Oblivion co-op
I hope TESV won't be a MMORPG. There really are too much MMORPG's right now (Guild Wars, World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings Online, Age of Conan Online, Warhammer Online...) and I think the Elder Scrolls is better suited for offline RPG's.
A multiplayer mode won't work either, I think, since it is very easy to cheat, like in Oblivion, you can just fight with 100% Resist Magic and 100% Resist Damage, or use cheats...
It would only work if you cannot choose your equipment and fight in arena's, that would be quite cool...
One thing that I really want is a co-op mode. That someone else can join your game at any moment using LAN or a second controller on the Xbox 360/Playstation 3.
You can do quests together, explore caves together...
You can even share health, inventory...
Like: one of you is a mage, the other a warrior. If the warrior finds a nice staff, he can give it to the mage.
What do you think?
EDIT: Perhaps I placed this topic at the wrong forum but the contact has to do something with Oblivion.
And there's a multiplayer mod for Oblivion.

I chose arena because I thought that online play is fun but you are right. If it was an mmorpg than everything would be so hectic and chaotic. It would be really hard to get things done with people coming up to you and stabbing you. Even if they did restrict that like you had to accept, think how many people would be online at once. There would be major lagging. I think the arena idea is good so that you can enjoy some peace but still go online. I think if you did the arena it would be like, the arena master dude would be like, "Okay, light or heavy armor?" And then you would choose you preference. Then he would ask, "Blade, blunt, marksman, or staff?", then he gives you a selection on armor and weapons based on your level. Then you would battle the person but it would be split into level groups. So levels 1-3 would battle and 4-6 and 7-9 and 10 to 13 and so on so that someone who was like level 25 couldn't battle someone at like level 3 and have an unfair advantage. There would also be a reward for winning. You might get to keep the weapon or armor they gave you. Or they would give you an enchanted weapon or armor. Or maybe gold. They might also give you rare items or items that could be exclusive to this mode of arena. So the only way to get some item is to beat X number of people in the online arena. You may call it unfair that some people wouldn't be able to go online but still, oblivion is like that as on xbox 360 and ps3 some people don't have online capabilities. They may also give you rare ingredients. I think that this way you could have the fun of online play without it being chaotic.

Wouldn't the co-op mode need a complete balancing overhaul? As in; number of badguys, strength/level of badguys, item placement/rewards etc.
Games that work so well in co-op - Gears of War, Halo's, other FPS's (Vegas 2) - were pretty much built from the ground up to include such a mode. Straight co-op play is well suited (and easily tweaked) to/for shooters, not RPG's. TES V would need a complete overhaul to make it work.
Without TES lowering itself to becoming a MMO, a co-op mode would be nice. It's just getting it to work well, without messing up the rest of the game, that would prove problematic. But in the current climate of co-op modes and such, I could see how it'd add another USP to the their IP...

That wouldnt be the hard part. Like in diablo when a player enters a game, all of the monters and stuff get tougher. If blizzard could do it, im positive Elderscrolls could. The Tourist wrote:Wouldn't the co-op mode need a complete balancing overhaul? The Arena sounds like an excellent idea. I've always thought that the next Elder Scrolls needs to either incorporate ALL the nations of Tamriel, or incorporate both Tamriel and Akavir. With the Arena idea, you could have regional champions, then continental champions, then one Nirn-wide champion, by way of a leaderboard or something.
I think co-op would be an interesting idea, too. They could even(though I don't know how some might like this) incorporate certain guild missions to be co-op ONLY, so that in order to complete a mission, you'd be forced to team up with another PC, just as they might do in a real life Fighter's/Mage's Guild, in order to foster teamwork.

