Hearthfire Steward
If I were to pay my steward to furnish the house rather than do it myself, does it give everything I could make myself? Does it give any extras?

No idea. I did everything myself. It was a pain. How do you even get a steward? T_TMoon_Struck wrote:If I were to pay my steward to furnish the house rather than do it myself, does it give everything I could make myself? Does it give any extras?
Signatures are overrated.

Re: Hearthfire Steward
I've built and furnished my own house five or six times... And I'm getting burned out on finding the ingredients and stuff.
But to get a steward you take a follower to your house. They should approach you and offer to take the job. If not you can speak to them and offer it to them. It must be done on your property though.
And I'm not sure if it was just for flavor or what, but you are advised to get to know your follower before allowing them to be your steward. It says something to the effect of leaving your estate to someone you don't trust is a bad idea. I haven't had anything happen, but that does make me curious as to whether or not your steward may betray you of steal or something. I cannot say I've noticed anything though.

It doesn't give you any extras, though you don't have a choice of customization-- it simply gives you everything for the room you choose. And you can't undo anything. This means that if you don't want every single animal head on the wall (or if there's any other options you don't want), you get them anyway.

That's what I thought, I just wanted to make sure if I choose to allow my steward to do it I don't miss out on anything. Oh, and it's also convenient because you don't have to gather all the materials yourself. Have fun!

Re: Hearthfire Steward
I briefly used Annekke as a Steward because I didn't know if there was a way to obtain the carriage, horse, cow and chickens without a Steward's help. After she took care of this stuff, I re-employed her as a Follower. Since then, I haven't been able to make her a Steward again. I don't know if this is a glitch or if stewardship is supposed to be a one-time-only deal, either per NPC or per HF property.
Slightly off-topic, but HF related: Are the Butter Churns glitched? Mine (Windstad kitchen) has never reset; I've only recieved Butter from it one time, when I originally built it.

Re: Hearthfire Steward
You should be able to make her a steward again by dismissing her from being an active follower. Once you do that, she'll tell you something like "I'll head back home" or whatever. Back out of the dialogue menu and then activate her again to talk to her, and she should have steward dialogue options.Evil-i wrote:I briefly used Annekke as a Steward because I didn't know if there was a way to obtain the carriage, horse, cow and chickens without a Steward's help. The annoying part is that the follower/steward dialogue cannot be seen at the same time- it's just one or the other. I've found myself dismissing them, talking to them, and re-hiring them so many times I can't count. =\
(If this doesn't work for you, I'd imagine it's bugged, in which case you *might* be able to use the

Re: Hearthfire Steward
The butter churns have only one use available far as I know. I looked it up and it seems like butter churns all over Skyrim were not reusable. Dumb, huh? So butter is like gold to my characters when they come across it.
Having a steward is nice because then the pc can go out and do more important things than purchasing building logs. They should go right back to being a steward after releasing them as a follower. Also, I was glad to see stewards can be replaced once they die. Poor Annekke was beheaded by bandits in front of my assassin's entire family. Felina was able to hire the housecarl as the new steward 5 mins later. With him and the bard as the only help in the house, there is more of a family feel now. Especially in mourning over Annekke's loss.

Just be sure you can live with your steward without strangling them. If I hear Sven say 'You look like a traveller!' to me one more time...

Re: Hearthfire Steward
Yes. Uthgerd the steward got permanently 'broken' for calling my Nord barbarian princess 'softgut' one too many times. Too bad there's no option for building a graveyard/cemetery/mausoleum on the Hearthfire properties. As annoying as she was, she at least deserves a decent memorial in honor of her several days (maybe even weeks, but I wasn't counting) of faithful service. Oh well. Faendal now serves honorably as steward of Windstad Manor.SilentPsycho wrote:Just be sure you can live with your steward without strangling them. Re: Hearthfire Steward
Thanks for the info on the butter churns and about re-employing stewards.
To be honest, I really don't see the purpose of keeping a Steward around once you've gotten everything you need from him or her. From what I've read, they just cause confusion by sleeping in beds that don't belong to them. And that problem seems to be compounded if you've built beds in the Main Hall and have built a furnished Bedroom wing as well, as counter-intuitive as that may seem.
As an aside, I'm pretty impressed with Valdimar, the Housecarl for Windstad. I've never seen him indoors. It seems he spends all his time outside, and he roams far and wide as he protects the property. I've learned not to bow-snipe NPCs I see in the distance when I'm around Windstad's property. It's probably just Valdimar patrolling the entire time zone.

Re: Hearthfire Steward
I'm not sure if you can fire stewards but its nice having them around. I like the idea of extended family for the pc that comes into Skyrim with nothing. Besides, there's plenty of beds and bedrolls for everyone.
Valdimar is pretty awesome and he uses magic. He's Felina's new steward so I'm curious if he'll actually come indoors now. She likes to walk to the hatchery in the mornings and say hello to Valdimar. The marsh is a dangerous place gotta keep safe.

Re: Hearthfire Steward
I wish that (aside from using the console) there was a way to revoke steward status, short of killing. I would very much like to allow Rayya to live, but she has failed to provide me with the services I require of my stewards. She allowed bandits to kill all three of my chickens, and after purchasing all the home upgrades from her except the hard she decided to remove the option to hire one. I wasn't going to, but my servants do not tell me what I can or cannot do!

Re: Hearthfire Steward
Apparently, there's some sort of bug with his AI package which includes an incorrect destination marker, so that's probably why he doesn't seem to come indoors.Evil-i wrote:As an aside, I'm pretty impressed with Valdimar, the Housecarl for Windstad. Re: Hearthfire Steward
Ah, so that explains it. Thanks, Alphabetface.
I've found Valdimar as far away as Labyrinthian! It's actually pretty cool, but, it also means that he's seldom around when bad things attack the homestead.

Re: Hearthfire Steward
I have a question thats been nagging at the back of my mind: can we hire a different steward? For example if I have Adelaisa as my steward but then want to have illia as my new steward for my home (I only have one and I'm old school so I build everything) does that fire Adelaisa and make her go back to Windhelm? Cause that would be great to not constantly hear "I'm glad Orthos finally found someone competant". Plus I'm a Ex-Legionairre, but hate havong another Ex-Legionairre in my house assuming that Adelaisa left the Legion for EEC to work as a PMC.

Re: Hearthfire Steward
As far as I can tell from what I've read, you can't "Dismiss" an NPC who's been made a Steward. When in Steward mode, they can only be converted to a Follower. As Followers, they will go back to being Stewards when dismissed.
It seems, however, that when a Steward dies, a new NPC can be hired as a Steward to take the former one's place.
Edit/Update: I'm sure many of you are aware of this, but it's new to me. A single Follower can be the Steward of two or even all three of Hearthfire's properties. Obviously, they can only assume their Steward role at one property at any given time, but no other Followers will take the stewardship of any of the vacant properties which have been imprinted on the other Steward, even when that Steward is employed somewhere else.
