What was the first mod you ever made?

Post by skooma steve »

Admittedly, the first mod I ever made was amateurish at best. It's hard to recall, but I believe it involved a ring enchanted with some insanely overpowered area of effect spells, or some such. As any one of our resident modders knows, it takes a great deal of time messing around inside the Construction Set before one becomes intimately familiar with Morrowind and all its idiosyncrasies.

The first mod I ever made that I was actually proud of ended up being a small town called Mistyvale. It began as a house mod, as I wanted to create a wizard's tower for my Telvanni mage that would serve as a larger and more accessible alternative to Tel Uvirith. I made an island off the southeast coast, and started populating it with trees and giant parasols. My tower was placed at the top of a hill, built into the rocks above cascading waterfalls, and it was only accessible by levitation.

Then I started to add small shacks in the valley below. What began as a modest stronghold quickly turned into an entire town. I went a little nuts with the whole thing - there was a tavern, a weapons shop, an enchanter, and boat docks with travel options. Eventually I added a couple regional quests. I even changed the local dialogue so that the NPCs would address me as "Lord of Mistyvale".

Of course, I was crafting all this on my old Gateway 2000 desktop computer, which is about as antediluvian now as a Dwemer ruin. Though the mods I made ten years ago are now nothing but lost history, I sometimes wish I could somehow track down that machine and salvage the old esp files just for kicks.

Anyways, I was just wondering if anyone else had any similarly nostalgia-fueled stories about their first mods.

Mine was an overpowered weapon of some kind, can't remember what... I've never really gotten that big into modding though, I tried making a shack once, didn't really work...

The whole "let's make something super overpowered" ethos seems to be common among first-time modders. 8)

I had a lot of fun modding once I got the hang of it. But I never got very good at scripting. Also, I have to admit that I did do a lot of copy+pasting of cells that already existed within the game. Placing each piece individually can take a REALLY long time.

The first mod I ever created was 'refurbishing' the Telvanni tower. I made the rather boring interior into a tower fit for my Dunmer Wizard-Lord(probably my strongest and favourite character I ever created)... it actually turned out great.

- a Library with enough room for every book in the game(I collected them in my travels).
- an Alchemy lab with pots for every single ingredient in the game.
- an Amroury with mannequins to display each weapon and armour set in the game.
- a hidden Daedric Shrine in the Dungeon with lava pools and statues.
- an actual bedroom that didn't look like it belonged to a commoner... had two floors.
- a room dedicated to the collection of expensive and rare goods like Limeware and Dwemer,
- a room for my pet wolves to roam around, while also serving as a bar to put my Daedric Brandy on display.

The place was tweaked to my style, even the lights were changed to give it that cosy yet sinister feel. I was extremely proud of that mod, but I lost it somewhere down the line which is a shame... took me ages to complete.

I figure that this thread perhaps should have been in TES General and not in Mod-Morrowind, even though Morrowind was the first modable game, it does not mean that everybody modded it... if you get what I am saying.
I never modded it e.g. but I did try to become a modder of Oblivion, but I never published my fantastic super awesome first mod, that everybody should try. It was like ZeRoc also an overpowered item, except it was not an item and it wasn't an item.
I made a large sheep and placed it inside of the Wawnet Inn in Weye.

First Mod I made, was adding a little marketplace to an empty-ish area of Balmora.

Then a year or so ago, I decided to get back into modding, but had to re-learn everything, so I searched for tutorials, and would you know it, theres a tutorial to make a marketplace in Balmora... I Lol'd.

@Dean: That's what I'm talking about! I can't get enough of awesome Wizard-Lord sanctuaries. *dons Telvanni robe* That sounds pretty similar to the tower I made as well. I love the idea of having a daedric basement.

@Savage Hippie: The reason I put this in MOD-Morrowind is because I was asking specifically about mods people have made for Morrowind in particular. I suppose it could have gone in the regular Morrowind board...meh.

@Believe: I always thought Balmora felt far too empty as well. It might be cool to make a sort of bazaar in the alleyways. :D

I put it at the northern end, on the East bank of the river.

There's like a big empty plaza there, it's the perfect place.

I've been playing with Vurt's Trees to spice things up in the flora department. So I went to Balmora and checked out that plaza you're talking about. Whaddaya know. Now there's a tree in the middle of it.

I made some Baby Kagoutis, as a first effort to make various babies for creatures. But I wasn't able to make them scary, as avoiding my character and fleeing, they just kept on being as aggressive as their elders... so I gave up. The project is still pending. 8)

I've only fired up the Construction Set once, just to see what it was all about, so I've only ever made one mod. I made a lunatic NPC who wanders around Balmora and talks nonsense, but if you follow the dialogue, you get a line about dropping a golden ring into the river from a bridge. I did put the ring there, but it wasn't anything special, just an unenchanted exquisite ring, I think. It was fun. ;)

I really want to get into modding, but I can aready see it would be insanely time-consuming and I can't afford to get this distracted right now. :(

It is. Insanely time consuming. But also very rewarding. Perhaps you should take your own advice (signature)? 8)

Hah, I'd like to, but in one day there are only 24 hours that can be wasted, and I'm already approaching that limit. ;)

But if I ever have time for that, I'm going to try and get involved in something like Living Cities or LGNPC. I don't think Morrowind really needs all that much "re-furnishing", but I'd love to see people acting in a more realistic way and more varied interactions with NPCs.

My first mod was failing at the concept of click and drag to fill an NPC's inventory, so I spent an hour with a nude Eric Snowmane trying to determine why he was nude... Major fail... lol

Hmmm...

I might be more prone to lol'ing at your major fail if I could actually understand what it is you're even talking about.
