Re: Playing as Yourself
As others have said, I always do the first play through as myself. So more of a neutral good. But I always look to join the Dark Brotherhood and serve Daedric lords with my me character too, as that's what I'd do in TES universe.
And as for the real life realtion. I don't know how I'd do with magic, but I instruct MMA and am in the US Army, so despite being small, I'd fit in well in the warrior class.
If only I could make a short Ginger Nord.

Re: Playing as Yourself
I never play as myself... a built red head chemist with a nordic build, (broad forehead, broad shoulders, athletic build) but not quite tall enough to be a nord.
But I always put my personality into my characters. Personally, I think that is best expressed as a dunmer. To be specific, I NEVER liked house redoran (big religion and big military), but I loved telvanni and hlaalu (political power and personal influence go a long way, and yet if you deserve it you better be willing to die for it)

Re: Playing as Yourself
I never played as myself with a physical view. Only with the character's personality, you know.
Don't really know how that would work out and I'm sure it would be a boring playthrough.
I'd, more than likely, be a character related to sneak and stealing (not pickpocket). And no, I'm not a thief. But I have the skills (at least I had in the past, but I just used them as a mean to joke around with friends).

Re: Playing as Yourself
I have never modelled a character after myself when it comes to appearances. Heck, I usually play as male characters even though I'm female
.
However, I occasionally put some of my personality into my characters. This especially happens when I'm a noob and having my first run. By then I'm just getting used to the game and don't really know what I want to do and who I'll become so I usually make choices like I would. It helps me immerse myself in the game. This tends to change after a certain amount of time when I finally get hit by a proper roleplaying ideas. Characters after that are way more refined and I try to give them different kind of views that I have. I feel like playing as a male somewhat helps me with that.
One could say there's always a little bit of me in my characters and I think that's pretty much the case with every player there. For example: I have some preferences that I find really hard to shake. Like... all my current characters are elves (I lost my Breton when my comp crashed) and I also find it hard to make a straightforward warrior. All of my characters (both in Oblivion and Skyrim) were some sort of thieves/assassins or mage hybrids. I have yet to make a full-blown tank =P. I have always preferred games where I can be stealthy or acrobatic or have some sort of tricks up my sleeve (never been a fan of those more straighforward FPS games) and this part of me is reflected in Skyrim as well. I also tend to put some small parts of my personality to my characters. Almost every character I have is an opportunist which is pretty much me
. Though, naturally, they tend to get way more extreme.
However, this thread gave me an idea. I think I'll create a character who not only looks like me but also does choices like I would. And to make it more fun, I'm gonna make her my "Dead is Dead" character >:D. That way I'll have to really worry about my own well-being and thus feel extra immersed in the game. I think she'll actually greatly resemble my lost Breton character. She was a sneaky illusion mage and that kinda suits me. I like to use strategy and avoid conflicts if possible so yeah, sounds about right.

Re: Playing as Yourself
I'm feeling a bit philosophical here: I think that our all our characters feed this deep need for experiencing life as someone else...but still as yourself. Both my characters have a mixture of my own traits...slightly. I don't go around blowing up things and killing people, but the idea is there. My High Elf is vain, sarcastic, has a fiery disposition and go-getter attitude, much like myself. I don't think I'm vain though. My Imperial is a petite, tanned, earthy lady...also much like myself. So one looks somewhat like me while the other one's personality is similar to my own. With the obvious extremes I give the during rp I would say I play a mixture of myself. Totally cocky, I know.

Re: Playing as Yourself
If we are going to make the Altmer and Dunmer have a culture that they are based off of IRL might i suggest Chinese and Japanese cultures? Japanese feudal society seems very similar to the Dunmer. Several ruling families vying for power but all of which are under the honored and respected monarch. Also the strict etiquette so classical of the elves and their isolationism style policies it seems a perfect fit.
s.
This would also work for the Altmer though to me at least it leaned more towards the societies in Ancient China. Where there is a strict hierarchy. They are also highly sophisticated and advanced, they have magics that rival the machines of the dwarves. Also their selective breeding practices seem to match up with nobles of all cultures that seem to breed within the family tree.

Now, does anyone else play as themselves? Create a character that (as much as possible) looks like you and then make the choices you'd make when in the situations your Dovahkiin finds himself in?
If you do play this way, do you make it a guy that grew up on Tamriel and just happens or to have the same personality and all as you or do you attempt to shoe-horn in an explanation of how you ended up in Tamriel?

Re: Playing as Yourself
I used to do this in every game, but I learned since then to form to the game's limits...
Anyways, I would probably be this:
Race: Argonian
Skills: Illusion, Enchanting, Sneak, Archery, Alchemy
Personality: A thirst for knowledge, but slow on the draw. (It is hard to admit that, since I always want to imagine myself with my game character's potential...)

Im Usually a Redguard (im white in real life , so hes not modelled after my appearance
) , i make him a warrior with skill in Restoration , and the personality is usually a nice guy , who likes to ask a lot of questions
so im not sure ... perhaps i base the smaller aspects of his personality off of me

Well, my heritage (ancestors) were from France and Switzerland, so...Breton for me.
And I'm more of a cautious, quick person, so I would favor light armor with one handed weapon and a shield, with archery as secondary skill.
Though I'm not sure if I can make a character that physically looks like me, but I can try. xD

I no longer make characters who look like me. Back in the day, I made a Tony Hawks Pro Skater 4 character wo looked exactly like me, and I actually had a panic attack after it gave me flashbacks to a particularly nasty bicycle accident that required surgery and almost cost me the use of my right hand.
I don't do lookalike characters anymore.

