Best city in Oblivion?

Post by bas237 »

There had been a post about this some time ago, but posting in it would be necro-posting, so I just started a new topic.

What, do you think, is the best city in Oblivion? Where do you spend the most time? What cities' design do you like the most?

I'm curious if anyone will vote for Kvatch ;)

I like Skingrad and Cheydinhal, but I think I like Cheydinhal's design a bit more.

Anvil... (some spoilers)

Right when you enter the gate, the Mage and Fighters guild are right there! This is reason enough to put it on my favorite list. Convenience while you're going through these questlines.

The businesses are all in one little strip along the docks...very convenient. (with the exception of the weaponsmith and the Counts Arms Inn)

In addition, it's got one of the cheapest, easiest to get to, (and nicest) houses in the game, and the secret passage is damn cool. You can even own the two boats in the harbor! (and get a nice sword starting out to boot).

Anvil served as my HQ for quite some time (until I got Rosethorn Hall). The lighthouse is cool, as is the dock area (and the general shop), and it's a great place to train with mudcrabs. Not to mention, I'll credit my early success to a helm (Fingleam) found just offshore on a skeleton in the depths...

The area under the castle is neat too...plenty of areas in Anvil to hide out from the daylight for us Vamps... :Twisted Evil:

It also serves as one of the easiest places to first get some guard chainmail (i.e. off of the two undercover guards of the Sirens quest)

First time you get to see the Gray Fox unmasked...

Where you get your final slap on Mr. Lex, hehe... :D

Maiq the Liar!

Dunbarrow Cave...become a Pirate!

*******************************

Things I like about other cities:

Skingrad: Well, it's home, and my house is right inside the gate. Perfect place for a vampire to live.

Leyawiin: The only thing nice about it is the freebie house just outside the city (Grayland).

Bravil: The funnest place to practice your acrobatics (jumping from roof to roof).

Bruma: Neat Nordic architecture, again fun to roof jump, and one of the easiest city layouts to learn. Plus, my favorite reliable fence lives there.

Cheydinhal: If it weren't for DB business, I'd never go there...all those little bridges makes getting around confusing, and you do a lot of walking. Can buy black horses here though.

Chorrol: Besides quests, have no reason to ever go there.

IC: Love the waterfront district...most of the Thieves Guild quests, crappy, but effective hideout (good when you're a Vampire and have a bounty on you), and can't beat the services. Other than quests and the occassional shopping trip, I stay out of the rest of the city...guess I still resent the whole Prisoner thing....

Either anvil or bruma. Anvil seems most fun, and a place where i would enjoy to live. Bruma seems fun cause thats where all the badass nords are. Just seems a bit cold for ol leroy.

I like the design of cheydinhal, but it's pretty useless. Skingrad has Rosethorn Hall, which I visit often, bringing back stashes of loot. And there's the fighter's guild, mage's guild, and shops right down the street!

Kvatch all the way. The citizens there have at least seen a decent fight. It's location on top of the hill is also great.

Anvil takes my vote because the landscape is cool, and because it's by the sea. Kvatch would be my favourite if it wasn't a hefty pile of rubble. Anyway, my vote for Anvil is closely followed by Cheydinhal. It's architecture is cool and the little river running through the middle is nice. Then comes the great big Imperial City, just because of it's size, the fact it houses the Arena, the Imperial City Market District, and my favourite tavern, the Merchant's Inn. After that, Bruma, because of the view, and because Cloud Ruler Temple, which has an even better view, is right behind it. Then Chorrol, because I love the house there (Arborwatch). Then Skingrad, because of the tomato and grape farms on the borders, which means big-time alchemy skilling. Plus theres that big, overrated house called Rosethorn :) . Then Bravil, because one of my favourite stores, the Archer's Paradox is there, and the architecture is... different. Then the hole of Cyrodiil, Leyawiin. Who actually likes this place? It's always rainy, and full of Khajiit. I hate khajiit  . Argonians over Khajiit any day.

Well, thats about every city in the game.

I stick with the Imperial City. I love the design of Skingrad, the cold but cozzy houses in Bruma and the medieval-city Chorrol, but nothing beats the tons of services you can get in the IC.

It's the only city with an arena, the only city with a market district, it has many different districts, many stores, the waterfront is better than the harbour in anvil and best off all: the palace. You can see the tower from everywhere in the world, making you understand that you really are in Cyrodiil, that you can explore every part of it..

