Greatest Sci-fi Franchise of ALL TIME
What do you think is the greatest science fiction franchise of all time? It can be any series (TV show, books, movies, games, etc.) you want. IMO nothing can touch Star Trek. The Star Trek franchise has spawned 6 television series, 12 movies, and hundreds of books/comic books. The Star Trek franchise is also one of the most influential franchises ever. Also it was revolutionary for its time (TOS started in 1966) with its stories and special effects. If it matters star trek was way before Star Wars, Planet of the Apes (by a few years), and Battlestar Battlestar Galactica.

Star Wars. The novels and the movies are just to cool.
Almost a quarter as cool as me, in fact.

Re: Greatest Sci-fi Franchise of ALL TIME
Nope, Star Wars doesn't even compare to Star Trek. Lucas even stated Star Trek was a major influence on him during the writing of A New Hope. The original Star Wars movies were great I'll admit but the prequels were terrible! (episode 3 was okay...). Star Wars' story is very basic and I think this is why a good part of their fans is kids. Star Trek has a very complex story line (movies and tv show) this explains why the majority of their fans are adults. Also I have to bring up The Clone Wars TV show as this is a part of the Star Wars franchise, this show doesn't even compare to the greatness of any of the Star Trek TV shows IMO.Skyrimplayer wrote:Star Wars. I'm not much into scifi (I've never seen one Star Wars movie), but Star Wars sounds more appealing in general. Don't know if I'm qualified, but I pick that.

Re: Greatest Sci-fi Franchise of ALL TIME
I'll put in a vote for Star Trek. Looking strictly at movies I would say that Star Wars was superior in quality. However, I haven't seen a sci-fi franchise that has managed to achieve the depth and complexity of the combined Star Trek television series. And giving respect to the previously mentioned Dune, the Dune books were more entertaining in my opinion than the Star Wars films.

The Greatest American Hero wins, hands down. Or hands 'flailing wildly about as one tries to fly through the air'.

I don't know. It is like asking me what my favourite film is, I honestly don't know how to answer that question.

Firefly or Babylon 5. Possibly Farscape or Space: 1999.
All are great Sci-Fi series even if one was...prematurely ended. Damn you fox! Why Firefly!?

I'm always going to be partial to Star Wars.
Not that I don't like Doctor Who or Star Trek. I just can't not adore Star Wars.
Except the prequels.
We're counting on you for a remake, Disney.

I've never been into Star Trek, despite close proximity to family who are, and while I like Star Wars, the prequels (and George Lucas) make me chaff
I like Firefly, Farscape, and Babylon 5, but I wouldn't consider myself an avid fan of any of them
So the yank's gotta say: Doctor Who

Re: Greatest Sci-fi Franchise of ALL TIME
easily star trek
i loved star wars, i grew up and my childhood was defined by Star Wars - but unless Disney makes something amazing with the final 3 episodes, Trek gets my vote - it has made the new movie which not only continues the original franchise faithfully, also makes a clean break no nerd can argue with and kick starts the adventure with energy and imagination. And lets not forget the awesomeness of nearly 3 decades of voyager, next gen and enterprise (i will give ds9 a mention but meh) and a load of movies which spanned all these tv shows
trek = consistent quality , perfect franchise material

Re: Greatest Sci-fi Franchise of ALL TIME
I have a few franchises I really, really adore. I wouldn't say I love them equally, but it's very hard to choose my 'favourite'.
Star Wars: while the movies aren't actually all that great because of the black & white morality, the cheesy dialogues and the sometimes annoying characters (you know who I am talking about), I love Star Wars because it offers a whole new world filled with thousands of species, races, planets, cities, languages,... That's why I hope Disney drops the Jedi - Sith crap and focuses on something completely different in the SW universe.
Firefly: this series is just awesome. A very original mix between western and sci-fi, funny dialogues, interesting story, ... Only problem is... it's too short! The series ends and you are left with a bunch of questions... Maybe the movie offers answers though, because I haven't seen it yet.
Mass Effect: The universe and races in this franchise are just so immersive and believable to me. I really hope more games will follow (maybe something else than 3rd person shooter/RPG? Imagine a Mass Effect spacesim, awwwww yeaaah).

Re: Greatest Sci-fi Franchise of ALL TIME
Doctor Who is exceptional and I rather love the whole history in that series, but Star Wars is captivating and intriguing. Star Trek was good, too, but Star Wars was a classic story that really captured the interests of everyone and shot into pop culture for that, which is part of the charm. Well, with the first three; I thought the "newer" episodes were less enjoyable.
But I'd rather have tea with the Doctor than Luke Skywalker.

How could I forget Mass Effect? I guess I was just kinda sticking to movies here.
If any Sci-Fi franchise gets close to Star Wars for me, it's definitely Mass Effect. A real close second for sure.

Re: Greatest Sci-fi Franchise of ALL TIME
Doctor Who is better than Star Wars and Star Trek. The 8th doctor is my favourite, followed closely by 11th (Almost like that is why I named the doctors in Vault 54 Paul McGann and Matt Smith) and then 10th. Hope they bring Paul McGann back for the 50th anniversary.
Torchwood is a great spinoff by the way. I like it as much as Doctor Who. Can't have too much Jack.

Re: Greatest Sci-fi Franchise of ALL TIME
I'm a fan of Star Wars, obviously, and I'm also a fan of Stargate, Farscape, Doctor Who, Firefly, and Babylon 5. Despite my Jedi status, however, I must put my vote in for Star Trek. I would suspect that most people who sneer at Trek have never really watched it. And by it, I mean all 30 seasons of TV and all 11 movies(12 this year). Beyond that, you've got a deep seated pop culture phenomenon that's influenced science, technology, and politics, as well(what other franchise has made such a fan out of a head of state[Abdullah II of Jordan] that he insisted on being a guest star?).
Also, I liked the Star Wars prequels, at least as much as the originals. *activate flameshield*

Re: Greatest Sci-fi Franchise of ALL TIME
In all seriousness, I will have to give a shout out to The Terminator as intimate examination of the human condition placed under dire circumstances. It's a story of survival, and there is only one thing that truly survives time and fire— family. The story isn't about time-traveling robots. It's about keeping the family together.
