Hope Falls, Maine is a small town known for its hospitality and beautiful scenic landscape. At any given time there are between ten and fifty “out-of-towners” visiting for various reasons. Today is like any other day in the sleepy little town; people are waking up and going to work, visitors are enjoying the brisk autumn day, and somewhere a mystery is waiting to be solved.
What are you willing to do, to give up, to make things right? Will you be in time? Will you save the day? What exactly is going on in Hope Falls? Are you ready to find out?
Mechanics
This is free form, meaning there is no linear path to follow to solve the story. You can go anywhere, do anything (within reason), and either try to help, or just relax. Whatever you want to do you can. Multiple objectives exist but will not be pointed out by the DM. It is up to you to try and discover them. There is a Main Quest that will change the game (and perhaps end it) if it is completed.
Everything works like you would think it would. All NPCs will be controlled by the DM, but objects can be manipulated by PCs in a realistic way. A map will be provided as well as a time schedule for when stores and other businesses are open. You can enter and exit buildings as long as they are open. If you have a car you can drive it. If you have money you can spend it. Want to chuck a rock through the window of City Hall? You can do it, but not without consequences.
There is no set limit of characters, and I plan on allowing this to be "drop-in/drop-out", meaning you can join or quit any time you want.
Hunger
Hope Falls is Hardcore Mode, meaning your character needs to eat, drink and sleep every day to be of any use to you.
Hunger is level based and determines how effectively your character can perform tasks. There are levels that will be posted as you reach them.
No Hunger - You have eaten today. You will be as successful as possible in tasks you perform.
Minimal Hunger - You have not eaten in one day. You are 20% less likely to be successful in tasks you perform.
Moderate Hunger - You have not eaten in two days. You are 40% less likely to be successful in tasks you perform.
Substantial Hunger - You have not eaten in three days. You are 60% less likely to be successful in tasks you perform.
Terrible Hunger - You have not eaten in four days. You are 80% less likely to be successful in tasks you perform.
Starving - You have not eaten in five days. You will be unsuccessful in anything you attempt.
Dead - You have not eaten in six days. You are unsuccessful at living.
Eating a meal will bring you up two levels, so if you are Starving and you eat, you will have Substantial Hunger.
There are no dice rolls for success, just however I think you will perform based on your character and how you describe what your character does. For example:
Would probably be unsuccessful.Sally wrote:Sally walked up to the man at the counter, put the broken gizmo down and said, "Give me a refund."
Would have a much higher chance of being successful.Sally wrote:Sally approached the counter slowly. She gave a forlorn look to the man behind the counter as she placed the gizmo in front of him. "I don't know what happened," she lied to the man. "I was using it to purée some strawberries and it just broke. Is there anything I can do to return it or exchange it?"
Bangor, ME is the closest big city at about 1.5 hours away from Hope Falls. You can travel there if you would like. Heck, you can travel anywhere you want to, really. This is Freeform and open world, so go nuts. Just know that the DM is a benevolent troll and the genre of this RP is still [&@%!].
A note on dropping in: If the RP starts without you, PM me about joining.
A note on dropping out: If you need to drop out for any reason, just let me know. Character drop-outs will be permanent, meaning if you drop out with one character you won't be able to come back later with the same character. You can put your character in derpy robot mode (copyright Nanzapants 2012) if you will be gone a couple weeks or less. Your character will be on auto-pilot and be ready for you when you come back to the RP.
