Fallout: Overseas

Post by MARS »

War. War never changes. Wether small, or big, at its core war is always the same. As interests conflict, humanity knows no better than to resort to its primal instinct, and destroy whatever opposes it. On 23th of October 2077, the greatest war of the all raged, for a mere two hours. Two hours were enough to smash what humanity had built to smithereens. America was bombed apart, cities fell, forests burned, and millions upon millions died. Only some of humanity survived. Those who had given in to paranoia, and applied for residence in a Vault, subterranean buildings, designed for the purpose of withstanding nuclear war (or so it seemed), and those who withstood the heat and radiation, the ghouls. You know all this, for you are part of this world, post-apocalyptic America, where the 50s survive, albeit as a mutated and twisted version of itself. But what happened elsewhere in the world? Find out, in:

Fallout: Overseas

The current year is 2167. Most have been preoccupied with rebuilding what humanity had destroyed in its blind rage, or continued to revel in that rage, killing, looting, and stealing. But some are more interested in other things. Some seek information above all, curiosity being their only driving force. One such, is Professor Bartholomew Cubbins, an isolated scientist. History had always been his greatest passion, and recording it has been his life's work. He has gathered a lot of history about post-apocalyptic America, but now his spirit yearns for more. He wishes to bid his sails to distant lands, across the Atlantic, to the European Commonwealth. But he needs helpers. Gunmen, engineers, diplomats labourers, men and women to do as he says, to go with him across the world, and back. For history.

You are one of those helpers. Like your future companions, you heard Prof. Cubbins' plea for help, a radio message on an infinite loop:
Scientist seeks partners for great explorational and scientific undertaking. Any man or woman, human or ghoul able to assist in any possible way is welcome. The reward will be as follows: Any findings will be split up between the entire party. Negotiations possible. Interrested parties are to report their interrest at the most important pre-war christian landmark in Providence, Rhode Island.
Now you are arriving in Providence, and your adventure begins.

It was a bright day, and hot. The puddles that littered the streets of Providence had shrunk into tiny clones of themselves, leaving only traces of salt to indicate their original size. It didn't make the ghost town any less intimidating, however. A feeling of dread would creep into anyone's spine, were they to walk through the streets, both on this and any other day. No one went to Providence. The true reason was lost to time; here and there older people told stories of evil men or monsters, but there was no factual evidence to back up any of them. Only one thing was certain: whoever went there at night never came back.

Shane Callan knew all this, and he was starting to get irritated. He had been standing beneath the large church for almost an hour, judging by the sun's position, and still no one else had arrived. Yet he was sure that a lot of people must have heard the cryptic radio message; he himself had heard it transmitted on multiple radio devices, and he had talked about it with several people. Yet there he was, alone. Not that he was afraid. No, he had complete confidence in his abilities. He had positioned himself in a way that made it impossible for anyone to ambush him, and he had proved that he was a faster shot than most time after time. But the endless wait was really getting on his nerves. One hand firmly on the trusty .22 pistol under his black leather jacket, the other running through his wild dark brown mane, he stood there, scanning the plaza in front of him for other beings; human or not.

Flames and smoke poured out from John Carter Brown Library. One ghoul witnessed it. He sat on a park bench under a flag post, legs crossed, a black duffel bag next to him. He wore a black, immaculately clean three-piece suit with a blood-red tie over a pearl-white dress shirt, as well as matching shoes and a fedora. The ghoul stared at the inferno with only his blackish-brown right eye, as a patch covered his left. He was absolutely still for many long moments, showing no indication he was aware of the sun or the heat. Finally, he opened the bag, his gold cufflinks jingling quietly.

Inside were 10 stimpaks, a satchel of bottle caps, a machete, a canteen, a carton of cigarettes, two books, and an extra box of .308 ammunition. His extra suit and undergarments were stowed in a garment bag on top of everything else. Each of the books bore a partially blacked-out stamp: "Property of Brown ..."

The ghoul, Brown, grimaced as he closed the bag and updated the inventory screen of the Pip-Boy strapped on his wrist, then turned on its radio. "Scientist seeks partners for great explorational and scientific undertaking … " He listened to it repeat as he prepared and loaded an aged semi-automatic .308 rifle, which had "Bunsen" etched into its butt, with practiced ease, not even looking down at it as he did so.