Oh I just hope someone from Bethesda is reading this
How the co-op mode can be
You can do the singleplayer game in co-op.
Huh?
Well, it can work like this:
The co-op mode is just exactly the same as the singleplayer game, but it uses different savegames.
So, let's say player 1 (the host) starts a co-op session with player 2 (who joined the game using a LAN).
They both create a new character, start together in jail, and follow the tutorial.
Player 1, the host, can accept all quests, choose which one they're going to do, etc.
Player 2 cannot really join the quest, but he/she can help player 1, fight, gain experience, level-up, buy items, etc.
Some quests need to be redesigned slightly to work in multiplayer. Every quest need to have two rewards, one for player 1, and one for player 2.
The arena must have 2 vs. 2 and 2 vs. 4 fights.
Some dialogs must be changed, so that they don't speak of 'one hero', but of two.
Or what about this: player 1 and 2 must fight against each other for the title of Grand Champion, and the one who dies resurrects near the Arena entrance!
And there can be quests in which the two players both need to do the same in a race against time...
Or they both have a dungeon in which they can place traps, and after they're done they've got to explore each others dungeon and try to survive...
When player 1 and player 2 go to a dungeon together, it must be so that they can share used healing potions/spells.
-------------
Ok that's done.
Let's say that player 1 and player 2 have played over 2 hours.
The next day they want to play again.
They both have savegames which they can select.
What if player 1 selects a savegame at 1:30 hours playing time and player 2 at 1:45 hours playing time?
In that case, the quest progress will be those of player 1, since he's the only one that can really accept quests, but player 2 will start on a different location, so the two have to look for each other where they are.
------------
One more example.
If player 1 starts a co-op with player 3, who hasn't played with him before, player 1 can load one of his savegames from his sessions with player 2.
Player 3 automatically starts next to player 1, but he must first choose a race/class/birthsign.
Perhaps player 3's level will automatically be adjusted to the level player 1 has got, but that are decisions Bethesda got to make, if this co-op mod will ever be realised.

Totally forgot about Boulders Gate.
That game was sooooo short, but we use to play it on PS2 all the time.
The Co-op version was so much more fun than playin by youself. And you got into fights about who got to pick up what. And be like, "Man your better than me, give me your sword!" - "Alright, give me some mana potions."
Never shoulda pawned my PS2 ><

Yeah sometimes a game really is crap but then the co-op mode still is fun
I played Dungeons and Dragons Heroes on the Playstation 2 for about 6 hours without a break with two friends
The graphics suck, the gameplay is very repetitive, the enemies you'll encouter are always the same, the quests aren't very special and we all died about 3-4 times...
But it was soooo fun.
Especially when I had only died twice and they over 4 times so my equipment was much better and my level much higher

Mostly, my wife and I play fantasy RPGs, and mostly, co-op ones.
Titles such as the Baldur's Gate series, Champions of Norrath series, and the upcoming Fable 2 are exactly what we're looking for.
It's something we enjoy doing together, when we have the time. She prefers to be the hack/slash fighter type (she likes to simply dive into the carnage), whereas I'm the mage and/or archer type who weakens 'em up at a distance, so she can dispatch a group of foes quicker.
A co-op TES V would be great, and easily doable I'd imagine...with just some minor reworking (i.e. no 1st person view, and archery's aim would need to be tied to skill level more than player controlled). For example, whether you "hit" or not in Oblivion was all about player skill, not character skill level. Without 1st person, you'd have to use something like what Baldur's Gate or Champions did....

One of the most absurd things about MMORPGs was the ability to redo the same quest, spawns, repeatedly.
I wonder if it would solve the RP problem by only allowing a character to access a given cave, quest-related building/room, etc. ONCE, and that once completed, that was it, couldn't do it again.
This might resolve the "camping/farming" problem with MMORPGs (and it would make people really hold on to the unique drops, etc.)

An arena would be boring in my opinion, and would have too many exploiting noobs to make it fun at all.
TES wouldn't translate well at all into an MMORPG. One of the most important parts of TES is feeling like you're part of the story - the quests are generally actually doing something, not just "Go to Location X and kill Y# of Monster Z". In TES, you sometimes need to get your skills up by grinding before you can do something (I'm going to ignore the autoleveling in Oblivion for the sake of argument, and besides, OOO is the real Oblivion) but it doesn't feel like grinding, it feels like training. Making it an MMO would make the grind much more important.
Co-op mode is the only one I think has any real potential. You'd have to fix the autoleveling problem, but really it would work fine just to inject the 2nd player into the host's game. The quests would go in the host's journal, I guess.
Are we talking about a possible TESV, or are we talking about how multiplayer would best work in Oblivion? Because I'd like to point out that there already is a co-op mod for Oblivion that inserts the 2nd player into the host's Cyrodiil. It just doesn't work very well, and I don't think you can do quests.

Help? Help with what? They don't make a cure for stupid. You'll just have to play through the game all over again. - Butterknife