Re: Playing as Yourself
Interesting topic. I've never given it overmuch thought, which makes my character choices kind of interesting. I've always gravitated to Nords, even when the race perks didn't especially fit the skills I ended up focusing on.
Just so happens I'm of Norwegian and Swedish heritage, spend a ton of time outdoors (fishing, camping, hunting)... My PCs routinely get distracted from whatever they're supposed to be doing by a chance to stalk a deer or a little salmon fishing. Not a lot different than IRL frankly - I blew off work Monday because the fish were biting... I instantly sided with the Stormcloaks my first play-through...and I have relatives who fought in the Norwegian resistance in WWII. The Skyrim for the Nords attitude works for me, even though Ulfric's xenophobia gets on my nerves.
The rather prickly sense of right and wrong the TES Nords seem to have written around them resonates with me for some reason, plus I love some of the Nordic quirks that found their way into the game. I honestly laughed out loud at some of the actor accents the first time I played Skyrim - a few of them sound exactly like some of the old Norwegian farmers I grew up around - the smith in Windhelm and the guy who owns Hollyfrost Farm especially. Doesn't take much work with the face editor to make a passable likeness of me either. Even have a pretty good scar.
Like I said, never gave it much thought, but Nord is a pretty comfortable skin for me to jump into. Funny how that works. There's probably a psychology paper waiting to be written here somewhere.

Re: Playing as Yourself
When it comes to playing as myself, i kind of do. When i stumble across situations, i handle them how I see fit. I don't really make a decision based on how my character would react.
Re: Playing as Yourself
Sort of. I mean some decisions my character makes are what I would probably do in real life, but not really. I mean, it's a fantasy game, we play it so we can pretend we don't live in real life.

Re: Playing as Yourself
Then you could be the hunched over scraggly man being lead along by a nice beautiful young woman/apprentice (any female mage followers that are hot?), and surprise everyone with your super crazy magical capabilities. As long as you can lift your palm you can pretty much lift anything after reading a book on telekinesis. Wish everything worked like that.Mefris Elmek wrote:I've got a bad back and a dodgy right knee which would make it pretty boring to playGanit wrote:First off, I had to fight the urge to name this thread "Playing With Yourself."

On second thought, I might make that one of my roleplays.
I'm still trying to figure out what my character's skills would be. I don't know what I'd specialize in or what evil I would fight if I were in Tamriel. I would be Breton, because I'm primarily English. I would commit like zero crimes, because I'm afraid to commit even the slightest misdemeanor in life, so that kind of cancels out thievery. I've never been a very violent person, and I'm a very "live and let live" kind of guy. I'm kind of a slacker with a ton of wasted potential, and my life goal is to pursue and help people achieve healthy and true happiness. A large part of this happiness is studying spiritual beliefs and meditation and such. So maybe I should play a monk or hermit mage? Build a house in an interesting place like the peak of a mountain. (I love the possibilities of roleplaying when I have learned how to use the Creation Kit) What do you guys think? I want some kind of mortal enemy....a nemesis or dark evil that I personally hate but...I'm not a very hateful person. Politics don't concern me, and mean people I usually am able to brush off so...maybe a dremora hunting mage?

I play as myself so if I am low on food I would go to steal food or hunt food. Same thing with money I would steal money if I am in need.

Re: Playing as Yourself
I have to confess I've done exactly this in Morrowind, Oblivion AND Skyrim. I get my shaving mirror from the bathroom and sit for ages tweaking the face sliders until my in-game character looks as much like me as possible. My Skyrim character is the closest yet. The only differences are the neat red warpaint and the weight slider set high so he's a musclebound version of me. After all, I'd expect to be built like Conan the Bararian if I'm swinging a heavy sword all day every day. Er, I haven't seen my abs since I was in my early 20's, and I'm now nearly 51, so they've been AWOL for nigh on 3 decades.
And yes, I roleplay AS myself, making the same moral choices in-game as I do in real-life. I'm a "good guy" who likes helping people, see? I give every beggar a Gold coin and never fail to help anyone in distress, or bring a bad guy to justice. I'm a law-abiding citizen too. No tresspasses, stealing, assaults, or murders. The only exceptions are the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood jobs, but always aiming for zero Bounty. If I'm detected and get a Bounty, I reload and try a different tactic. So far, Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim have been played multiple times, every time totally Bounty free except where one is absolutely unavoidable (e.g. the ONLY possible way to advance a quest). So far, I'm on my second Skyrim play-through (over 450 hours total gameplay time) with zero Lifetime Bounty.
Yay! My post count has finally reached my birth year, 1961!

Re: Playing as Yourself
I started my Skyrim character Alarra kind of based on me - not so much appearance, except maybe starting with the most similar nose to mine and then changing it a bit - but more the decisions I made. I would have destroyed the Dark Brotherhood and I had no intention of joining the Thieves Guild. Then I realized that I probably won't have time to build up another character, and did them. So it became less about choices and more about experiencing everything I could. Maybe if I get time sometime I'll play another character more like me.
My Oblivion character, Brielle, looks quite a lot like me. Like I said on the Oblivion character thread, I don't know whether having a character that looks like me makes me have more of an emotional connection to the character or is just unsettling. So far I've been playing her more to my personality, but again it might become a case of just experiencing all the quests/factions/etc.
