What could come after Hearthfire?
So, I am ultra excited for Hearthfire to come out. While it lacks proper quests and the like, I think it is rather cool that Bethesda have given us a chance to actually build a home for ourselves in the land of Skyrim. That being said, it got me thinking. What if in a future DLC pack, they let you actually open your own business, store, or kiosk in any of the towns/cities? That is the thought behind my idea, a DLC pack called, "Blessing of Zenithar" (the god of economics/money). You could take what you find in your wanderings or on quests and put it up for sale, and possibly have NPCs purchase it for big bucks. While it would be boring to sit behind the counter all day, you could hire a store keeper to watch the place for you while you go out and acquire new wares for your store. Another thing that could come into play is your speechcraft skill/any other skill you have a potent mastery of. Example, if you opened your own weapons stall (let's just say it's right across from Warmaiden's) and you need to get the word out. Your worker lackey could place advertisements all over the place, and depending on your speechcraft skill your ads would could be either very convincing or just another piece of spam mail that gets thrown in the fire at night. Your skill in blacksmithing could come into play too, as if you have a higher level people would be more readily inclined to buy your wares again and again because your work is exemplary.
Another aspect that could come into play is dealing with the thieves guild/the town or city government. You would have to take care to ensure that your store does not suddenly get robbed or that you miss the Jarl's summons to purchase some of your finer goods for sale at their palace or longhouse. It could give those Skyrim players who enjoy the grind of fashioning 100+ iron daggars to sell them for prices that they would set, as opposed to getting lowballed by that [&@%!] Belathor in Whiterun.
What do you guys think? Does this sound like a fun idea? If you find the prospect of owning your own business enticint, what would you add to this? Leave a civil reply below and let's get to brainstorming! (also, if this generates enough buzz, the higherups may check it out. So start chatting!)

Re: What could come after Hearthfire?
I voted for weapons vendor but wouldn't mind any of the choices or maybe a booth or shop offering enchanting services. I would like to see the option to actually order specific items from the existing vendors with a small charge. Speak to a Blacksmith and ask them to make me a Dwarven War Axe or Dragonbone Dagger etc. this way I wouldn't need to stick all of perks into smithing. Or an alchemist and order a potion of whatever. The court mages could offer enchanting services if you supply the raw materials or they could supply them but it would cost you more.

Re: What could come after Hearthfire?
I beleive you mean Zenithar, not Julianos. Julianos is the god of literature, law and history. He is also associated with magic. Zenithar is the god of work and commerce.
On the topic at hand, this would be a good "smaller" DLC. Providing ways to make money that dosen't involve combat will only increase roleplaying potential. I would be a happy chappy if a DLC like this was released. On the products I would sell, it would depend on the character.

As to my mix up of the divines, I went in and fixed it in the post. My bad guys, sometimes I get some of the 9 Divines crossed up. Glad to see some people like this idea as much as I do.

I would open a meat shop and only sell human hearts. Then kill any other food vendors in the city so everyone is force to eat the hearts

Setting up a vendor shop might be fun! But would it be okay for me to sell stolen goods in my shop? xD

Re: What could come after Hearthfire?
While I really like the idea of following the Merchant's path, I don't know how easy it would be to implement. Face it, you are the only customer in Skyrim. NPCs aren't scripted to buy anything. Stuff they need, like food at scripted mealtimes, simply appears when they need it. It never depletes, they never go shopping for it, and they don't have an income anyway. And Merchants don't buy from you, you sell to them. That is to say, they don't initiate the purchase process. You're in the driver's seat from beginning to end during every transaction.
To get a concept like this to work, it would require a major overhaul of NPC AI packages and fundamental game mechanics. You'd basically be creating a new game, not a simple add-on to an existing game.

Re: What could come after Hearthfire?
Selling potions/poisons would be cool I guess but money is so easy to get in Skyrim that it's kind of irrelevant sadly so I don't see them doing this.

Something that I think would be great to add in the next dlc would be dyes for clothes and mage robes. But not as the next big thing if they did add business dlc I would sell weapons and armor it's easy to get supplies.

I already do the business thing; I kill enemies, and sell their loot.

Re: What could come after Hearthfire?
Evil-i brings up a good point. But if it worked like your spouses 'store' but the money you made was based off the goods, you sold, your skills/perks, standing in the hold, Theives guild, and with other traders it could work. You never actually sell anything but set up prices and the game works it out.
As The Midnight Lance said, I'd like dye's for clothes, leather armor, etc.

Re: What could come after Hearthfire?
Being a merchant does sound interesting, but there are too many obstacles, mainly technical ones but also some involving your own playing experience. Even in a place like Tamriel, shopkeepers can't just leave their store for days on end to go adventuring. For realism, there'd be some sort of obligation to constantly return to your store, interrupting the existing gameplay experience. The majority of people, excepting the most in-depth roleplayers, would find this idea unappealing.
Start the groove.

In a game like Skyrim, spouses are there to feed your children and act like you are their pimp. You've made a "cozy little profit".Alnevar Odai wrote:All I know is that when my spouse made more money than me in a day I go on a bandit murder spree.

Re: What could come after Hearthfire?
You could always use your spouse or follower to man the store whilt you go adventuring or you could be a wandering merchant with a cart or donkey and go round the smaller settlements, this way you could halt at likely looking caves/ruins etc. to investigate.EpicAbrad wrote:Being a merchant does sound interesting, but there are too many obstacles, mainly technical ones but also some involving your own playing experience. Re: What could come after Hearthfire?
You know, you could legitimately have a "store" in house. The plants that you place give you 4 ingredients and they grow back extremely fast. Stone for building is in infinite supply and sells a gold a piece. You can go iron mining and build weapons and armor in your cellar or outside. And then sell them to your wife to sell to other people.derp53 wrote:considering in Hearthfire you can build your own from the ground up I would hope so too, unless you really don't like the house you built<_<Br3admax wrote:A dlc that makes me want to come home, I hope.

Re: What could come after Hearthfire?
Would be okay but, really not what elderscrolls is about, hearthfire was good because people have wanted it since morrowind. But, what i think it needs to happen is actualy quit a few directions you could go with things:
1: You become high king;
you have to gain support from the other holds and they could put in a capital city somewhere or they could just use solitude but either way you become the high king and you can decide if you want to use the stormcloakes or the empire, even can make your own faction to protect skyrim and they travel the roads of skyrim, be able to restore some of the old forts or make new ones in say 5- 8 forts could be placed, which could turn out to be like the thieves guild special quest.
2: Blackbriar empire;
You could over run maiden and take over her empire could build warehouse in all the cities, like riften or near like in whiterun, could have the option for her to be second in command or send her packing to morrowind
3: Thalmore war
either it be the empire or stormcloaks skyrim broke the treaty and now caused a war with them, could be available after your are high king, or you get involved somehow like all elderscrolls missions
4: East empire trading company
Dont really know what direction to go in this but, anyone out their like me with the quest in windhelm you were very disappointed that they didnt take it further
5: Forsworn
Again you could go to war with the forsworn and finally drive them out all together now they are in the west but, try to purge eastwards so another war can be had.
I mean really skyrim left many open ends to it, probably the plan to see what direction they wanted to go but, that is my take on it, i have a couple more but, these to me will be more geared to what has happened uin the storyline

Re: What could come after Hearthfire?
Totally Thalmor war. But it probably won't happen. I hope what comes next is something exciting. Yes, Heartfire is all nice and gives my characters something sweet to come home to but I miss the good 'ole ass kicking days.
