When did I ever say I disliked the US? I've never visited it and a number of my friends on here are from the US so I have no reason to hate it.

I just mean the whole negative turn this topic has taken. Why can't we be like we were in WW2? All united and whatnot.

Re: True American/Anything
Rhyme I was trying to be facetious in the first quote. WWI was one of history's most miserable conflicts. It was also one where there was no other way to kill the enemy. Tactics had not caught up with the technology. The soldiers were doing what they were trained to do and that was kill the opposing soldier, but the only was to do so was charge through No Man's Land. Tanks and airplanes were still infants when the Battle of the Somme took place. Please do not confuse the tactics of the day with the morality of slaughtering innocent civilians.
Veck, there is nothing hard to believe about that, just there was so much more to it than that. And that argument was logical. Mass-murdering millions requires a lot more than just simply being told to do it.
.....
All I was trying, originally, was that I was tired of all the "America didn't do all that much during WWII" nonsense. I was not trying to start an argument here.

Re: True American/Anything
"True" American, or True Anything, is an excuse to guilt someone into acting a way you want them too. Whether they're not a true American if they don't support the war in Iraq, not a true Christian if they don't go to church every Sunday, or not a true Scotsman for using the true Scotsman analogy, it's just a way of forcing societal norms upon people.

Re: True American/Anything
Aye, Europe was surviving in 1940-1 but barely. Roosevelt signed the Lend-Lease as a way to bypass the Neutrality Acts. We supplied loads of supplies to Britain. As well as the Soviet Union, France, and China. But Britain definitely took the pie in the amount of supplies we sent them.
In the end I think Britain would of prevailed but you gotta admit 30 Billion dollars in supplies gives you some cushion.

Re: True American/Anything
@Hat that wasn't the point of my analogy. The terms I used in my analogy matter little about the intended meaning, so long as it's a valid one.

The allies weren't all that united and it took a sneak attack by the Japanese to stir the sleeping giant in to action up until then the US was willing to profit from the war. Admitedly when they acted the citizen soilders of the USA prodded some serious buttock.Ysmir wrote:I just mean the whole negative turn this topic has taken. Why can't we be like we were in WW2? A side note in history? Ehhh no. That is like saying the Roman Empire is a side note in the fact that they had no real importance.[/quote]
The Roman Empire lasted a long time as we think of it, it is entirely meaningless if you consider how long the world has been around (please feel free to ignore this is you are a creationist).

Not to mention the fact everyone seems content to ignore is that Russia was also a giant part of the Allied Force - and directly afterwards, the U.S and USSR were locked in a bitter cold war.Stormborn wrote:The allies weren't all that united and it took a sneak attack by the Japanese to stir the sleeping giant in to action up until then the US was willing to profit from the war.Ysmir wrote:I just mean the whole negative turn this topic has taken. Re: True American/Anything
The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent events in Syria and have therefore raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.
The Scots have raised their threat level from "[&@%!] Off" to "Let's get the [&@%!]." They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.
The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France 's white flag factory, effectively paralysing the country's military capability.
Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."
The Germans have increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbour" and "Lose."
Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.
The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.
Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be alright, Mate." Two more escalation levels remain: "Crikey! I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!" and "The barbie is cancelled." So far no situation has ever warranted use of the last final escalation level.

Meanwhile in the US, a child was caught carrying a Pez despencer into airport security. The US have changed their stance from "HOLY MOTHER OF FREAKING JESUS SHUT DOWN EVERYTHING THAT EXISTS" Which is their second stance, to "PRESS THE RED BUTTON AND GAS EVERYONE IN THE COUNTRY UNDER SUSPECTED TERRORISM" Which is their third.
The first stance of the US is "wut"

Or a child carrying/nomming on a Kinder Surprise walks into an American airport, causing every civilian in the airport to pull guns from their carry-on luggage, suitcases, jackets, and holsters to defend themselves from the WMD.
You guys are missing out on so much without Kinder Surprises. What was your childhood like? D:
