How should the magic system be re-done in the next TES?
In Skyrim it looked pretty, but the magic itself was awful compared to oblivion. I think it was too underpowered, and I believe that in the next game you should be able to build your own spells. What do you guys think?
"Just remember," laughed the Emperor. "You Akaviri have a lot of showy moves, but if just one of our strikes comes through, it's all over for you."

Re: How should the magic system be re-done in the next TES?
Moving this to TES General, seeing as it's game related.
I think that a good mix of Oblivion and Skyrim would be fine.
I don't think it was underpowered at all, IMO a high-level mage was the strongest character you could possibly have.
However I think the number of spells needs to be inscreased, although this isn't something that would make or break the game for me. I'm more than happy to just wait and see.

Re: How should the magic system be re-done in the next TES?
I think it should Lean more towards Oblivions, however maybe be used the same way as in Skyrim
as in, Damage needs to increase, there NEEDS to be better, stronger spells, if we are stuck using the same spells with a tiny increase in Damage and with the only way to fight with these spells being Stun-Locking our enemies, something needs to change
I've always supported Oblivions system over Skyrims, i tried playing as a mage in Skyrim, but all the tougher spells just cost too much Magicka, and all the earlier spells never get strong enough. Especially when you play on Master

Re: How should the magic system be re-done in the next TES?
1. Bring back: Burden, feather, Levitate, water walking for spells and enchanting, locking and opening spells, disintergrating armour and weapons, damage/drain/absorb skiil spells, damage/drain/absorb attribute spells, silence, dispel, cure disease spell, fortify health/stamina/magicka spells, bound armour spells, seeing in the dark spells. There's probably more...
2. Casting like Skyrim's.
3. Spell creation is a must.
4. keep the current Health/magicka/stamina attribute system and the classless system rather than the old system.

I loved Casting in Skyrim. But we need spell creation again, and we NEED increased damage par with our current skill with the spell school.

This. I don't know if I absolutely need spell creation, but an option to combine effects needs to exist.CBR JGWRR wrote:1. Re: How should the magic system be re-done in the next TES?
I can agree with most of them. Things like that are what made magic really exciting in games like Oblivion and Morrowind (at least to me). I'm typically a warrior, but having to go up against mages with a wide plethora of things like that really does make it more interesting. Plus, feather was so damn useful - I can't believe it was even removed. (Although I guess they just want you to bring around the pack mule followers they threw in the game, but still...!)CBR JGWRR wrote:1. I want them to bring back spells from Morrowind (like the ones stated above) and Oblivion. I also really miss spell creation, and portable alchemy. The only thing from the Skyrim magic system is the casting system, nothing else. Oh! This is a little off topic but I would like to be able to use my staff for magic and melee fighting (going Gandalf!).

That's another thing - why can't staff enchanting be like weapon enchanting, only you have to know the spell already to put it on instead of an enchant. And not limiting spell type to staff type.
If I want to put Close Wounds on a destruction staff I should be able too. (they are the only sort I like the look of...)

Honestly they just need to stop taking spells out. They may even decide to take magic out at this rate.... As a pure mage most of the time I think they just need to stop streamlining every single thing and let us have a bulky muscle car if we want one....

Re: How should the magic system be re-done in the next TES?
Consistent damage scaling
- Enchants: both reduce cost and increased damage
- Scale with skill level, character level, and/or magicka (max) quantity
- Base effects (fire damage, fear, shield, etc.), delivery system (ranged, on touch, AoE, etc.), forms (Cloaks, 'flames', wall spells, etc.)
- Disintegrate made to reduce weapon damage/armor rating for a short time
Burden/Feather slow/speed up targets
Bound shield at the very least
Weakness spells returned
Silence returned
Dispel, reflects, resists, etc.
Absorbs, cures
- physical barriers, allow water to freeze, nature magic (summon spriggans from trees), etc.

I loathe Oblivion's system of various effects and spell creations and whatnot. I like Skyrim's better, and I'd like to see a more advanced version of that.

Bring back the cut spells, bring back spell creation. Magic in Skyrim isn't even magic, it is just a joke and a slap in the face from Bethesda. Put the magic back in magic, bring back spell creation.
Customization and endless role play options>Skyrim's Dark Messiah gimmick magic.

I like oblivion's number of effects and the ability to make spells, it is much better than set spells that you cannot expand on. Skyrim's system was not bad, it just was not as good in my opinion. I do like how skyrim handled that one hand can hold a spell thing rather than just having a cast button. So a mix of the two's good points would be best. And most importantly MORE effects and the ability to delete spells from your spell list.

I'm quite the opposite; I actually like the one-hand per spell system and the whole "set spell" thing.

I agree that the one hand per spell is good, but I also think that we need more effects and spell creation, or at least damage scaling.

Re: How should the magic system be re-done in the next TES?
I think we need more effects, but not as many as Oblivion. I honestly never used spells like burden, resist element/magic, cure poison, spell absorption or rally. When I first started Oblivion the range of spells and effect actually intimidated me and turned me off playing a mage so that may be why Bethesda changed the magic system.

Re: How should the magic system be re-done in the next TES?
We need them all back and spell creation. Just because this person or that person didnt use it, doesn't mean others didn't. There's nothing wrong with not getting everything out of your game, but it's no argument against those that did. Get rid of the gimmicks, put the magic back in magic and bring back our customization.
Magic is so bad in Skyrim, Xilver abandoned Midas Magic after only a couple of months. I'm still waiting for ES:V to come out. What I got was 2/3rds of an Elder Scrolls game.

Re: How should the magic system be re-done in the next TES?
I completely disagree. Playing a mage is much more fun for me than any class; and definitely better than playing in Oblivion. Tbh... if you want spell creation, go back to Oblivion. I feel like we got a whole Elder Scrolls game but you're just upset we can't make spells. . .which wasn't that great, really.Xarnac the Conqueror wrote:We need them all back and spell creation. Re: How should the magic system be re-done in the next TES?
I can agree with you on that. I personally was not that impressed with Skyrim's magic system either even though there were some good things about it. But I think we should make do with what we got. Truly all Bethesda needs to do for the next game is take aspects of the magic systems in III, IV, V and blend them together.Xarnac the Conqueror wrote:We need them all back and spell creation. But being able to make your own spells was something we had in TES III and IV there was no reason to take it out, it really was a way to make your spells work to your advantage. Such as the magicka requirements and how powerful the spell is.Witchery wrote:I completely disagree. Re: How should the magic system be re-done in the next TES?
Sorry, I just get everything out of my games and prefer more of everything over less and no customization (especially when it's been in every ES except Skyrim). Been using spell creation to personalize and further role playing since Arena, as have many many others, and there was no logical reason for them to get rid of it or neuter the effects list. You talk as if I don't still play Oblivion, Morrowind and Daggerfall for builds that are not even viable in Skyrim because of the cutting and dumbing down. It's not my fault magic builds get repetitive after only a few role plays (which never happened when you had spell creation). Successors are supposed to get better, not worse. A premise and series built on magic, that lost its foundation with Skyrim. A cornerstone mechanic that was removed and now magic is no different than it is in any other dime a dozen RPG series. Two Worlds has more magical customization than Skyrim... Yeah, Two Worlds...Witchery wrote:I completely disagree. Though it wasn't just the spell effects list that got neutered, Enchanting and Alchemy did as well.

Re: How should the magic system be re-done in the next TES?
I agree with everything xarnac said. Customizable spells were one of the best posts for me. I mean, seriously, it [&@%!] me off being level 46 and still having a spell that does 25 damage when my enemies do 40. Seems like bethesda wants to discourage mages, they made every mage a [censored] bag, and made the college of winterhold quests short. I think they should stop cutting good things out, and start adding on. And stop forcing people without xbox live to play the vanilla version for [&@%!] sake >:(

Re: How should the magic system be re-done in the next TES?
I like the dual casting. When I played a pure mage, it was very satisfying and made me feel more... powerful... even if I wasn't. >_> Though I think I'd be OK with a staff and single casting if I had to.
I never cared for creating my own spells in Morrowind/Oblivion. Nothing against it, I was just satisfied with what was available. That having been said, I wouldn't mind them bringing it back since so many people did like using it.
Out of all the spells cut, what I miss the most is Clannfear. May seem silly, but every time I played Morrowind/Oblivion, I had him conjured and following me around. He was my little buddy. I gave him a name (Charles) and a backstory. *sigh* I miss him. D;