What I like about other cities:
Skingrad: It's in the forest and perfect for Elvish characters.
Chorrol: It's the most medieval look-a-like city in Cyrodiil.
Cheydinhal: Two words: Dark Brotherhood.
Bravil: I like the stash and the argonians/khajiits walking around.
Bruma: Cozzy, nice roof-jumping, nice palace, nice player-owned house... do I have to say more?
Leyawiin: Ehm, Blackwood is looking cool? Leyawiin itselves just sucks. Well, in vanilla Oblivion, because with the 'Better Cities' mod it is quite ok.
Anvil: Nice player-owned house and harbour. Never spent much time here, though.
Kvatch: Great for evil players. No player-owned house :(

I chose cheydinhal but my second would be kvatch. Kvatch reminds of that big war scene at the end of the lord of the rings - the 2 towers. Where their in the castle fighting the urikai. I could imagine kvatch's destruction starting like how it did in LOTR 2

I'm a pretty big fan of Sutch. It's got a nice atmosphere, and the layout of the town is.. well, I can't even describe what it looks like. That's how awesome it is.
As for towns that exist, it's hard for me to pick. I usually live in a different city depending on my character (I always RP). My current Ob. character is a sorcerer type who dabbles in conjuration and necromancy, so he naturally resides in Anvil (perfect evil mage house). Skingrad has the coolest architecture, and it's ruled over by a vampire. Chorol has the nicest people in the entire game. I mean, one is so friendly she stalks you until you say either hello or screw off. Imperial City is large, has everything you'll ever need, as well as plenty of dungeon crawling without ever even leaving the city (sewers). Cheydinhall has nice architecture, HQ of the DB, and uh.. well that's it I guess. Bravil is old, dank, has nothing interesting besides a certain statue and skooma den. Leyawiin I despise, mostly because of people like the countness and Ahdarji.. I never go there unless I specifically have to, which usually leads to none of the side quests getting done. Kvatch is all on fire and stuff, but otherwise it's a nice place. Perfect for Dunmer, since they're fire immune. Bruma is good if you're a Nord; otherwise it sucks. The FG is useless, all of the MG people are snobs, and there's nothing else of interest besides the first TG fence. So uh, besides the ones I pointed out that completely suck, I'd say the rest tie for cool.

Chorrol will always hold a special place in my heart cos it was the first town I ever visited with my first char{que audience: awwww}. Also Anvil has a special meaning to me as it was where I had my first house and also Varel Morvayne (the best merchant in Ob) lives there.
I hate IC and Leyawiin. I hate IC mainly because I was expecting something glorious but in the end it looked pretty sh*t when I eventually saw it. I also held up going there as I wanted to visit ever other town first and then go to IC but when I got there I wasn't too impressed :( .
Then I hate Leyawiin because once again I was expecting a cool lookin place. I mean even the name "Leyawiin" has a real sort of mighty fell to it and even sounds Elvish to a degree (LOTR version of Elvish) but once again I wasnt too impressed :( .
I have never "lived" as such in the other towns buy I supppose they are kinda cool. Skingrad has a kinda unique feel to it so I suppose that would be really up there aswell.

I agree with Guy No. 2, (Guy No. 1 sorry, but your arguements were just too harsh).

I was kinda hoping IC would be more grandure...ful. And Leyawiin looks like a run-down neighborhood in Rio where they painted the houses different colors to make it more interesting and not offensive to tourists.

The only city that I've ever really got the connotation of a home was Skingrad. However, Cheydinhal, Chorrol and Bruma are also very beautiful cities that I wouldn't mind "living" in. Bravil is desolate, Kvatch is ruined, Imperial City is a bore and I just plain don't like Anvil. Skingrad itself ins't that pleasent until you get rid of that raving lunatic Glarthir.

This is exactly the reason why I got the Portable Campsite mod, now everytime it gets dark, I run away to my home of Valenwood and start a camp.

Bruma wouldn't be so bad if I could just get the fireplace in my home going. :x

Bravil has a certain charm about it in the middle of the night. Lamps burning quietly, residents calmly milling about, and the Black Hand performing long-lost ceremonies in the middle of the square... daytime, on the other hand– a good razing should improve the looks of the place.

Anvil reminds me of home. Literally. Seaside locale, Mediterranean clime. All that's needed are palms, paparazzi, and smog.

Cheydinhal gives me the impression of New Orleans' French Quarter, which is nice if you're ever in an Anne Rice kind of mood.
Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.

Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

I like chorrol for it's house. IC is pretty nice, just because of it's convenience, but the city isn't really beautiful. I like the look to it, but its not that oooooooohhhhh.

Leyawin has nice architecture and the houses are colored sweet. Bruma and Bravil have good house jumping. Bruma is really nice to because it's so packed together, but neat, tidy and good looking at the same time.

I like Anvil cause of the sea. The house to buy is pretty sucky, and some of the houses don't look to nice, but the locale and layout of the city are good looking. Not to mention the guilds are right at the gate.

You really sound like you know what you're talking about. I agree, Bravil does need a good razing (Here Dagon! Go get your large battering ram-thing and play with Bravil... *Godzilla*)

I was pretty mean to Anvil, though. I do like Anvil a lot. It's just that after I knew there was a secret hole in the wall where a supposedly dead man with bones around him lives I kinda got a little freaked out and may have... um.. *clears thought*... Let's just say the guards there don't agree with-um....... We're not on good terms.

Anyway, I do agree with your description of Cheydinhal. Does New Orleans have an underground guild of assassins that believe that a green ghost gave birth to them after a cold dark night?

IC, you can't beat the overall selection of things to do..... you can buy a house, use the numerous shops or go on a giant killing spree. Not to mention thieves guild and arena. Skingrad next, the guards are too fun to kill.
