tell ya, it was totally worth
Spoiler:
Robb and Friends getting pwned by the Freys
JUST so she'd shut up. Of course that didn't work out either, did it, but at least it was nice while it lasted.

FINALLY got through the first book. Realizing I'm way behind most of everyone on this thread, let me just say that Dany's story turned out to be dark just like I thought from the beginning. She's gotten brutal fast but I guess she did go through a lot of bad crap. I really liked Drogo. :(

I gave the book a second chance and it turned out good...so I might read the second one. I prob won't watch the show just in case I continue reading. My only complaint is that all the characters turned out to be too predictable. Maybe its different in the other books.

Agreed, Catelyn is vindictive and I forced myself to read her sappy chapters. It really annoyed me when she told Jon that he should have been the one
Spoiler:
to have the fall instead of Bran
and it stuck with me throughout the book. I never forgave her for saying that lol.

Quick question: If I've watched all three seasons of the HBO mini series, would I gain anything in reading the first three books, or should I just start on the fourth?

Read all the books. I am not too familiar with the mini series I figure, but you'll be much mroe knowledgeable of the series if you read it.

And I hope everyone enjoyed tonight's/tomorrow's episode!

Quite frankly, my favorite house has always been House Frey. They are always being a big help, especially when they let Robb cross over on the Twins, and when:

Robb breaks his promise, Walder is just like "No probs bro, just come over and we'll have a [&@%!]' feast and I'll hook your uncle up with some fine ass." Legendary wedding, 10/10 would go to again.
