I haven't played it personally, but doesn't Daggerfalll have some skills that allow you to learn different monsters language? Similar to the Beast Tongue power that Bosmer have? Learning Goblin or troll would be quite interesting. (Which could be just an ability.) I would have no objection if Khajiit or Argonian bandits spoke to each other in their native tongue, as long as you can learn it. (Meaning that it would be automatically translated in subtitles for you.) I suppose overall it's not a bad idea, it just depends on the execution.

Yeah I know you can turn off the floating markers but you are still left with the one on the compass. I want no quest markers at all, but directions from the NPCs to my next objective.Avron the S'wit wrote:I'm pretty sure you can turn off or disable quest markers, even keeping the HUD. Of course, like Br3ad said, you could always turn it off and go Morrowind style - blindly into the wilderness with only your compass and map! Ah, those days...

Yeah, that wouldn't work for bethesda. And I can understand why you'd want that, but bethesda also has to make the game playable for people who aren't into hardcore realism like that. I know more than enough people here, and in real life who would hate being stuck with nothing but NPC directions. And bethesda needs to make money, catering to smaller niche of gamers will only give them lower profits and make it harder for bethesda to break even on the cost of making the game in the first place.Moon_Struck wrote:Yeah I know you can turn off the floating markers but you are still left with the one on the compass. Personally, I find made-up fictional languages silly. Gibberish. I cringe whenever I hear some over-enthusiastic Star Trek fanboy prattle away in Klingonese.

This. I'd like some small tidbits of different cultures. I for example really like how Khajiit tend to speak in 3rd person so some kind of differences in talk patterns, slang etc would be nice. I don't mean that like... all Argonians would need to speak in a specific way since some of them are born and raised in whatever-province-we-are-playing-in but a native from Black Marsh could talk a bit differently in comparison to others.Chaos the N'wah wrote:As Moon struck was pointing towards it would be interesting to just add small snippets of the other languages (such as slang, insults, etc.)
Particularly with criminal activity, such as Khajiit dealing in the Skooma trade and using Ta'Agra to keep it on the down low
It would be a small, but give the community at large some subtle indication of the presence of such large and a small amount of race identity
Nothin' says "I want to find out what that means" like an insult in another language...

Yeah I wasn't really saying everyone should. And the game would still be totally playable without learning it. You'd just get a little extra sometimes if you did. Maybe that could be another perk of high speechcraft. As it increases you pick up on more of the language. Basically I just thought it could be used to give a few extra quests you can only stumble upon if you know the language, and as an alternate way to gather information for quests or extra background information on characters.

Well, there's a fine line between a relex of a language and a language, and TES doesn't have the latter. As far as I know, Klingon is considered a language. I do know there was a linguist who raised his son bilingual in Klingon and English...bit of a failed experiment, though.Evil-i wrote:Personally, I find made-up fictional languages silly. Gibberish. The TES series could introduce languages in their entirety, but let's make one thing clear: a language isn't just words with meanings. It goes much, much beyond that and, even if you just scrape the surface and create a basic few rules and maybe simple phonology, it's still going to require a bit more work than anyone wants to put into it. To get to the depth of an actual language would be quite a project in itself; but, given the bits and pieces we have of some TES race languages, it likely wouldn't be entirely impossible to sit down and lay down linguistic rules and systems.
But, honestly, I'd think it would be a huge headache, if it impeded on gameplay. Introducing it as an immersion factor, however, would be interesting.
Of course, Bethesda, if you're ever looking, you got a linguist right here...

If by TESVI you mean ESO, then it could copy how wow has the different races speak their own language. but presumably you mean singleplayer TES. and in that case I think the larger part should be in english, for it is a game. But different languages cold creep in in some places like they do in assassins creed for example. When you get a mission they'll say the important things in english and the mutter something in their own tongue perhaps. Small words like sera and s'wit gives an atmosphere. And if you rush into some one they could swear at you in their language. Also, maybe having two NPC talk to each other in their own language. I mean, as long as it's only unimportant things they might's well be in dunmeris, cyrodilic and nordic eh? gives that feeling imho.
Forever a fan of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and its expansions. Their glory hath yet to be surpassed!

I would love to hear the various languages spoken. NPCs talking to each other on the street, or small village communities where that's how they talk to each other - with subtitles for you when you're near them. But of course, when you speak to them, they just switch back to whichever language you understand (English, German, etc) so that you don't have to understand any of it but can just hear it. Just a cool immersion idea imo. :]
