What would you change about Oblivion's main quest?
Just like the one for Skyrim, what would you change about the main quest? Also, I suspect Bradmax may shoot an arrow into somewhere extremely painful if i end up making him despise the writers.
And there will be spoilers as well as the odd mudcrab. I'll write what i'll change later.

Make the final battle between Martin (as the avatar of Akatosh) and Mehrunes dagon a LOT more epic.

Re: What would you change about Oblivion's main quest?
I would change almost the entire main quest so that we are not a glorified errand boy that is only capable of saying city name and rumours.
The final battle.
You and Martin along with Jauffre and most of the Blades travel to the IC. The citzens start talking about Martin and wonder is he the new Emperor and will he save us all? You see a MD assassain move towards him but is killed by a IC guard. The rest of the journey to thingy is trouble free. Inside, the Elder Council greets Martin and greets you as well, they offer to make you his bodyguard which you can agree to or disagree. Martin makes a speech about him becoming Emperor and that he feels he may end up being a poor one. You convince him that he will be an excellent one and that men followed him in battle and would be honoured to give their lives for him. Whilst this is going on, you see the blades go out with a guard due to something strange happening outside. You interrupt everyone and say"Martin, we need you to relight the dragonfires now as i've got a feeling that the Mythic Dawn or what's left of them are about to invade the city". Some councilors dismiss it due to them believing that they wouldn't dare and that you destroyed them. Whilst others agree with you.
There is a massive shockwave that shakes the entire building and the Daedra come pouring in through the door. "DEFEND MARTIN AT ALL COSTS" you shout to the men and ask how do we relight the fires? The arch councillor(can't remeber his name) says, we need to get him to the temple of the one. Martin replies i won't stand by and let my people die. He wields his sword and procceeds to attack a few Daedra. You end up killing the rest inside the chamber and tell him" Getting you to the temple is more important then you leading the men into battle against the daedra, just run, I'll keep them off you as well as the blades if they are still alive" Martin replies"No, i refuse to let the citzens of the IC die when i can help to defend it" You reply" And you will by relighting the fires, you know that and i know that. I know what you are feeling at the moment, and i would want to attack the Daedra as well if i was in your position but i will get you to the temple, just leave the fighting to me and if i say run or leave me just do it, i don't care if i die as long as you save Tamerial." Martin replies"I won't abandon a friend" You both exit the palace and see a lot of battles going on. The sky is red and gates are opening everywhere. Everyone is fighting the Daedra. You both find a few blades who help you to defend martin.
You make it to the Temple district but you feel the ground shaking, Dagon appears, he takes out an entire team of guards. He begins to wipe the floor with the legion and with the Daedra on your tail, you decide to buy Martin some time. Him and Either Jauffre or Barrus go with Martin or the arch councillor. You fight the daedra for a few minutes before you dodge Dagon's foot. You yell" FACE ME PRINCE OF DESTRUCTION!, I AM THE NINE'S CHAMPION AND YOU WILL NOT SUCCEED". Dagon replies "So you are the mortal that destroyed the mythic dawn. I was going to kill them myself after this but you saved me the trouble, however closing my gates is both impressive and annoying. I will trap your soul and torture you from now untill the end of time. You think that relighting the fires will save you? Ha, I am here, in the Imperial City, the walls are beyond repair and Martin will fail. It must break your heart to know that everything you have done is for nothing. But if you think you can take on me, you are a fool and i will enjoying crushing you."
You and Dagon fight. He has a variety of moves. He swipes with all 4 arms with his daggers which will inflict fire damage and throw you back. He kicks and if you are hit by it, thrown backwards and disoriented for a few seconds. Can shoot fireballs from his mouth as well as summoning pillars of fire. Either once you've are at 10% health or done 1000 thousand damage in total. You realise that you can't defeat him and get kicked throw the wall into the temple which destroys any and all equipped items barring Daedric artifacts. Martin notices you and runs to your side. You weakly say"It...It is useless, relighting the fires won't do anything" Martin replies "I know but there is a way out of this, the amulet of Kings holds Akatosh's power and can be used to summon him, at a great cost" Just as he says that, Dagon rips the roof off and says "So this is the famed Martin Septim, The dragonborn, Akatosh has failed and i may keep you alive as my personal slave" Martin says " You overlooked one thing, I was blessed with the soul of a dragon by Akatosh and with my soul, i can summon Akatosh, goodbye old friend(he looks to you when he says the friend" He break the amulet and rises. It is more destructive and Dagon is blinded by the summoning. Akatosh appears. As a massive gold dragon made out of fire and have strange things imbuded in his wings and skin.
Dagon exclaims "AKATOSH!?" "So you've come to Mundus to defeat me. Huh, always thought your lot were cowards but you are living proof that you will intefer." Akatosh says nothing but roars, he attacks Dagon in an aggressive manner, Dagon barely gets in a few strikes. Dagon is knocked onto his back which destroys a lot of building, he growls" I WON'T BE DEFEATED" He jumps onto Akatosh and stabs him furiously, Akatosh tries to shake him off but fails to so instead he uses a power to blast him off and flies straight him(That power is revealed to be the Thu'um in Skyrim via a book), Dagon strikes at him just as Akatosh's strikes him. Akatosh is wounded but Dagon explodes and takes the Daedra with him. Every gate is destroyed. Akatosh limps back to the temple and turns to stone. You hear Martin's voice in your head(thus starting the end cutscene).
A few weeks later, a cermony is held for you and you are offically declared the champion of Cyrodill. You have the Dragonblood armour(can't rember what it's called) It fortifies your health and bandits will run away in terror when you encounter them on the road. A statue is built near the wall that you was thrown through which depicts you fighting with Dagon. Guards will look the other way once when you commit a crime and you may get a discount at certain shops. The Arena askes if you would take part in a special event which would basically be an infinite amount of fights against animals and people who want to test their skill against you.(Can earn up to 600-1000 per fight). If you are the grand champion, you recieve more gold per fight as well as Owen bragging that the Arena helped to shape you into the man/woman you are now.
The Blades ask you if you want to still be a part or want to join? You can refuse. You may get invited to dinner with a count(Role playing reasons) etc..
A year later, you kneel down at the statue of Akatosh and honour Martin's sacrifice. Oh and you can purchase one of the bigger houses as well after the final battle. It takes roughly 6-14 months for the IC to be rebuilt as well as Kvatch finally being rebuilt.

