Do you mean most powerful Enchanted, Unenchanted or "as is" weapon?

Enchanted would def be a self-enchant at an altar, and this would be the most powerful "overall" as well.

Unenchanted depends abit on what you go for, I guess Daedric Claymore (I don't know the Blunt power, but I think Claymore has more), but for a Blade, I always pref single-handed for the sneak-attack bonus.

"as is" I think it might be (I'm assuming no DLCs?) Goldbrand?? I think Umbra has more base damage, but Goldbrand has a damaging enchant as well (as opposed to just Soul Trap).

I agree with weka; I've got Goldbrand and let me tell you it sure packs a wallop! I'm currently playing the mod The Lost Spires (which is very well done, I must add) and the baddies are extremely tough (not for any player under a level 20). But Goldbrand levels the playing field for me; especially when I'm attacked by a group of the nasties.

Umbra suits me just fine....but then again, you're talking to someone who still uses silver arrows just because the quiver "looks" better with his overall look, and one who uses a self enchanted black bow over more powerful bows, for the same reason. Then again, I seem to kill my enemies just fine....

I loved Goldbrand and kept it until I got my Sword of the Crusader. I also use my bows since my marksmanship is up there. Nothing more deadly than an enchanted & poisoned arrow coming from an enchanted bow!!

I think Warhammers are more powerful than Claymores.

I was under the impression that BLUNT is more powerful, while BLADE has more speed.
Altmer are highly flammable.

Warhammers are stonger than Claymores, but they are quite a bit slower. Warhammers are the slowest but stongest weapons in the game.

I'm talking about a sword that you can just find or one that's given to you at the end of a quest...

Goldbrand. At 100 Blade with 100 Strength the base damage is about 30 along with the 22 point Fire Damage enchantment. It's recieved by completing Boethia's quest at lvl 20 so a lot of work is needed, but it definitely pays off.

That's why Umbra kicks butt....similar damage potential, but available at level 1 (with proper planning....or a willingness to dial down the difficulty setting...) ;) It's like a weapon that grows with you....

Again, right tool for the job.

How do you really want to do this?

Just run in, kill someone, then fight the whole town? Not a good idea, as there are alot of Essential Characters in towns. Getting ganged up by a bunch of Essentials, is a loose-loose situation. You did say murder, not kill. You also mentioned Non-essential (that can be killed) only, so you do understand this. So I figure you will be making planned murders, to not get caught. Although, you also did say rampage...?

Killing someone in thier sleep, with an enchanted weapon & poison... doesn't really matter what weapon you use. You would proabably want the most damage in one shot though. That would be Goldbrand. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Artifacts#Goldbrand Max base damage of 25, plus 22 fire damage. That is with a 100 Strength & 100 Blade. However, you can't get it until level 20, so that would probably be a non issue. Repairing it to 125% will give you an addition 3-4 points (sorry, I don't remember exactly). Still, Goldbrand at 47 max base damage, v.s. Umbra at 28 max base damage...?!? :?

Sniping from the shadows... Hatreds Soul http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Level ... treds_Soul

It is leveled, so wait until level 19. 24 Max Base Damage, plus 35 fire damage, aaaaaannnd Drain Speed 30 for 45 seconds. The bonus there is that it will drain thier speed, and they can not close for Melee (before you finish them off). Again, you can repair 125%, for a few more damage points. Then add in the damage of the arrows, plus thier enchantments.

None of the Melee weapons can touch it for Max base damage at 59 damage, not counting the arrows that you are using.

I would recommend Goldbrand and Hatreds Soul, as it gives you more versatility for what you are wanting to do. It could get boring only killing in thier sleep, or only sniping.

- - - - -

1.) A Daedric Longsword at 24 Max Base, with a Trancendant Sigil Stone with fire/frost/shock damage 25 points will give you 49 Max Base Damage.

2.) Using a Grand Soul Gem at an Enchanting Altar will allow you to add a Multiple enchantments, like fire damage, and Soul Trap... or Fire Damage, Weakness to fire, Soul Trap. It is less damage and less use/charges, but can be useful, depending on what you want to do.

- - - - -

It is true that Warhammers have a few more points of damage v.s. a Claymore, and both do more damage than a Long Sword. However, you also have to factor in the speed. Blow for Blow, the Long Sword will kill an opponent "quicker" than a Claymore or Warhammer. Also, as mentioned, 2-handed weapons do not get the Sneak Attack Bonus.

Goldbrand Sneak attack = 172 damage (25*6+22)
Umbra Sneak attack = 168 damage (28*6)

Hardly much of a difference (4 damage), and vs. a creature with fire resist, etc., like a Dunmer, you'd actually do LESS with Goldbrand... ;)

Good point.

Know your enemy, and pick the right tool for the job, as there is really no one weapon that is best for every occasion.

Well, I'll agree that a Hatred's Soul bow and matching arrows, plus some nasty custom poison...would easily trump pretty much everything else in the game...especially if delivered via a sneak attack.... Of course though, those arrows and poisons, would be limited in quantity.

Right Tool for the Right Job. I'd agree with that, though I'm more of a Right Poison/Enchantment for the Right Foe kind of guy, hehe... :Twisted Evil:

My choice is the perfect madness longsword you get made from a matrix. has 30 damage at 125% and a 20 health damage enchantment. Plus with 75 charges you can use a lot of quick slashes and let the enchantment damages pile up.

Dunmer's fire resistance is 75%. You'll get 5 points of Fire Damage from Goldbrand, and that will exceed Umbra by 1 point.

There's a Fire-immune in the game, but if you're having trouble taking down a relatively low-level Fire Atronach with Goldbrand's edge, then I suspect Umbra's scant few extra points of physical damage isn't going to turn the balance.
Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.

Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.
