The slaves opeend the gate and the two squadrons of Gothamic Knights charged at the first century.

The century would be dazed at the gate suddenly opening.

The horses, running from rest, smashed into teh century with some momentum. The first two lines were crumpled under the horses. The rest of the second cohort, along with the third and fourth, charged forward, towards the gate. The archers opened fire at the lonbowmen.

The longbowmen hid from the arrows and returned fire as soon as the volley eneded. Spearmen and swordsmen ran out of the gate, stabbing at the legionaires whilst the cavalary tried to retreat to the city walls.

The first line of legionaries backed away, to a line that had formed, a safety line. The Knights were allowed to retreat. About ten legionaries were killed trying to fall back. When they did, the spearmen and swordsmen became aware that the legionaries were readying javelins. They released them. With a shudder, about fifty javelins sailed through the air. Some missed, flying over or under but a lot hit. About ten spearmen fell dead and thirty swordsmen were injured.

All the men retreated behind the gates, slaves shutting it. The longbowmen opened fire to the legionaires at the gate.

It was hard to aim as many of the legionaries were protected. The archers had to bend over to fire, making their shots awkward. The legionaries surged forth, continuing their relentless attack on the gate.

The longbowmen fired at the archers again. The gate was thrusted open again, possibly knocking back legionaires. This time, spearmen and swordsmen ran out and did a hit an run.

The gate, already in tatters, did little to push back the legionaries. The spearmen and swordsmen were bogged down in a vicious melee with the EMpire's elite troops.

Slaves swordsmen rushed out to fight the legionaires whislt the swordsmen and spearmen went back.

The slaves were weak but numerous. They quickly swarmed the legionaries. Many legionaries were slain. The legionaries, re-invigorated by their commander calling on them to fight, pushed back the slaves. They killed a lot of them, reducing them to less than half of the original number. As a cost, the first century of the first cohort had very few men left, as did the second century and third century.

Lucy and Merakius could hear the sound of fighting as they made their way to the docks.

Greshi felt himself come loose.

[Nova]

"Lucy, but once this is over, once the empire is pushed back from Gil-Galad and are fighting at their own soil, we will return?" Merakius asked Lucy as they journeyed to the docks.

The elves quickly retreated to the inside of the city, as did man slaves. The longbowmen continued to fire at every legionaire.

"Maybe, maybe." muttered Lucy.

The legionaries pushed forward, trying to make as much progress as possible. There was a real risk of the longbowmen hitting their own troops as the two sides were now locked in ferocious, close quarters combat.

How? I mean tthey retreated into the city walls, never said they left the gate empty. I meant they retreated wthin the city walls, but stayed to defend the gate.

The longbowmen aimed at the backs of the legionaires, making sure to not heat their own men. The men at the ground tried their best to fight back the legionaires. They were joined in combat by Reinvar and Patronicus, both shouting inspiring words.

Despite the skill of the longbowmen, they couldn't be sure who they would hit. A few of their own men fell dead. About fifty legionaries had died since they had pushed into the gate. About the same number of enemies had too. This was going to be a close fight. General Palagus picked up his sword, yelled and marched forward with the rest of the cohorts standing outside the gate.

The longbowmen shot at the other cohorts, aiming especially for General Palagus.

The General was a face lost amongst the many hundreds of legionaries. A few shots missed but they were unsure whether they had hit the General. THe other cohorts arrived behind the centuries fighting the Hegemonic forces at the gate. With the force of the men, they slowly began to push forward.

The men tried with all their might to remain psuhing, but after a while they retreated and the legioanries were emt with the charge of the Gothamic Knights and Mounted Lancers. They were backed up with the rest of the force.

"Shields up!" came a shout.

At teh same time, the legionaries in the front row raised their large, square shields. The horses met steel, tumbling into the shields. The first line and much of the second line was flattened, resulting in the deaths of about fifty legionaries and the injuring of a hundred more. Many of the horsemen had been thrown from their saddles or their horses had collapsed after charging into teh shield wall. The legionaries began hacking at the horses and the men, slaying many before they could get away. The main Hegemonic force met, pushing back the legion by a few metres before it recovered.

The horsemen tried to retreated, dragging their horses with them. The swrodsmen and spearmen pushed, Reinvar shouting moral support from the abcka dn Patronicus in the front slashing at the legionaires.

The horsemen were left with half their number. One of the squadrons of mounted lancers, the one that had already been in an engagement, had lost nearly all its men.

The swordsmen and the spearmen made some ground but were pushed back. The legion had lost 3/4ths of the first cohort and half of the second but the other cohorts had taken few casualties.

The men retreated, but the 950 elven guards remained. The longbowmen cotninued to fire from the walls, as the other men carried their injured away.

The sixth cohort, with all of its men, went to find the ramps leading to the walls while the other legionaries took up positions and attacked the elven guards.

[Nova]

The swordmesn and spearmen (not the Elven guards) charged at the men trying to get up tot the walls. The longbowmen shot at the legionaires as they went up the ramps. The elven guards tried to stop anymore legionaires coming in through the gate.