Re: What would you change about Oblivion's main quest?
I have some gripes about the lack of "epicness" in the Oblivion MQ (particularly compared to Morrowind), but I don't think I would change anything, obviously. The main quest in Oblivion isn't really about you: it's about Martin. You are just a piece of the puzzle, and an important piece, but the story is more about your relationship with Martin and your struggle to hold back the Daedra than it is about you being a stunning, divine, and heroic being. You are those things...it's just a different type of hero. And I find it really charming in retrospect.
But that's just me. I do wish there was more emotion toward the end, though. It does feel a little...empty.

I agree. I like how this time through it's Martin who is the real hero. Granted you do all the heavy lifting but it makes a welcome change from all the games making you the prophesised hero.Avron the S'wit wrote:I have some gripes about the lack of "epicness" in the Oblivion MQ (particularly compared to Morrowind), but I don't think I would change anything, obviously. that really really irritates me ... when people say your character isnt important
in Oblivion, you are just as important as martin, unlike the other games, there are 2 Prophesised chosen ones (you and Martin) ... and my opinion ... I LOVED IT !!!
i am so sick of being ''the'' chosen one in these games ,it was good to ''a'' chosen one for once

Re: What would you change about Oblivion's main quest?
Needs to be expanded more with a bit more Story line and better features. I found the stoyline to be a little flat and plain. it needs to be more fluid kinda like Assassins Creed 2 and 3. The story line in that game was great. Oblivion IV is a good game to play, but the story line is flat and you get bored of it after a while. If you compare both Oblivion IV to Assassin Creed 2 and 3. It gives your mind a better idea on what would make OBlivion IV better in the Main Quest.

