It was something extra to do that brought me loot and skills. Otherwise, I cringe whenever someone refers to my very awesome all-star mage as a bard.

^ Agreed. That's a huge part of why I refuse to finish that quest. I roleplay an evil Khajiit Vampire Lord, and it'd just completely break immersion for me if every guard I ran into referred to me as a bard.

Not true. That's a waste of a good piece of wood.
And a waste of good sh*t... Hmm... I wonder what we could call them...
I'm Commander Shepard, and this is my favourite forum on the internet.

Yeah, my first evil assassin type of character joined them out of curiosity but it just felt so silly. I just came up with some stupid explanation that during one of his drunken escapades he was challenged to become a bard. And, not one to back down from a bet (no matter how stupid), he did XD.
Another one of my characters did the questline just because he had already happened to find those items so I thought "Hey, extra rewards are always welcome (and I want these items out of my freaking inventory)." Though with this particular character it was pretty easy to explain via rolepay because he's bit of an opportunistic "I have ulterior motives but I hide my scheming nature under a pleasant demeanour" -type and prefers to keep his public image approachable. So if the guards call him a bard, he'll just give them a dashing smile in return XD.