Brown finally stood and brushed off his suit. He shut off the radio and slung the duffel over his shoulder, then took one last look at the smoldering library. He doffed his fedora to it briefly, revealing his hairless, mottled scalp, then picked up the rifle. His shoes tapped against the broken asphalt as he strolled towards the church alluded to in the message.

Spoiler:
So it is 4 years before Fallout starts. Neat.

What is the month?
Faust came up to the outskirts of Providence. He adjusted his eye patch. He was wearing green combat armour and had a close grip on his hunting shotgun. He took a swill of whiskey from his canteen and entered the town. Faust walked past the rusted shells that were once cars.
So we have come to solve every squabble in the village personally?

Two figures walked out from the shadows, one large and the other small, male and female.

"Let's go let's go let's go!" The female shouted, quickly climbing a rock and jumping above the male's head.

"Calm down, A," The male said, not unkindly, using the female's nickname. "We've never been here before. We don't know what lurks here."

"Old Leon's been here," The female accused. "He says it's just fine."

"Leon is over eighty years old," The male reminded his companion. "The last time he was here was fifty years ago, he admits."

The female made a 'pfft' sound. "The world doesn't change much, it's a pretty dull place."

"You, of all people, should know that isn't true." Said the male, evoking a cheeky smile from his friend.

"No, you." She said, sticking her tongue out. "It was a joke! Lighten up, ya big lug."

The suburbs of Providence

Useless.... Useless... Useless...
Stacks of old plates, drawers of bent cutlery, cabinets of perishable (and long perished)food. Scavenging wasn't the most consistent of providers.

Tink was rummaging through the musty, abandoned carcass of what had once been a stylish suburban home. She had cursorily checked the bedrooms, which had been empty of anything more valuable than some twine, peeked into a washroom that housed nothing more than the rancid overflows of a long overwhelmed sewer system and a packet of mentats in a cabinet, and a living room whose television lay shattered on the splintering hardwood floors.

Sometimes she wondered what it had been like, but it was easier not to try. The past was gone.

The kitchen now. She could live without more electronic baubles to tweak and toy with, but she wouldn't fare well without food.

She cautiously opened the fridge. A warm, rancid smell greeted her, and she gasped a breath as she quickly grabbed a can of spaghetti sauce and a bottle of Nuka-Cola. The beverage seemed nigh-on indestructible, and she was thrilled to find some. One of life's few pleasures.

She sat down at one of the kitchen chairs, and popped the cap off on the edge of the table, carefully placing the bent metal in a pocket.

Tink wasn't much to look at. She was a slip of a fourteen year old girl, clad in faded old clothes darned and patched a half a hundred times in various places. She wore a dark purple hooded sweatshirt, the colour worn in some places so much that the white threads stood out. He jeans were faded until they were almost white, but a patchwork of scraps of fabric kept them together. Her t-shirt over her scrawny chest was white, and had the faintest hint of once reading Disneyland.

Her face was pale and narrow, and her hair long and as ark a brown as her eyes. A black backpack hung from her back.

After a moment of deliberation, she tapped a few keys on her Pip-boy. It wasn't a bad habit to occasionally check the radio signals, they had led her to interesting things before. She spun the knob freely, listening to the whine of empty static, dead airwaves.

...and scientific undertaking. Any man or woman, human or ghoul able to assist in any possible way is welcome.
Tink's eyes widened. Scientific undertaking?!? In a world where the most intelligent life she seemed to meet was content to kill her and take her stuff, science? it was too good to be true. Nevertheless, she turned up the volume.
The reward will be as follows: Any findings will be split up between the entire party. Negotiations possible. Interrested parties are to report their interrest at the most important pre-war christian landmark in Providence, Rhode Island. Scientist seeks partners for great explorational and scientific undertaking...
The teenage girl deftly muted the computer, shouldered her back, and finished off what was left of the warm, sweet, but pleasantly bubbly beverage. It would be a risk, certainly... But she didn't want to spend her whole life combing subdivisions for useful components.

But what Christian landmark? A church, sure, but there had to be more than a handful in the city, and she knew less than nothing about the city's history.

The answer presented itself after a moment's thought: A library database.

She made her way out into the house's backyard, briefly consulted her map, and made her way through the comparative safety of backyard suburbia toward the nearest library.

A tall man stood on an empty box, near the shores of what looked like a long forgotten dock. He took a slice of cheese out of his backpack, some of the last food he had. He was a wanderer, as he had no where to live. He took off his brown faded backpack, and pulled out an assault rifle. Inside the pack were a sack of coins, some extra ammunition for his rifle, and about 5 Stimpacks he found near an abandoned school.