Re: What would you change about Oblivion's main quest?
Oh, I agree! I don't think the Oblivion player character is less important than Martin - you are needed for him to ascend to his destiny. But the MQ is definitely more of a story about the end of the Septims and the Champion alongside them, than just the Champion themselves. A complaint I do have, as I mentioned, is the lack of emotion in this regard at the end. Ocato really just dismisses you and the whole completion of the quest just feels lackluster afterwards, as if nothing really happened, and that's a bit bothersome - but good work for the imagination!philfredobob wrote:Avron the S'wit wrote:I have some gripes about the lack of "epicness" in the Oblivion MQ (particularly compared to Morrowind), but I don't think I would change anything, obviously. All the quests have far reaching effects, though, even your efforts as the hero in Morrowind, as you find out when reading the Keyes book or playing into Skyrim, and I think that's rather nice itself.

I would do what I always do: give more air around it. More freelancer type possibilities, instead of strictly binding it around missions and ideas bound with a fixed idea of how to do it. Go from mission X to Y, in your own pace, or from K to O... "Freedom for the fighter", that is.

Definitely this. More quests where Martin accompanies you would've been cool as well. I feel like you didn't do enough with the guy to get to really know him.Mr.Argonian wrote:Make the Oblivion Gates actually interesting and not generic copies.

Re: What would you change about Oblivion's main quest?
1) Less fast-travelling. It's stupid that you can fast-travel from outside the sewers to Weynon Priory, then to Kvatch, then back to Weynon Priory, then to Cloud Ruler Temple. I think you should be forced to travel with Martin and/or Martin and Jauffre for some of the distance, so your character actually gets to know them. There could be a couple of scripted attacks by the Mythic Dawn and/or Daedra along the way.
2) Oblivion also needs a "Give Martin a Nice Cup of Tea" or "Give Martin a Friendly Hug" action, because he desperately needs some kind of comfort! I'm not obsessed with Martin... honest (she says, kicking her NaNoWriMo novel under the desk - nothing to see here *whistles*). I just spend the entire Main Quest feeling ridiculously sorry for him. The poor boy needs a nice cup of tea and a cuddle!
3) I think it would be epic if Martin went insane as a result of reading the Mysterium Xarxes, and then you had to rescue his soul from... somewhere. Or perhaps he gets trapped in a weird prophetic dream and you have to rescue him from that, like the Henantier quest. Something where you prove your loyalty to him and he actually gets to do something other than sitting in Cloud Ruler Temple reading. And something a bit different from Just Another Bloody Oblivion Gate (TM).
4) I'm assuming that this entire thread contains spoilers, and anyone who reads this already knows how the Main Quest ends.
With that having been said, I want it so Martin doesn't die at the end. I don't care if it's a "tragic and noble sacrifice". The poor sod has no bloody life once he discovers he's the last Septim. All he gets to do is sit in Cloud Ruler Temple reading and being emo. He deserves to actually get to be Emperor. The closest he gets is the Battle of Bruma, which makes no sense anyway because how could a priest and ex-mage know how to fight that well with a sword in heavy armour? Grumble.
Although I read Thelastdovah's idea, and like it better than the game version: apart from the fact that in your version, it's Martin's fault that Mehrunes Dagon gets into Mundus - because he faffs about defending the player character instead of going straight to the Temple to relight the Dragonfires. I really don't like that.

Re: What would you change about Oblivion's main quest?
The Adoring (Read as Annoying) Fan being actually killable or being a Mythic Dawn sleeper who will trying to kill Martin if he follows you to where ever Martin is.