He fiddled around with his Pip-Boy for some time, then turned on the radio, and turned the nob in hope of finding something of interest. When he found it, he could not believe his ears. Actual... science? Out here in the wasteland? Immediately he pulled up his backpack and slung it around his back, and picked up his rifle, and headed as best he could to this "Christian landmark" which the radio signal told of, before spotting an old gas station, and a few overturned cars. It looked like a truck stop to him.

ALL HAIL SCIENCW
The little woman jumped down from the rubble and wrapped her arms around her male compatriot's neck, swinging as he walked. Her face was like a weasel's - thin and angular, her jet black hair pulled back in a tight ponytail.

"That old mapmaker in The Commonwealth - how much can we trust him, Ty? Is there really a church out here?" The female asked airily.

"Our entire life is dedicated to exploring new things, meeting new contacts to help us along the way, Aella," Said the male known as Ty. "You read the message, didn't you?"

Aella rolled her stormy grey-blue eyes and pulled a large phone out of the pocket of her tattered black leather jacket, and read the message aloud. "Aella," She began, "It's wonderful to hear from you again. I remember when you walked in here when you were only eleven, on the back of our friend," She squeezed her arms around the male's back affectionately. "Hard to believe that was three years ago. This message is rather easy to decipher, yada yada. According to my maps, there is a pre-war church standing in near perfect condition, near the middle of the town. Stay safe and bla bla bla bla." Aella informally finished.

"If he thinks the church is standing, then it is standing." Aella's friend confirmed.

Outskirts of Providence

Naomi Gilead crept up behind what used to be a wall, and was now only an upright concrete slab that offered little other than cover.

She gripped her grandfather's sniper rifle tight, pressing her back against the wall. She took a deep breath. Just be calm. Don't panic. Panicking will get you killed. Just play it safe.

Naomi leaned her small frame around, peering through the scope. She was still a teenager, a girl of half-cajun and half-japanese descent with black hair and blue eyes, her eyes unmistakable as near-perfect copies of her grandfather's. The fear in her eyes was painfully apparent. She tried to stop her fidgeting as she adjusted the scope, peering at the church and the surrounding area and surveying the possible advantages she could make use of.

Slowly she snuck forward, approaching the church oh-so carefully.

Spoiler:
K
Over the next few hours, Tink warily and cautiously advanced through the city, checking the waypoint on her computer now and again. Every time she had to cross a street caused a momentary panic, but she arrived at her destination without encountering anything more than a pair of wild dogs tearing at an unidentifiable corpse. She silently bid them a good meal, and they passively watched her go.

It wasn't too long before she found the library. A simple, single-storeyed building, red brick, with the windows and doors boarded up diligently, as so many other buildings were.

The girl carefully crossed the road, and slipped into the alley that separated the building from a half-collapsed laundromat, stepping over tarred shingles that littered the ground and chunks of crumbling brick, before she slipped behind the building. A simple steel door hung on one of it's rusted hinges, prompting a relieved smile from Tink.

She yanked on the door a few times, to no avail, and hit the remaining hinge with a tire iron until it snapped, dropping the door flat.

She stepped inside. She appeared the be in the rear utility area. She moved away from line-of-sight with the door, clammed up, and waited. She certainly didn't want to get shot over a bit of information.

Several minutes passed. Nothing,

She opened up the next door she came across. Check-out. Perfect.

She sat down on the old swivel-chair, which promptly collapsed, spilling her onto the dirty floor.

Her voice less than a croak from misuse, she murmured "I guess I deserved that..." A wry smile on her face.

She stood on her knees, and held the power button on the terminal. After a half a minute, the ancient screen powered up, revealing the black screen, and her flashing green cursor.

She tapped the keys, having to mash the I furiously to get it to work, and attempted to log into the admin account. The screen meekly asked for a password.

After a quick rummage through the drawers revealed nothing, she tried to hack it. The password was only five characters, so it only took her a quarter of an hour or so.

The screen flashed to life. Tink grinned.

An hour or so of research revealed a few possible candidates, but the 'First Baptist' church seemed like the most likely candidate. She uploaded the location onto her pip-boy, and superimposed it over her map. Right near downtown.

She packed up, and set off once more.

- - -

She arrived near the church after another few hours of careful travel, breaking into a three-storeyed building across the street and climbing to the third floor. She ignored the possible plunder, found a window, pulled up a rotting old chair, and settled in to wait.

Naomi gasped and immediately pressed her back to a piece of rubble, cursing her jitteriness. Slowly she drew her shotgun, looking for something like a car's gas tank to shoot to take care of the threat. She hoped it wasn't anything too dangerous, like a mutated ghoul.

The mutated ghoul continued on his way through the town. He hadn't encountered much so far. Town seemed to just be another forsaken hole in what was once America. Faust caught sight of the First Baptist church up ahead. This better be worth the trip. Faust approached it weapon at the ready.

Callan analyzed the situation for a few moments. The footsteps had stopped. That probably meant that the other party was aware of his presence. He knew nothing about this other party. The situation was pretty clear.

"If you're here about the radio message, come out," he barked. He was initially planning to say more, but he decided against it.

Spoiler:
Did you mean 2157, Kerr?
Brown only had to walk a couple blocks before he saw the steeple of a church. The Meetinghouse. As always, he was impressed it was still standing. He remembered it had been a brilliant white, once upon a time. Now, like everything else in sight, it was caked with decades of dirt and decaying.

Everything except his suit, that is. He looked down at the little portion of the Old World he had managed to preserve flawlessly, and his mind started to drift back to those days. He remembered arriving in the city for the first time and becoming hopelessly lost. It was the church that had guided him to his destination, Brown University. Now, 94 years later, it would guide him away from what was really the only home he'd ever had.

Indistinct sounds reached his warped ears and snapped him out of his revery. The city was much more active than usual. He briefly considered staking out the church and seeing what he was dealing with, but he knew he had to get out of the city before nightfall. This called for the direct approach. He continued walking, making no attempt to hide, as he carefully stepped around the radioactive puddles.

From her derelict vantage point, Tink watched the church suspiciously.

"If you're here about the radio message, come out!" The man called, his voice carrying ominously across the street.

"Are you a trap, sir?" Tink murmured, narrowing her eyes as she watched. "Come out! Come out!" She repeated in a whisper, before sighing. She wasn't going to get anywhere if she hid.

She periodically dug through her bag to find her prize possession: That lump of stainless steel and black plastic, the single-action .32 revolver and the two rounds that accompanied it. She ensured that the hammer was safely forward and that the cylinder was half a spin from ability to fire, and unceremoniously stuffed the gun into the front of her jeans. She could intimidate her way out of a confrontation, maybe, even if she didn't have the guts to fight her way out of one...

She shouldered her backpack, and as she was leaving, made another quick scan out of the window.

"Oh, [&@%!]." She mumbled to herself. One ghoul approaching the church armed, and another one in a fancy suit.

Her heart in her throat, caught between rushing outside and running and cooly approaching the newcomers and introducing herself. Her hand on the butt of her pistol, she subconsciously decided to simply wait and watch.

Callan heard him. He still wasn't sure about the situation. It could be a trap, or all the people gathering around the church could simply be there because of the radio message. Or both.

"Come out where I can see you if you're here about the radio message!" he called again. Then, he took the magazine out of his pistol, and threw it onto the middle of the plaza, hoping that whoever else was there would take the hint that he was now unarmed...and then reloaded silently.

Tink gulped, watching the exchange through the window. What was that he tossed? A little black... What?

After a moment of consideration, she decided anything other than a magazine made no sense. Maybe there was some promise to the proposal after all...

Not allowing herself to solidify the fears of pain and death if she exposed herself, of the Ghoul blowing her in half with his shotgun, of the man in the church opening up with some hidden weapon, or any of the other terrible eventuality, she pattered down the stairs. opened the door a dozen inches, and slipped out into the open, into the view of the church, and the ghoul on the steps, her heart ponding wildly.

Callan grunted as he heard the ghoul's voice. So there was a ghoul. Callan wasn't racist, but he knew some ghouls could be. The whole thing could be an organized anti-smoothskin hate crime. Then again, the person speaking on the radio message hadn't been a ghoul.

"Okay," he said, after thinking the situation through once more. He came to the conclusion that the whole thing was getting really annoying and that he wanted to get it over with.

"Okay," he said again. "I'm coming out. Do you have a weapon you can cover me with?"

"Why? Do you think something is going to swoop down from the sky to kill you the second you step outside?" asked Faust. He sighed and looked at the shotgun in his hands and the the 45 auto pistol in the holster around his waist. "Yeah, come on out."
